It seems as if everywhere these days, someone has a part of the body pierced. Body piercings, also known as body modifications, are showing up on celebrities, athletes, classmates, friends and coworkers. Whether it is located on their face, tongue, or ears, body piercing is becoming a popular way to stand out from the rest of the crowd. So, this form of self-expression should be planned out carefully.
Deciding where, on the body, to get the piercing is easy. Knowing if this would be the safest decision is the hard part. According to SoYouWanna.com (2007), if a navel piercing is desired, be aware that sweating and clothes rubbing on the pierced area will not help with the healing process. A tongue piercing is a wonderful conversational piece but talking too much brings the possibility of chipping a tooth. Eating is a challenge after getting a facial piercing. Any piercings near the mouth area could accidentally get swallowed, if the jewelry is not secured. Jewelry could get stuck in the teeth while chewing, which could cause a piercing to rip or break a tooth. Athletes should not get facial piercings because there is so much activity involved that a piercing might get snagged on something, or someone. A genital piercing is not a good idea at all. These areas are sensitive and very painful to get pierced. Genital areas are very prone to infections and may rip during certain activities. A professional piercer will give their recommendations on whether or not to do the piercing that is desired (So You Wanna Get an Unusual Body Piercing, par.3).
After getting pierced, there are steps that need to be taken, in order to promote proper healing and to avoid health risks associated with body piercing. A majority of these risks are from
Moderation is important when discussing tattooing and piercings. When tattooing, piercings, and body modifications began to alter the overall appearance of the individual, the individual would be considered deviant by majority of society. There are many individuals in the United States that have tattoos and piercings, but majority of the people have tattoos that can be concealed or tattoos and piercings that are not gaudy. An article titled, “Tattoos in the Workplace” discussed that in 2012 a poll was conducted that stated that 21% of adults in the United States had tattoos (Osland, 2013). However, nearly 60% of people that have tattoos, have them in areas that are hidden by clothes (Kesling, 2013). Although this study may not cover every single individual in the United States, it does give a
The body art is an ancient concept of human society. Tattoo and body piercing are the current and common trends of the body art in the American culture. In my opinion, there is nothing wrong to have these things on an individual’s body, if he or she is an art lover but if someone have this just because virtual world personalities have these then it is not relevant for him or her. As my classmates Juliet and Daniela have been mentioned about the harmful consequences of these things on human body in some ways.
The rising popularity of tattoos and body piercing is more than just the latest fashion craze. This type of body art has been a part of this world for thousands of years. Tattoos and piercings have served as amulets, status symbols, declarations of love, signs of religious beliefs, adornments and even forms of punishment (Smithsonian.com). In the later years (1940 – 2000) tattoos and piercings were more common among teenagers and young adults, but now, people of all ages are expressing themselves through body art. To try and understand this rise in the desire to permanently mark ones self, we must first determine the origin and history of tattoos and piercings.
This piercing is given upon the transition to adulthood for young women, and in some cases is never removed. These traditions remain strong in these cultures and can be seen in practice today. Pacific Island cultures also practice ritual body modification including both tattoos and piercings (Why Do People Get Body Piercings?).
According to Written on the Body by Jane Caplan, "Tattooing is one of many forms of irreversible forms of body alteration... and it is probably the oldest and most widespread [of these.]" Due to the age of tattooing as a whole, there are countless things one can learn

There are many reasons for individuals to acquire body modifications. One possible reason for body modifications is to gain attention through displays of extravagance such as those that are found in people with histrionic disorder (Durand & Barlow, 2000). A study by Burger & Finkel (2002) investigated reasons why people adorn their bodies with tattoos and body piercing. They also researched unmodified participants’ perceptions of body art. When the researchers polled participant group as to their perceptions of body modifications, they found that many people associate tattoos and body piercing with risky behaviors and view them as symbols of drug abuse and violence (Burger & Finkel, 2002). They found that a main motivation for people to modify their bodies is to increase self-esteem. The people polled found body art as beautiful and felt more beautiful when they acquired it. A study conducted at Denison University by Lyons and Snyder (1996) described the reasons why college men and women had tattoos and body piercing. The main reason cited by the men with body modifications for getting tattooed or pierced was to identify themselves with a certain group. Women, however, rated their tattoos and piercing to make themselves more individualized or sexually appealing. Other popular reasons for displaying body modifications are to carry on cultural traditions and to increase
Anyone who wants a tattoo has to have a high threshold for pain. Where the tattoo is located will generally tell a person how much discomfort will be involved. Some of the body parts that cause the most discomfort for men and women are: head, neck, back and front of the knee, hands, and the wrists just to name a few. Usually the parts of the body that has more fat or muscle build up will cause the least amount of pain. This would include the: stomach, buttocks, outer arm, and the calves. No matter where you get a tattoo it will hurt, but it’s not unbearable. A major advantage of body piercing is the pain is manageable and only lasts for the first day. For most people it is just a slight stinging feeling. It is said that piercing hurts less with a gun but it is advised to use a needle for safety reasons. The only other way a piercing could case pain would be if a person got an infection. There is a risk of infection but only if a person does not care for their
