In the first book of the Hunger Games Trilogy, The Hunger Games, the protagonist Katniss Everdeen must overcome several hardships. For example, after her father’s sudden death in a mining accident Katniss was forced to take care of her family. She had to learn to fend for herself, as well as her mother and sister. For the most part Katniss was able to live with her new responsibilities by keeping her family out of harm's way, feeding, and clothing them. Alas, when the tributes were selected to participate in the Annual Hunger Games Prim’s name was chosen. In a desperate attempt to save her younger sister, Katniss volunteered to take the place of Prim. Also, while in the arena Katniss faced many obstacles. The worst of which was trying to not only keep herself alive, but save her new romantic interest Peeta safe too. Katniss was a fighter and she prevailed many bumps in the road.
The first major challenge Katniss faced was adapting to life without her father. With the help of her close friend and companion Gale, she was able to hunt and forage to feed Prim and her mother. Illegally, Katniss would go over the fence to further her archery skills and hunt …show more content…

The most apparent and impactful of which was the sudden romantic interest Katniss and Peeta shared. Before the tributes entered the arena, Peeta revealed his feelings for Katniss. Although she didn’t realize it, Katniss fully reciprocated these “feelings.”This led to probably the most strenuous challenge Katniss had to rival against. Only one person was to come out of the arena alive, and Peeta or Katniss wanted the other to die. Falling in love ended up being the hardest situation for Katniss to survive. Fortunately, the Gamemaker changed the rules when the hopeless tributes threatened to commit suicide rather than kill the other.
