Body Paragraphs Many versions of the novel Briar Rose include the archetypal theme of the Ogre Stepmother, but in Jane Yolen’s version the Ogre Stepmother are two sisters. Becca, the main protagonist, was born into the Berlin family as the third child after two sisters Shana and Sylvia. The way the two older sisters treat her is shown by, “‘Shut up!’Shana and Sylvia said in unison” (Yolen 10), when Becca made a racket. This makes Becca seem like she has a more naïve trait to her personality, for she had never questioned about her grandmother’s past. This Becca seem less of the strong woman she is as she falls into short term denial because of her disbelief of her grandma’s past. Becca was strong enough to go look for her grandmother’s past, but doesn’t have the courage to accept the truth. In the fairy tale the king wishes for a daughter
