A Good Man is hard to find
A Good Man is Hard to Find is a story about a family who is going on vacation to Florida. Members of this family include a son and a daughter, June Star and John Wesley. These children are very disrespectful ungrateful children throughout the entire story. The parents just ignore them while the grandmother tries to correct them and teach them right from wrong. Sitting in the living room, deciding whether to go to Florida or go where the grandmother suggests, Tennessee the children start being disruptive. Grandma is terrified about the fact that there is a prisoner who escaped and is said to be heading towards Florida. As she is suggesting to the family to go elsewhere, John Wesley states to grandma, “If you don’t want to go to Florida, why dontcha just stay home.” Sister June Star comes back with a sassy remark, “She wouldn’t stay at home to be queen for a

They decided that they wanted to go on a detour to a place that grandma had told them about. Mom and dad said no they weren’t going. So June and John decided to act out. They both started yelling and being very disrespectful. John was kicking the back of his dad’s seat. He kicked it so hard, that dad could feel it in his kidneys. June leaned over her mother’s seat and decided to yell and scream in her ear. She stated that they never have any fun on their vacations and never get to do anything that they want to do. Dad had enough of this and stopped the car immediately. Right then I would have had a little chat with my children and let them know that their behavior was and is unacceptable. This is what should have been done instead of going ahead and taking them to the one place they wanted to go. This teaches them absolutely nothing except that they can act a do whatever they want and they still will get rewarded and do whatever it is that they want to
John Wesley, Bailey's son, asks the grandmother, "If you don't want to go to Florida, why dontcha stay at home?" (320). June Star replies that "She wouldn't stay home to be queen for a day," and goes on to say, "She wouldn't stay at home for a million bucks. Afraid she'd miss something. She has to go everywhere we go" (320). Even though these statements from the children to their grandmother are disrespectful, they do describe her character, as she "was the first one in the car..." the following morning (320).
In the short story A Good Man Is Hard to Find, written by Flannery O’Connor, the theme that the definition of a ‘good man’ is mysterious and flawed is apparent. The reader must realize that it is difficult to universalize the definition of a good man because every person goes through different experiences. Thus, these experiences affect his or her viewpoint and in turn flaw ones view on a good man. O’Connor conveys this theme through her excellent use of diction, imagery, foreshadowing, and symbolism as well as through a creative use of repetition and an omniscient point of view.
In addition to the grandmother being viewed as a traditional Southern lady, the grandmother also views good through her faith. In the article, “An Overview ‘A Good Man is Hard to Find’”. Author Elisabeth Piedmont-Marton states, “ an individual may not earn opportunities for grace by good works, but he or she may turn away from grace when it’s offered.” Basically, Piedmont-Marton is warning the audience that the Misfit had an opportunity of grace, when the grandmother touches his cheek, but turns the offer down, which to the grandmother is not how she views what a good man is to be. Another example from the same article, Elisabeth Piedmont- Marton writes, “ She also cautions the readers that they ‘Should be on the lookout for such things as
The way the grandmother sneaks the cat into the car and lies about the secret panel brings irony to her beliefs of what it is to be a lady. Her views on the “old south” is established when she calls an African American boy a “cute little pickaninny.” June Star’s remark upon the boy not having britches on leads on to the grandmother’s remark on how he might not be able to afford shows her lack of sympathy towards the less fortunate. This also makes the reader wonder why she even says such a thing in the first place. Instead of reaching out to lend a hand the grandmother ends her statement by simply saying that she would like to “paint a picture” of the scene.
“A Good Man Is Hard To Find” is a very compelling short story written by Flannery O’Connor. In this short story Flannery O’Connor tells a story of a man (Bailey) who plans on taking his family on a summer vacation in Florida, but the grandmother disagrees and insist that they go to Tennessee instead. She then tries to persuade Bailey to take the family to Tennessee by telling him that his two children had never been to Tennessee before and by showing him a news article, which showed that an escaped murderer called the Misfit was last seen headed to Florida. Bailey pays his mother no mind and takes his family to Florida anyway. Along the way the grandmother mistakenly kicks
The story “A Good Man is Hard to Find”, by Flannery O’Connor, is about nuclear family in the 50’s who decided to go to East Tennessee for vacation instead of Florida. The grandmother said that the way Tennessee opposes the Misfit, a criminal who escaped from jail, was one of the main reasons for her choice. On the way, the grandmother suggests going to an old mansion she once visited by deceiving the kids to force Bailey to seek out the place but the grandmother made a mistake with the location. Embarrassed, the grandmother jerks her feet and Pitty Sing, the cat, escapes the basket and surprises Bailey, who wrecks the car. Later, the family meets the Misfit and his partners and the Misfit kills them all after the
Brutality, humor, religion, and violence are a few themes portrayed throughout many of Flannery O’Connor’s short stories. In many of her short stories, O’Connor exposes the dark side of human nature and implements violent and brutal elements in order to emphasize her religious viewpoints. In the short stores “A Good Man Is Hard to Find” and “Revelation”, O’Connor explicitly depicts this violence to highlight the presence and action of holy grace that is given to a protagonist who exudes hypocritical qualities.
