The album Blonde was released on August 20 of 2016 and was debuted as being number one on the US Billboard 200. The record label of this album is called “Boys Don’t Cry” and the producers include Frank Ocean himself (Executive Producer), Buddy Ross, Francis Starlite, Pharrell Williams and many more. Similarly to his previous albums, Blonde is a mixture of R&B, psychedelic pop and soul all within an album. The lyrical melodies, abstract tunes, and gospel elements are some of the fundamentals that make up this album’s genres. While Blonde included the drums, backing vocals, and violins, the piano and guitar seem to dominate the whole album. Blonde was released four years after his latest album called Channel Orange. In this album, we can see …show more content…
He begins the track by mentioning acquisitiveness and materialism while singing about the girls who wish to have “Nikes” and “needs a ring like Carmelo,” so they are desperately “looking for a check.” The lyric “All you want is Nikes” also refers to the materialistic mentality of young kids today who use high-end brands as a status symbol and fashion trends. Ocean also touched upon a boy named Trayvon Martin singing “R.I.P. Trayvon that n*gga look just like me.” Trayvon was a teen that was fatally shot while reaching for a bag of Skittles in his pocket. This part addresses the racial injustices that still exist and is occurring on a daily basis. Another song called “Solo” is another favorite song of mine. “Solo” is sung through the perspective of a solitary artist. In this chorus where he said “in hell, inhale, there are heaven” ties in with the theme of his drug usage. At times, Ocean considered drugs as a way to escape reality and the problems surrounding him. Furthermore, this song signifies the beauty of being in solitary and encourages those to not find misery in being alone but use this opportunity to find yourself. The simplicity of the instrumentation and production, consisting of only has an organ and Ocean’s voice, truly depicts the overall theme of this song. Last of all, “Ivy” is a song about the reminiscence of your first love. Young love, a love where there were no worries or limits. However, fleeting it was bound to happen during a certain time in your life. But just like the ivy plant, you will discover growth and maturity that wouldn’t be made possible if you did not encounter your first heartbreak. The production of each song gives the album a very unique and interesting feature. Certain songs seem to have altered voices while some maintained Ocean’s normal voice. Since each song varied in productions, this allows the audience to
Music has been used for centuries to inspire and influence others. No matter what genre, there is always an important message to take from a song. In the song “Angry Anymore”, composed by Ani DiFranco stylistic devices of imagery, repetition, and symbolism are used to convey difficult situations happen in life, but understanding and forgiveness are necessary for moving on. The song begins with the phrase, “Growing up it was just me and my mom against the world and all my sympathies were with her.”(1-2). This quote represents the difficult situation DiFranco faced as a young child. Growing up without a father, she relied on her mother for support and guidance. The two had an unbreakable bond due to their circumstances. As a result, she sympathises
This is most noticeable in the song “White Ferrari” where Ocean sings in a rhythm that sounds almost identical to the popular song “Here, There, and Everywhere” by The Beatles. The album starts off with “Nikes,” a slow, hypnotic song, featuring high pitched vocals from Ocean, and a very dreamy sound, somewhat creating a mood for the rest of the album. The next songs, “Ivy” and “Pink and White,” are polar opposites about love, where in “Ivy,” Ocean talks about how he failed to keep a relationship going on, and in “Pink and White” he sings about intimate love and good long-term relationships. The album also contains skits like “Be Yourself” where Frank’s mother leaves a phone call for him telling him not to consume alcohol, not to get in the car with someone who has consumed alcohol, or is impaired by smoking marijuana, and a skit called “Facebook Story,” about a man who lost his wife because he didn’t friend her on Facebook. Although short, this skit has a powerful message: social media can and will destroy long-built relationships with somebody you love.
Artists often use lyrics as a powerful instrument for storytelling, personal reflection, and giving out messages. The comparison between the song “Love Yourz” by J. Cole and “ First Person Shooter” by Drake provides an interesting contrast. Both songs have different themes and emotions, showing us the unique lyrics that these artists involve. While both "Love Yourz" and "First Person Shooter" demonstrates the poetic ability of the artists through their use of literary devices and sound of poetry, "Love Yourz" appears more poetically due to his use of metaphors, lyrics, and use of emotional debt that resonates with his listeners. In “ Love Yourz,” J. Cole delivers a reflective verse that urges listeners to appreciate the beauty of their own lives
Speaker Knockerz is one of the best artist I have ever heard. Speaker knockerz raps about his life and school. Speaker knockerz real name is Derek McAllister, and he lives in South Carolina. Derek became famous on youtube. Derek started making songs about his life, his first song was about his friend, which was a undercover cop. He needed to get revenge for his lost girlfriend which died because a guy killed her, and his friend got killed too. I like speaker knockerz because his song is relate to my life which is crazy and weird sometime but I would put it on if I am kind sad,but most of the time I would put it on if i have a rough time in school.
