A current issue being debated about American national security applies to border security. The U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s top priority is “to keep terrorists and their weapons from entering the U.S. while welcoming all legitimate travelers and commerce.” (U.S. Border Patrol, 2016) So why has this issue become such a huge deal? According to a CSMonitor article,
The debate over security along the US-Mexico border isn’t just about the millions of unauthorized migrants who have crossed the international boundary seeking work and better lives. And it isn’t just about the drug smugglers and assorted other criminals who routinely use the border as an easy back door into America. There is potentially a greater threat from a porous southern border. (Richey, 2017)
What is this potential great threat? The possibility for terrorists to gain access into the United States by way of Mexico. …show more content…

The first solution is to build a wall which would create a physical barrier between the United States and Mexico. The second solution is to maintain and increase efforts to enhance border security depending on the numerous threats that are faced at the border. (The Heritage Foundation, 2017)
The preferable plan solution would be to maintain and increase efforts to enhance border security. According the Heritage Foundation, this would include the use of UAVs, cameras, and sensors, to give the Border Patrol the monitoring and detection equipment needed to support this crucial mission. Also, the U.S. and Mexican law enforcement would need to come together in agreement in this process. Furthermore, “Congress and the Administration would need to ensure that the U.S. Coast Guard has adequate vessels and personnel to fulfill its missions and prevent illegal immigration and smuggling via the sea. Critically, most of these solutions can be addressed through the normal budgeting and appropriations process.” (The Heritage Foundation,
