Success strategies for blended learning design
In developing and delivering these blended learning programs, NFSTC has found some key strategies for success and built them into other successful programs.
1. All components should drive to the desired learning outcome
To be an effective blended learning program, both online and classroom deliveries must complement each other and carry the same weight. Throwing electronic documents online as supplemental information to classroom delivery does not meet the spirit of truly blended learning. That said, blended learning does not have a widely accepted definition (Picciano & Dziuban, 2007)
Each instructional component, whether delivered online or in the classroom should contribute directly to a specific learning outcome. Learners are quick to recognize when an activity has value and are likely to skim or even skip through components that do not offer a return on the time invested in completing the activity.
Not every activity will work, and it’s important

In our experience, this was ineffective because online learners appreciate the ability to do the work as they have time and not be tied to a particular schedule. In addition, it created more costs on the delivery side while having minimal interaction with the learners. Now online learners post their questions and our experts answer in a timely manner, but immediacy is not expected. This does not appear to affect learner’s progress adversely. Technical support is generally answered as soon as possible because it can affect the learner’s access to the course.
From this we learned to prioritize topics and materials as a key strategy for success. While NFSTC continues to incorporate discussion boards within our blended and online learning programs, we now strive to create valuable training topics for the
My previous high school, Menomonie High School, does not have nearly as much technology available for the students to use as Crestwood High School does. In March of this year, I moved from Menomonie, WI to Elma, IA, I currently attend Crestwood High School in Cresco, IA. Menomonie High School has computer labs and computer carts the teachers are able to check out, but they have to reserve them months ahead of time because otherwise their students would not be able to have access to the computers. As a student, I noticed the transition from Menomonie High School to Crestwood High School has been very successful, I enjoy learning now and my grade point average has increased. Students like myself enjoy their education more due to having more access
Schwartz (2013) discusses how blended learning can be a mix of online and in-person instruction or hybrid class. Blended learning is a combination of the physical and digital tools, which integrate face-to-face pedagogical methods with a mixture of in class instruction, online work, and peer collaboration all intertwined with choices, creativity, and differentiated instruction that keeps student’s engaged as they learn. Blackboard, Ramport, and Banner allows faculty and staff members’ access to university data that is need to track the student’s VA benefits.
One of the most important principles that should be taken into consideration before switching to blended learning is the effect of tech usage on general human communication
This session focuses on the critical importance of ongoing professional learning for a successful blended learning transition. Participants will examine the core competencies of blended teaching as they think about the professional learning content that needs to be addressed. Participants will also discuss the core principles of effective professional learning, as they explore and plan models aligned to these principles with approaches that are ongoing, job-embedded, personalized, collaborative and connected to content. An important focus of this session is the key role of the principal in leading
The key components of disruptive blended learning model is giving students some control over the time, place, path and the pace of their learning. The students’ ability to learn according to their style will help accelerate their learning potential. Instead of teaching to the middle, the students have their own personalize education that helps reach for their potential and still meet the standard of the state’s education. Another key components of disruptive blended learning model are that part of learning happens in supervising, brick-and-mortar location. The technology does not replace the teacher, the teachers are there to help mentor and guide the students on their correct path. By having students been at the location, the teachers can
After reviewing several of the provided elementary level online courses there were likes, dislikes, strengths, weaknesses, and parts that would likely be emulated. The first website that was reviewed was Blended Schools. This website had many positive points and strengths. These strengths, included: having pre-assessments before beginning lessons, checking for understanding after parts of the lessons, and it was very easy to navigate. It is very important to have a pre-assessment before the lessons, this gives the students a starting point and a way to evaluate what they might already know. Another key point in the Blended Schools lessons were the check for understandings. This enabled students to review what they learned, and it assessed them on whether or not they were successful up until that point. Blended Schools was also very easy to navigate, this is a crucial point for parents and students, some parents may not have a lot of technology experience and this will
During my online studies, I expect to engage as a high performing student. I will not take the curriculum for granted and read the forums on a daily basis. Realistically, I do not expect to be able to read and respond to all of the responses to the forms but I will make every effort to read a majority of the replies. My takeaway from the article is that the online learner has to remain focused and diligent to the online learning experience. Similar to the typical classroom environment, there is a value to others viewpoints during a classroom discussion. Online classes are great forms of communication. The online learning environment gives access to students in remote areas who would otherwise lack or have limited exposure to higher education. Also, the facilitators feedback to the forum questions could prove to be beneficial in obtaining a scholastic
Contrary to what some may believe, online learning doesn't equate to less work nor are the standards any lower than what one would expect from a traditional classroom environment. Online learning simply refers to the way in which the content
I was super excited when FS-ISAC started offering education classes for members. I signed up almost immediately for the inaugural Critical Thinking class last month. The collaboration of the members to bring this to the masses was admirable and one of the aspects of the FS-ISAC community that I love. The class was amazingly useful and sparked another interest in the company – to be more than just a member – to be a part of the machine that makes it all possible.
