In his memoir Born a Crime, Trevor Noah claims that knowing multiple languages benefits a person because it allows him/her to increase their familiarity and improve their perception of you. Primarily, knowing multiple languages allows you to escape situations you would otherwise not be able to. Trevor learned many languages as a child and used this to his advantage multiple times. One time that he used it was when he was walking down the street and noticed that a group of men was following him and they said, “Let’s get this white guy” so Trevore turned around and said, “Yo, guys, why don’t we just mug someone together” (55). My father travels the world a lot, he has been to every continent multiple times and Europe is one of the main places he goes to as he has visited there almost 16 times in his life. As he travels so much he is forced to learn six different languages and he knows six: French, Spanish, German, Portuguese, Polish, and English, and he is currently learning Mandarin. Knowing these languages helps a lot when we travel as a family. He can communicate with them in their language and every time they are shocked. Well, one time we were in Mexico and we were being followed by a car and my dad pulled over and asked them what the problem was in Spanish and then they started talking and it ended with the guys laughing and wishing us good travels. In addition, knowing multiple languages allows you to blend in even if you might look like you stick out. Trevor and his mother went shopping and when she entered the store the worker said, “Follow those blacks in case they steal something” (55).