A good man really is hard to find. But what is the real definition of a real man? Maybe it is not just the prince charming you see in fairy tales or the perfect guy walking down Sixth Ave. that you pass by everyday to work. Maybe a good guy is simply someone that is good what they do. In this case the relationship between the grandmother and the misfit is just that. The only thing is if the reader sees it as clearly as the author would like them too or simply as she does.
Mary Flannery O’Connor, the writer of many short stories known for their cruel endings and religious themes, wrote “A Good Man Is Hard to Find” in 1955. “Her works combine flat realism with grotesque situations; violence occurs without apparent reason or preparation.” (Roberts 429). “A Good Man Is Hard to Find” is about a southern family’s trip to Florida which takes a dramatic turn. This story was written in O’Connor’s first collection of short stories. “A Good Man Is Hard to Find” is a compelling story of tragedy that utilizes humor and irony to draw the reader’s attention, and two major characters to convey the authors central theme.
Throughout the short story, “A Good Man Is Hard to Find,” a grandmother goes on vacation in Florida with her son and his family. She is wary of an escaped criminal who may possibly be there, but no one takes her worry into consideration. The family eventually comes face to face with the criminal and lose their lives because of it. In “A Worn Path,” an elderly woman begins a long and tiresome journey in an effort to reach a town to acquire medicine for her sick grandson. The stories “A Good Man Is Hard to Find,” written by Flannery O’Connor, and “A Worn Path,” by Eudora Welty, have distinctly different writing styles that impact the story and how they utilize certain literary devices throughout them. The setting, point of view and imagery
In this case, the grandmother's role is to be a grandmother; however, she is incapable of doing that, so she is not taking her faith seriously enough. It is seen in the bible that grandparents had very close relationships with their grandchildren, so it would be expected that the grandmother would have a meaningful relationship with her two grandkids, June Star and John Wesley. It is evident in the short story that they do not have a close relationship because the grandkids would actually prefer their grandmother not to come on the trip with them. John Wesley says, “...why dontcha stay at home” (O’Connor 1) as a response to his grandmother’s constant complaining about where the family was going on their trip. If she were a true, faithful, Christian grandmother, he would have loved to have her on the trip with them, yet he was not and therefore, again, the grandmother is not fulfilling her role from God.
In the short story “A Good Man is Hard to Find” Flannery O’Connor brings a family road trip to life writing a tale of misfortune and adventure throughout travel. I can relate to her story based on the road trips taken over the years with my family. While not one trip stands out in my mind, collectively fragments of adventures across the states come to me. Growing up we would travel at least once a year if not more, solely relying on the pavement as transportation we would take SUV’s to the islands south or take a bus to New York. With my three sisters, various animals, as well occasional grandparents accompanying these journeys, morale tended to grow hectic. My parents although very kind, were incredibly strict through the entirety of my adolescence, when my sisters and I would argue they would shut it down almost immediately. Now when arguments are shut down without resolve they typically fester, and so emotions would explode between the children. The back and forth bickering in “a good man is hard to find” reminds me of petty arguments on late nights or days with little sleep and even more driving.
Character Analysis: A Good Man is Hard to Find In “A Good Man is Hard to Find” by Flannery O’Connor, the grandmother is seen as the main character, protagonist, and tragic hero. The grandmother is really not in a typical happy family and she really isn’t liked, but she still tags along with the family on a road trip to Florida from the peach state, Georgia. Throughout the story the grandma has said a good man is really hard to find and why is that so. All the things she talked became true when the misfit a killing man, found the family on the side of the road. .
"A Good Man is Hard to Find" is an extremely powerful commentary that elucidates Flannery O'Connor's opinions about religion and society. Like the majority of her other works, " A Good Man is Hard to Find" has attracted many "interpretations based on Christian dogma" (Bandy 1). These Christian explications are justified because Miss O'Connor is notorious for expressing Catholic doctrines through her fiction. Once she even remarked "I see from the standpoint of Christian orthodoxy" (Kropf 1). This longstanding reputation compels every critic of O'Connor to expose the religious convictions encrypted within her stories. The grandmother's final gesture towards the Misfit is not a
