Definition Driving can be a daunting task. Driving instructors often tell their student drivers to always look over their shoulders when they want to change lanes. There are areas that drivers are not able to see through the rearview and sideview mirrors and because of this, relying on them alone can lead to a deadly collision. Like these areas that drivers cannot see, there are hidden assumptions that we all have that influences our actions and behaviors and they have the potential to cause disastrous results; these are called blind spots. With being unaware of our own hidden assumptions, we are bound to unintentionally act and behave in a discriminatory matter towards particular groups of people, even in the most subtle of ways. Explanation
So, I look in the mirror and saw a large convertible with the top down over taking me at maybe 600 miles per hour I would have tried to get out of his path, but there was no way to know what his path was, since he was weaving back and forth across five lanes (out of three possible) Fortunately, he missed me he went past”. (Barry pg.572) He states that the driver was distracted. “I got a clear view of why he was driving so erratically: He was watching a music video. He was watching it on a video screen that had been installed where the sun visor usually goes, RIGHT IN FRONT OF HIS FACE, blocking his view of the road” (Barry pg. 572) Barry explains this experience while making it clear to his readers that he doesn’t mean to sound like an “old fud” But he “distinctively recalled learning in driver’s education class that, to operate a car, you need to be able to see where the car is going in case the need arises (you never know!) to steer”. (Barry pg.
Reading the “California DMV Handbook” has led me to come to realize that driving would not just be breaking the chains of limited transportation and gaining independence, but also being mindful of other people on the road. To be a responsible driver, you have to learn the laws and regulations and watch for people and signs. I would have to be mindful of other cars on the road as well as pedestrians. In conclusion, this book is a book that has changed my life and impacted the way society is shaped in California. The “California DMV Handbook” not only provides people with information on how to drive, but also shows how a simple book can hold the key to unlocking new horizons and breaking
It was important for this artifact to target mostly young adults because they are new drivers who think the world is theirs now, but it was also important because there is a popular commonplace amongst teens where they think they’re invincible and that nothing bad could ever happen to them. This video, as heart wrenching and tear-jerking as it is, proves a point. No one is exempt from being hurt, or even killed, when it comes to distracted driving, and the four areas of Stasis Theory that I discussed persuaded me, and hopefully other audience members as well, that it can
One of the many types of drivers are the oblivious drivers. These drivers are the type who don't seem to realize they have company on the road and are being selfish with their actions behind the wheel. Oblivious drivers can be inattentive to just about anything and don't try to manage their concentration of their surroundings. Most of the time, oblivious drivers are not aware of other cars around them so they do things such as cutting people off, not turning their high-beams down, or even causing accidents. Oblivious drivers can also be unaware of the conditions they are driving in, whether it's weather, construction areas, or accident sites. To be an oblivious driver, you don't have to be a specific age or have an exact amount of experience; any one can be an oblivious driver. Oblivious drivers can be very dangerous and cause many accidents on the road ways.
The distractions of driving are a popular area of research. Recent studies have looked at what distracts drivers and what other failures of awareness may contribute to traffic accidents. The goal of this paper is to look at research and explain how change blindness can possibly effect driving.
Being the cause of a cell phone related accident can leave a person unable to handle the consequences of their actions. There is great concern regarding the dangers of distracted driving. This is made evident by legislation that has been put in place in the United States. According to the U.S. Department of Transportation (2011), nationwide, 34 states, the District of Columbia, and Guam have enacted texting bans. Current data from the National Safety Council (2010) suggest that each year, at least 1.6 million traffic accidents (28% of all crashes) in the United States are caused by drivers talking on cell phones or texting. The U.S. Department of Transportation (2011) states that nine states, the District of Columbia, and
There are three types of drivers in this world: competent, overcautious, and reckless. After driving for many years in frustrating rush hour traffic, one might find there are three types of drivers, competent drivers who keep the flow going, over cautious drivers who cause slow and backed up traffic, and reckless drivers who weave in and out of traffic causing one near death experience after another. Trying to sort out what type of driver a person might be is an extremely challenging task. In a person's own mind, they think they are the aggressive type of driver, or the cautious type, but no one will ever admit that they are reckless kind. In most cases they’re too oblivious to these classifications and all other
In post-industrial societies such as the United States and much of Europe, autonomous vehicles are increasingly becoming a reality. It is nearly impossible to stop progress and this is no exception. Even when California banned self-driving cars, companies like Google and Uber just moved their testing sites to other states and continued their research (McFarland, 2017). America is known as a country of cars and trucks but the advances in self-driving cars may affect this image immensely as new companies take the forefront of this new industry. As this new technology becomes ingrained in daily life, society will be changed largely in the way that human drivers deal with autonomous cars, the common understanding of safety on the roads, and the
In today’s society automobile accidents are an everyday occurrence. Mishaps can happen anywhere at any given time. In the past ten years accidents have averaged around ten million occurring for each year (US Census Bureau). That is 100 million automobile accidents in ten years. Most people would automatically point their fingers at young drivers in today’s world. A number of accidents are caused by teens though I believe a worse threat is starting to appear. This threat being elderly drivers over the age of 70. These elderly drivers could be considered dangerous due to their decline in sensory. With more elderly drivers increasing over the years, drivers everywhere could be in danger. Within the next 20 years the
Of our five senses, we primarily rely on the sense of sight for our driving. While all drivers have this sense, some "see" the road and traffic situation far better than others. Why do some drivers possess a superior road awareness while others don't? Because they are using several if not all of these tips:
In this edition of The Driver’s Daily, I interviewed three drivers; one who has been driving for less than two years, one who has been driving between five to ten years, and one that has been driving for more than ten years. I asked them the following questions: a) Have you felt like you have developed any bad driving habits? b) Have you made any attempt to break any bad habits? and c) What advice do you have for new drivers.
I feel this author has been very effective at getting his point across. It is comical, descriptive and truthful. The exaduration in his stories helped to make me visualize his issue with this widely concerning problem. How do we stop the stupidness while driving?
Driving to the DMV felt like it was brand new to me I thought I was ready but every little situation while driving just add more stress onto to me. When we got to the DMV I felt as if anything would hit me I would just burst into tears, I have have never been this stressed out every, it was a brand new experience for me and it was not fun. So my dad and I walked into the DMV and the instructor was old, big man who just told us he justed failed someone. I started to tear up I couldn’t hold back. I have never been so embarrassed and nervous for something every. My significant biggest accomplishment so far in my 16 years of life would be getting my driver's license. A driver's license, something where I wasn’t forced to do or was expected. Getting my driver’s license was a dream of mind every since middle school. I felt when I have achieved my license I would become more independent, cooler, or even more confident.
Today a lot of people have bad driving habits. There is no need to go far to detect individuals driving with poor driving skills and dangerous techniques. Too many men and women have bad driving habits, and they can be seen almost anywhere, especially on highways. There are lot a different dangerous habits that affect people every day’s lives in different ways.
As Americans we love our cars, trucks, SUVs, and motorbikes for many different reasons. One major reason is that they are an easy and convenient mobility; a personal mode of transportation. It is rather hard to imagine what this county would be like without all the roads and vehicles on them. This is abundantly evident in Arizona, where the majority of us drive to most all of our activities from going to work or taking the kids for an ice cream. We jump into our vehicle and go. However, a curious thing often happens when we get in our car, truck and SUVs. We sometimes change turning into someone different when behind the wheel of our vehicle. We can become inconsiderate and aggressive to other drivers; at times even becoming rude, crude,
