Symbolism is commonly used in many books, movies, etc. To put it simply, symbolism is when some sort of object or idea is used to symbolize feelings or emotions. For instance, bad weather can be used to symbolize a character’s feelings of sadness. In the novel “Tangerine”, symbolism is used many different times, but a prominent example in the novel is when Mr. Donnelly, a side character in the story, uses an imaginary porcelain plate to symbolize a local record he broke. Symbolism is usually used to represent things that are meaningful without actually saying so, you’ll sometimes have to read behind the lines. Symbolism can be used as an artistic or poetic way of writing to represent an idea. There is a lot of symbolism used in the novel “Kindred” by Octavia Butler, she uses symbolism through her character Dana’s constant physical and emotional pain, it’s a motif. The constant pain and abuse Dana goes through represents the fact that whenever Dana travels back in time and gets hurt weather emotionally or physically, she never comes back as she originally was, she brings back a reminder of the past with her.

     Symbolism is widely used to intellectually stimulate the reader or viewer. For example, flowers were symbolized in both versions. The flower he wears in his lapel looks to not belong there based on his personality and the clothes that he wears. Just as the flower should not belong there Paul feels that he does not belong in his life. However, sounds were also symbols in the movie. In the beginning of the movie, the viewer finds Paul waiting to meet with his professors, and a ticking clock heard over everything else. This illustrates the passing of time, or even that his time is going to be running to an end. At the firm, an adding machine, and this is telling the audience that money will be coming into play, and the train whistle at the end tells the viewer that he is thinking of his death or a way out. The director uses these to create a mood or as foreshadowing.

In the book "The First Part Last" he spray paints awall. This wall symbolizes all his positive memories from being a kid all the way to when Featherwas born. Then Johnson goes on to say, "Finally it's just me and that thing in the baby carrierwho doesn't have a face" (pg.60). In this chapter he wants to find the baby's face but he can't. Ina few chapters after that Angela says "I climb the stairs and think about holding her, or maybeI'm really thinking about just holding on to her"(pg.75). He realized Feather is the missing piece inhis life and he wants to keep it that way and not lose her. He needs to lose his old partying anddoing whatever he wants identity and get a new mature and father like identity in order to dothat.This has to do with Angela Johnson's discussion regarding coming of age because he has tochange so much to be mature it's like he's gaining a new identity and growing up.This is anotherreason I think Bobby has come of age.
