Some of the most successful people of all time have had to overcome a plethora of difficulties throughout their life to achieve their goals. A few examples of people who demonstrate this include Thomas Edison, Bo Jackson, and Ludwig van Beethoven. Thomas Edison came up from nearly nothing and was able to create over one thousand patents. Bo Jackson had a very tough childhood and a lot of injuries in his professional baseball and football careers. Ludwig van Beethoven was told that he would never be a great composer but managed to compose an astounding number of influential works, some while completely deaf. Without an enormous amount of determination, none of these people would have been able to achieve the success that they did. Determination is the most important character trait necessary to overcome obstacles because when people never give up and are fully determined, it is much harder to stop them from excelling at whatever they are attempting to do. …show more content…

When inventing, he often tried different solutions over and over until he found the best option. “He would literally try something thousands of times and if something did not work, he counted it as a success because at least he would know what did not work. After 8,000 trials while he was developing a storage battery, he remarked, "Well at least we know 8,000 things that don't work!"” (Edison). This constant determination drove him to invent some of the most prominent inventions of his time. He is a terrific example of someone who worked hard for everything that they earned. In fact, he often worked harder than he probably had to but never stopped. He was somewhat of a workaholic in that way and was proud of that.
