The United States border with Mexico is a controversial topic that has been the subject of debate recently. It is without question a problem that needs to be fixed. Currently most policies are focused on the manpower, infrastructure, and security of the border itself. However the border security is changed there will always be a demand for illegal immigrants and drug smugglers to cross the border into America. That why we should try to disrupt that demand by legalizing marijuana in the United States, put more resources into fighting cartels, and invest into the Mexican economy. As we all know, a main part of Donald Trump’s presidential campaign was to build a wall between the United States and Mexico. This is a viable option as the number of illegal immigrants continues to rise every day. Because of this, illegal immigration needs to be reformed and fixed in this country before it causes chaos that cannot be stopped. The point is, illegal immigrants are illegal, which means they are here illegally, and are breaking the law. We are a nation of laws, and shouldn’t allow the illegal aliens to stay here permanently.

Border security it’s been a problem as early as 1904. Since the inception of the U.S. Border Patrol (USBP) in 1924, enormous changes have affected almost every aspect of its operation, thus, their main mission remain the same “To Protect our Borders”. Despite a big increase on the amount of money, manpower, and new strategies the security of our country by the U.S. Border Patrol has proven to be a difficult task. Weakness in our borders allows terrorist and smugglers, as well as thousands of illegal immigrants, easy entrance to the United States. New strong immigration laws are in dire need of changing, as well as stricter punishments and fines for all immigrants caught crossing our borders illegally.

Today there is close to 11.7 million immigrants that are currently living in the United States illegally. These immigrants consist of a population that has changed little over the last three years, but shows signs that it may start possibly increasing again in the near future (Preston). Texas being right on the border has seen a constant flow of immigrants coming in across the border. I personally have witnessed illegal immigrants travel across open land near Laredo Texas, which had frightened because I didn’t know if they are apart of a drug cartel or not. This brings up the issue that there are not just migrant farmers traveling across from Mexico, but also immigrants coming from terrorist based nations that are a threat to the United States.

As the economic relationship between the United States and Mexico has extended, so has have the challenges that have threatened the security of the border of the United States. The United States is committed on constructing durable security measures to protect our border. The security of the border will always entail the immediate attention from both sides of the border in order to be able to keep the community safe.
