The number of honor killings each year is unknown. Figures are only estimates at the very best. The Iraq government dismisses the numbers that are published and those outside the country have no way to identify how many honor killings take place, if they are even recorded somewhere. According the Human Rights Watch, honor crimes are “acts of violence, usually murder, committed by male family members against female family members who are perceived to have brought dishonor upon the family” (Stop Violence Against Women). Just sheer suspicion can be seen as a reason to commit an honor killing. This is because honor is a huge aspect of the culture in Iraq. Without it a family has little left. So if honor is needed to be restored then it must be …show more content…
According to Article 409 of the Iraq Penal Code; men, specifically only men, have the right to kill if “he [finds] his wife or one of his female dependents in a state of adultery.” This is the exact law that is used in cases of the honor killings. The men who committed the crime will then receive a maximum of three years in jail, if they are caught, for the honor killing (Bayoumy). Honor killings are not just socially accepted they are also ignored, as though they are not occurring, by the law. In the case of Du’a Khalil Aswad whose death, which was recorded on a cell phone camera, was posted on the media, in the video it can be seen that the police are just watching instead of helping (Four Years On). The police are citizens of Iraq and therefore they are taught the same values of the culture that people who participate in honor killings are taught. Because of that even the police view honor killings are acceptable and feel no need to step in to intervene. While women are trying to call question to this law, it is still in place because of the fact that honor is regarded as a high priority in Iraq and without honor killings there is no way to restore honor to a family name that has been dishonored.
While few girls are able to escape if they are to be killed in an honor killing, “Betrayed” by Latifa Ali, tells the true story of Latifa Ali as she is escaping from her father who would have her
These acts were not those of paternalism. Paternalism suggests a relationship between one who can do and one who cannot do. They were acts of kindness and economics. The old woman didn’t suffer in want because she was black, but because she was old. The man didn’t need money because he was black, but because he had a family to feed.
This book follows the true stories of Belva Gaertner and Beulah Annan, while reporter Maurine Watkins is tracking their stories. The girls are always referred to as beautiful and charismatic, essentially all that matters to the media. They find themselves in a sticky situation of getting caught possibly murdering a lover, and now face a lengthy trial and penalty that could cost them their life in jail or death.
As defined by the dictionary, honor is a high respect that is earned through deeds and reputation. But, what is honor, and how does one receive it? Honor is like many things that are hard to put into words. Along with that, honor can be totally different, depending on your perspective. In the play, A Few Good Men, there is a central theme based around honor, who is doing right and who is doing wrong.
Picture this, a mother crying for her baby and yelling at her husband for killing her little girl, just because she was in love with someone else, other than the man her father chose for her to marry. Sad right? You here about his all over the news from all over the world. Family killing family because they have dishonored the family. It’s so stupid to see family going against each other just because their son likes men or daughters refusing arranged marriages and it always ends up killing their sons or their daughters because they have “dishonored the family name”. This murder is called honor killing, killing those who have dishonored the family.
The Blood Drive is a satirical story addressing the dangers of laissez faire gun laws and treating children as having the same capacities as adults. When you give a child a gun you’re saying you recognize them as having the same capacity for reasoning as adults. When you remove the responsibility from adults you allow them to regress to childish behavior. Blood Drive shows that a society that lacks discipline and order is doomed to chaos and tragedy.
Girl from a young age are taken from their homes and sold throughout the middle east and used for their bodies. These terrible actions are why books like The Girl Who Escaped ISIS are so important, they bring to light what terrible actions occur in these situations, furthermore they raise more awareness for the tragedies that still go on today. In Farida's situation she was bought by many men in ISIS, all believing in their religion and that what they are doing is right. Before being raped in one situation, her captor began to pray, she said that, "the particularly religious ones commonly did this before taking a woman, thereby celebrating their rape as a form of worship." (Khalaf 148). What is happening to these girls is a horrible act, but these men are truly seeing that what they are doing is honoring their god. This isn't only seen in the book, real situations like this occur. The men believe that raping woman is a religious act. A 12 year old girl, being held a sex slave by ISIS, said, one man while raping her stated that "according to Islam he is allowed to rape an unbeliever. He said that by raping me, he is drawing closer to
General Patton was a devoted student of history, a poet, a humble man who was very unsure of his own abilities, a man who could bust into tears at any given moment, and could be charming or quite insulting all in the same hour. His reckless, outspoken manner gained him friends and enemies of equal determination. General Patton was not only extrovert of public perception but he also had an intensely private side. He was a man who trained himself for greatness with a determination matched by no other Allied General of World War Two. During the war, Patton led U.S. troops in Morocco, Tunisia, and Sicily, then took command of the Third Army, leading the troops through the German lines at Normandy to traverse France
Recently, I challenged myself to ski the lone double-black diamond at my local mountain. While this may seem enterprising in and of itself, it was a distinct challenge on this day owing to the fact that it was my first time back on skis in nearly three years. Up until then, depression had thwarted me from enjoying my preferred winter pastime. At the crest of the slope, I peered over the precipice and knew it would be strenuous, that my legs could give out, but I went for it anyway. My run happened to be a messy one and I did indeed fall, but how else would I get back into skiing shape and improve if I didn’t first try?