The style of the song is very crucial in how it comes across to the listener. It is a simple song with a mellow sound and a focus on the lyrics. The song consists of Everlast’s deep, dark voice and use of often graphic words. This song is consistent with the artist’s usual style and combines elements of hip-hop and blues. The sound of the acoustic guitar and the steady beat of the drum highlight the story being told instead of drowning it out, like many songs do. The edgy style of the song lends itself to the message being sent.
The track deals with the aftermath of a death of a friend and the pain that comes with it. With such a personal story like this, an intimate connection between the singer and audience is developed. The lines, “Wishing I was someone else/ Feeling sorry for myself/ And I remembered someone’s kid is dead” hit you with with reality and are possibly the most powerful on the whole record. Some of the tracks make you wonder if the twenty two year old singer songwriter is okay and for me it was “Killer”. The main theme of the song is about the lack of control people have over others and the loneliness felt when feelings are not reciprocated by those we love.
"Amnesia" By 5 Seconds of Summer I chose Amnesia because the song talks about losing someone you love and wanting to forget it ever happened so you don’t have to go through the pain. There is a lot of pain in this story but the one situation applies really well to this song. One of the Will Grayson’s, also known as o.w.g.(other Will Grayson), had this online relationship with a boy named Isaac; he went to meet him at a store named “Frenchy’s”. When he got there he realized that he was not real and Maura, his friend, was really Isaac. This crushed Will because “Isaac” was the only person he could talk to and told him everything.
Frank Ocean is a great song writer, one of his greatest works is a song called “Thinkin bout you” which is primarily based on love. Thinkin bout you thinks that love isn't something you can turn off and on and the more you love someone the more you think about them no matter how much you deny it. By saying “cause I been thinkin bout forever, Frank Ocean reveals his thoughts on the future with this girl he loves. Also by saying “I’ve been thinking ‘bout you” Frank Ocean is saying that he can't get this girl off his mind. When Frank explains “Do you think about me still? Do ya, do ya?” Frank Ocean worries if the girl has the same feelings he has for her. Frank Ocean ties a lot of literary elements with his music. For example, Frank Ocean uses
The melody is not upbeat, like most other hip-hop or rap songs, which makes the listener hear
Based off the lyrics, the song is all about how Beyonce truly feels deep down inside. The message behind
Have you ever felt the feeling of never being loved? $uicideboy$ talk about killing themselves in the song “Leave Your Things Behind II.” Their music represents the rap genre, which is both hype and depressing rap. Not being loved can can hurt someone, it can drive someone to kill themselves. As rapped about in their song, $uicideboy$, along with others, express their feelings and their problems in their genre of music.
The lyrics of a song often have no substance and a clear example would be any Britney Spears song. The lyrics of “All Falls Down” are very deep. They talk about the ideal situation in life; We should go to school, get a good job and make money to buy what we want. The lyrics then ask, what if this doesn’t happen? This is prevalent in the first verse. “She has no idea what she doing in college. That major that she majoring, it don’t make no money.” The song questions these everyday values because we focus so much on these things, we don’t realize there are more important things in life such as life itself. Even Kanye admits that he spent money at Jacob’s Jewellery store before he thought about a house. “I went to Jacob with
Remaining elusive and mysterious since his debut, Frank Ocean (born Christopher Francis Ocean) has captivated the music world, especially that of hip-hop and R&B, where he seems to be taking his lead from the late Prince, challenging black male stereotypes by refusing to gender himself, declare his sexuality, or place his music in any particular genre (New York Times). In fact, his subversion of traditional industry career tactics is multidimensional. He opted not to have his work considered for any awards in 2017. Despite the six Grammy nominations he received for his debut Channel Orange, or his history-making sneak-independent release of Blonde just days after his album-in-film Endless fulfilled his contract with Def Jam Recordings. He also
At this moment, Kendrick’s monologue addresses the battle encountered by African Americans today and the frustration that comes with wanting and deserving more than they have. The backing vocals in this section of the song imply that American society wants African Americans to submit to it and praise it, even though many of them have suffered from it. This introduction signifies how dazed society is to the black people and how there is a constant battle between
