Born In Slavery: Slave Narratives

Throughout the semester, it has been a primary discussion of the differing ideas of freedom that are presented throughout the numerous narratives. One of the main differences amongst the narratives is the different experiences that results in where people are positioned in their lives, such formally enslaved people or people never enslaved. For example, there is exposure to the life of a slave in the Born in Slavery: Slave Narratives. The belief amongst people is that people enslaved are unhappy in their enslaved positions. As it is written by William Moore, Emma Blalock, John C. Bectom, Uncle David Blount, discussing the brutal conditions and hardships of slavery that are come to known throughout history. But reading the narrative, it is made clear that there is a contrarian opinion in a few of the narratives, in that a number of slaves are born into slavery and that is the only life they are familiar with. Bectom, and Uncle David Blount & the letters of King Afonso I, there are different perspectives of freedom through the discussion of slavery. Slavery is seen in multiple different ways, as slaves have recalled their experiences as negative, demeaning, dehumanizing. On the other hand, the other perspective of a better experience, as these slaves would be given clothes, food, shelter, work, etc. The argument can be taken place in that slaves were unaware of another form of freedom, in that most slaves are born into this position and do not know another way of freedom, as having to pay and do things for themselves would cause separate problems. From a non-enslaved voice in King Afonso I, proclaiming that slaves should not be used as capital in the trading market, as it is dehumanizing.