It’s hard to second guess the individual soldiers and their actions in the case of the two Afghans that attempted to elope. I’m sure they were just doing what was correct procedure for security threat at the time. Had they interpreted the Father’s intent or motivation for wishing to see his daughter they likely would’ve reached a different conclusion to the conflict. This scenario highlights the need to have interpreters that are well versed in local customs and culture, had any of the soldiers or interpreters been dialed into the fact that what the two young elopers were doing would be grounds for an honor killing they would likely choose a different COA. I’m also interested in the timeline that this case occurred, I know early on in the conflict US service members were not clued in on the honor killing to restore a family’s name and reputation but after a couple of high profile cases here in the States I would think that someone might have seen the danger in allowing the father to see his daughter. The soldiers were no doubt applying the golden rule in allowing the father to see his daughter. Being a father myself if my daughter ever ran away I would place a pretty high premium on seeing her and most authorities would allow that once she was detained, not thinking twice about what my motivations to see her are.
A four years college degree should not be a necessity; and certainly shouldn’t be made seem as a gate way to heaven because it is not. College is not for everyone and it shouldn’t have to be. Students are in more debt now than ever. It is about time we acknowledge that not every degree needs to be a 4years degree and if so, others who obtain degrees in a lesser time should be respected and held high just as a 4years degree graduate.
Women during this war were dragged off the street by reo-regime Shabiha thugs and they would send pieces of rape victims bodies to their families (Ghafour 2013). This is a clear attack on families’ sense of honor because female members of there family were not only taken but they would be reminded through dismembered bodies parts. According the Ghafour (2013), a rape survivor from the civil war was regarded has dead to her family because she was raped and was issued a death certificate event though she was still alive. Also if a women was forcibly impregnated the victim and family would be reminded by having the enemy’s
A woman by the name of Farkhunda was beaten to death for allegedly burning a Qu’ran. “They beat her over and over by kicking and throwing stones. The men then threw her body infront of a car, dragged her to the river bed, continued to throw stones, and ignited her body on fire” (Rubin 1). As these men were hurting Farkhunda, bystanders stood and watched without informing the police. These actions show what little respect the men have for women in that area. “Three days after her death, the ministry of Hajj ruled her innocent. She did not burn a Qu’ran.” Therefore the death of Farkhunda was uncalled for and did not need to happen. Unfortunately, because there were so many attackers the police were unable to blame people for her death and the case was dropped. However, if something like this were to happen in the U.S., the government would not allow for the case to end until people were to be imprisoned in most cases. Also, justice was never brought to Farkhunda’s family which is unfair because their daughter was massacred. This goes to show the actions taken in Afghanistan are cruel and oppressive against women compared to the rights women have in the United
But mostly Sunni Arab women go to school to study anything they wanted. The main person of Iraq’s nuclear program and scientist of weapons of mass destruction was a women. They were offered five years of maternity leave, equal pay, and enshrined law and enforcement. In reality that in not what happens, women who had different political opinion were sent to “rape farms”. I think this is wrong, women shouldn’t have suffer just to state an opinion. In the “rape farms” they were treated like dogs, many of the women had numerous children. After Iraq was emancipated, society did not accept the women in the “rape farms” because the traditional Arab society considers them as an embarrassment and shame. Society is wrong, they should have helped the women that need it. Hussein regime’s used women as bate to get information from their hostage thought raping the women. Women should not face the consequence for the actions. After the Iran-Iraq war and the first Gulf war, girls were not able to go to school
In everybody’s life there is something that makes him strive for success. That something can be money, women, fame, or many other incentives.. To the medieval knights, victory renown and glory are the ambitions they strive for. Breaking a law in this code would be considered a disgrace, and would bring a dishonor that was worse than death itself. However, by applying the Code of Chivalry, the knights in the medieval time displayed certain character traits which would secure success and honor in both battle and morality. In the book Ivanhoe, by Sir Walter Scott, a knight named Ivanhoe illustrates this by devoting his attention to keeping the rules of the Code of Chivalry, which consisted of love of adventure, integrity, and loyalty to the
The Australian Red Cross Blood Service (ARCBS) has identified a long-standing issue of poor repeat blood donation from young donors, in particular males. While this group of the population has a high number of new donors, it has been found they are also the least loyal, which poses a problem for both current and future blood stocks. As a marketing consultancy firm, we have been commissioned to analyse the issues surrounding blood donation in Australia, and to devise three cost-effective marketing strategies aimed at increasing repeat donation from this demographic.