There are others, like myself, who feel that online learning is better. The supporters of this back their claim by stating that online classes can be more beneficial for teachers and students. For example, fewer distractions in a classroom like other students disrupting class. Students can come into class late after the teacher has already started class and cause a disruption or talk during the class. With online classes the student can control their environment. Also, a teacher can provide in writing just the basic information a student needs for an assignment. This way there is less of a chance for the student to get confused on the assignment when the topic
The video that I watched was about Blended Learning and what works better in your classroom. there are different strategies may will work in some classes but not work of another classes. the purpose of all these strategies are helping students to be successful. The video define of Blended Learning is the combination of digital content and activity with face to face. Teachers should decide what is appropriate for their students. in addition, the video shows that students engage well with using technology in class but there are some thing students can not find it online for example, classroom time direct, instruction, investigations, and discovery, so students are need to meet their teachers and friends to achieve these. There are alot of face
In order for students to be able to take college courses online, they need some type of way to organize themselves and push themselves finish their work since their teachers really can’t (Bird). In a physical classroom, teachers are able to move around and be able to answers questions right then and there, but with online schooling students would have to wait a while to get a response from their teachers if they have questions (“Key”). The dropout rate for online schooling in very high, mostly because students don’t know how to prioritize their school schedule and don’t know how to be self motivated (Bejarano). Learning independently is very challenging, and students may become discouraged when they have to face challenges with learning online by themselves (Bejarano). Online learning would not be a good option for students that can’t self motivate and can’t focus
Students are required to learn massive amounts of course material. It is mandatory to learn at the instructor’s pace. Online courses give flexibility while scheduling to learn this material. Students are overwhelmed with homework throughout the duration of each class. Some have up to four classes of homework due weekly. It can be difficult for many to absorb all the material while scheduling work and home life. Trying to arrange the balance of each can be tiring for the body and mind. When taking online classes, there is an advantage to have the capability to learn the subject when the brain and body are ready to handle it. This flexibility can give the benefit of the full focus on schoolwork. On-campus classes give the benefit of help on the spot when needed, but students that take a
In today’s society we can choose to take online classes or the traditional way in a classroom the two differ in many ways, but the concept of the two are the same the goal is for the student to learn and apply the information given. Each setting has its pros and its cons. Having more than one choice in how to learn is beneficial to each individual because everyone learns in different ways. Some people learn better by themselves without any distractions and others learn better in a group setting. Each person knows which setting is a better fit for them, and which setting would help them be more successful in their classes.
Time for a face to face class is very difficult if a person works 40 hours a week but an online course can put an ease on the time restriction because the person does the work at their own pace and time. It is also easier to sign up for an online class than a class at a college. Message boards are in use if the students need to leave a question or a comment about the subject their on. They also save time by not traveling to the college and trying to find a parking space.
