Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief is about a 12 year old boy named Percy Jackson who's getting chased by mythological monsters and his two friends Annabeth Chase, daughter of Athena, and Grover Underwood a satyr who is Percy's protector. Percy was in 6th grade and had just gotten out of school for summer break, when he found out that he was a half-blood, his mother was Sally Jackson, a mortal and his father was Poseidon, king of the sea. Percy got sent to camp Half-Blood for protection from monsters and got assigned a mission to find a lightning bolt that the gods think he stole and prevent a war between the gods, Hades, Poseidon, and Zeus.
In the book Percy Jackson: The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan, Percy is your typical 12-year-old boy who is a troublemaker in school and lives with his mother’s abusive husband. Percy’s life changes when he accused of stealing Zeus’ master bolt and attacked by monsters. Percy’s mother is killed along the way towards a camp called Camp Half-Blood and trains his heritage as a demigod. Percy is then sent on a heroic quest, with friends, to prove his innocence and along the way, rescue his mother from Hades. After a long and arduous journey of being chased by monsters, Percy managed to return the lightning bolt and save his mother. Percy is then betrayed by a close friend, as the friend was the thief, and escaped while warning them of the true mastermind.
He has excellent instincts that help him in battle. As a demi-god, Percy is very brave. “A strange fire burned in my stomach. The weirdest thing was: it wasn't fear. It was anticipation. The desire for revenge. Hades had tried to kill me three times so far, with the Fury, the Minotaur, and the hellhound. It was his fault my mother had disappeared in a flash of light. Now he was trying to frame me and my dad for a theft we hadn't committed.” This is an important part in the story because it shows that he doesn't fear the God of the Underworld. This proves that Percy has grown tremendously throughout the story. Although he lacks his friend's intellect, Percy is extremely loyal and brave, which is constantly shown in the
that Greek gods exist, and have been closely observing western culture and ideas. The author draws parallels to Percy’s life, who is an American teenager, with that of Greek heroes. This parallel helps the readers to relate to the book, essentially engaging the young readers to learn about Greek mythology and the lessons of life that it teaches, in a not so bland way. The protagonist of the novel, Percy Jackson, is revealed to be special in some way. This section also develops other supporting characters, such as Chiron, Percy’s teacher, who also was mentor to Hercules and Grover, who is Percy’s sidekick, a multi-dimensional character with his own past, hopes and concerns. The association of Chiron and Percy foretells that Percy will carry on heroic deeds in future. Percy fights Minotaur, a monster that even Theseus fought and defeated. In the process of defeating Minotaur, Percy loses his mother, which he feels was his last hope to returning to his normal human life. By drawing parallels between Percy and various heroes of Greek Mythology, the author shows Percy in the light of a hero. A hero who is yet to prove his worth in the Camp Half-Blood. His encounter with Clarisse at a bathroom in camp, allows him to show his strength, which was very similar to that of his father Poseidon, but also instils in some ways fear amongst the camp
Percy wakes up at a place called camp half-blood. Camp half-blood is created by magical borders in order to protect demigods so they can continue to train while being safe. After entering camp half-blood Percy learns about his identity of being a demigod. A demigod is child from a human and Greek god parent. He learns that he’s the son of one the three major Gods, Poseidon. Also, that his mother is very much alive but is kidnapped by Hades one of the three major Gods as well. Percy then goes into training and utilizes his dragon to be a positive trait that helps him settle into his new life. As his dyslexia functions for mythology and his ADHD helps him keep moving in
In the beginning of the book. Percy believes that all he is, is a kid who loves his mother, has ADHD and dyslexia, and is not able to stay in the same boarding school for more than a year without being expelled. This is shown on page 10, where the narrator says, “..this was my sixth school in six years, and (I) was probably going to be kicked out again.” This quote shows that Percy does not have much confidence, and is expelled from school a lot. Also towards the beginning of the book, on page 44, Percy begins to recall multiple instances where “something creepy” had happened in a school, before he got expelled. Percy is beginning to understand that he is different, in a special way. In the middle of the book, Percy is introduced to new beliefs, a change in character, and he starts to develop a new attitude. He learns that he is a half-blood, which explains why he has ADHD and dyslexia, and also explains why he had to transfer schools so frequently. This is shown on page 93. Annabeth, Percy’s new half-blood friend, explains to Percy that most half-bloods move from school to school constantly, and are diagnosed with ADHD and dyslexia. Percy began to finally realize that he wasn’t just some strange kid, who had problems with reading and staying still. He was a half-blood, and there were tons of other kids just like him. He was more confident, brave, and more willing to take risks.
Percy first got interested in the field when he was a young boy. When Percy was a
“ ‘I’m supposed to go to the Underworld and confront the Lord of the Dead.’...’Find the most powerful weapon in the universe.’...’And get it back to Olympus before the summer solstice in ten days.’ “ The Lightning Thief is a book in which Percy Jackson, the hero, and his friends Annabeth and Grover, must undertake a quest to reclaim Zeus’s master bolt from Hades. “The Hero’s Journey” is a pattern of stages that many heroes experience. Throughout Percy’s quest, the archetype of “The Hero’s Journey” is followed. A few stages of “The Hero’s Journey” that Percy undergoes are The Ordinary World, The Supreme Ordeal, and Confronting the Father.
Most heroes are best known for their battles against monstrous beings. Percy is on his way to camp Half-Blood with his mother and best friend, Grover, when they are stopped in their tracks. Their car has mysteriously crashed into a ditch with no explanation, until a dark figure lumbers towards them. "Glancing back, I got my first clear look at the monster. He was seven feet tall, easy, his arms and legs like something from the cover of Muscle Man magazine—bulging biceps and triceps and a bunch of other 'ceps, all stuffed like baseballs under vein-webbed skin." (Riordan 50) Without any warning Percy meets an enormous monster that he has to battle. He has to
Percy's mother refuses to stay behind, so she goes with Grover and Percy in horrible stepdad Gabe's car. Percy cannot stop staring at Grover from the waist down... He explains to him he is half-goat, a satyr in Greek mythology. Grover tells Percy they're headed for the camp he was supposed to be attending for the summer; this is the only way Percy will be safe. When all of a sudden, they wreck into a ditch injuring Grover. They aren't very far from the property line of the camp, Percy's mother wants him to run there, but he refuses to leave his mom. Something catches Percy's eye; it's the Minotaur. His mother seems to know how to handle this, so she tells Grover and Percy to separate. With his mother telling them to keep running, the Minotaur clasps his hands around her neck and disintegrates to dust.
I've never read any of Rick Riordan books before, But when I read The Lightning Thief I actually liked it. I liked how you describe each event that was happening. And how you would tell us what the characters were doing, where they were at, and the character names that were in that event. One thing I really liked is how you went into specific details in your book. While I was reading your book it felt like I was watching a movie because it had some much detail. There were some parts that I didn't like, but other than those parts the book was good. I also didn't like one of the characters, The character that I didn't like was Gabe Percy step-dad. The reason I don't like Gabe is that he's rude to Percy, Gabe basically treats Percy as his slave.
