Poetry is a reflection of society. To understand society, we need to understand poetry and, what it depends on. A poem's theme depends mostly on its diction and tone. Diction is the choice of words so, it is a way to express feelings and, emotions. Diction gives an insight of the main idea or some clues in the poem. Tone is the general character or attitude of a poem and, it helps identify what the poet was trying to reach or send, whether it was an idea or a thought. Accordingly, both Lovelace's and Tennyson's poems had a different tone and diction from both Borden's and Owen's poems. As people evolved and, became more knowledgeable of what war really is about, the themes became more depressing, because it showcases what war really was which is a waste of human life. Throughout the poem different tones and attitudes are displayed to describe the mud. At first the actual title of the poem is the song and a song is meant to be something that has great beauty and sounds pleasing and something that you find enjoyable. The mud is meant to be something very relaxing and, calming. Mary also used diction such as pale yellow which can offer hope and happiness and described the mud as satin which is a smooth and glossy fabric and is a symbol of beauty. Unlike the first two poems, all of the diction that Borden in "The Song of the Mud" gives us a tone that it is something positive and beautiful. She also used words like to gleam and light, she used dictions like these to represent life and rebirth, like the mud covering the war like a fresh start of new earth to start new. On the other hand, the first two poems used words like "death" and "fly" to showcase that war is about death and honor in a direct way. Diction is important in this poem, because it's suggested a different meaning of the theme. Mary's usage of gurgle could imply death in song or drowning and it could also mean laughter so the tone is very unique in this poem. Mary's tone is one of almost dark humor as she describes the soldiers "dressed" in the mud.
