Guardians of the galaxy starts off on Earth in the year 1988. Shortly after the death of his mother, young Peter Quill gets abducted by an alien space craft and thus enters Director James Gunn’s version of a marvel sci-fi action movie. Sci-fi films have been around since 1902 and became popular since then. With so much history in film, surely it could be said that any new movie is just borrowing elements from other films. In this essay, I will explore key movie concepts which have been repeated from similar films and explain how this marvel movie differs from others. I will also show how the marvel comics depicted the main characters as opposed to how the film changed them.

The movie also shows that Peter’s mother calls him star lord (see figure 3 for an image of Peter Quill). There is also a lot of mystery surrounding Peter’s father. To most it would seem as if he is just another dead-beat father who abandoned his family although Peter’s mother says on her death bed, “he was an angel composed of pure light”. This could hint to either the fact that he is pure at heart of that he literally comes from the sky. The marvel comic books tell a different story than what is depicted in the movie. For starters, it is well known that Peters father came from an alien race called the Spatori (R. Bricken, 2014). Peter Quills mother was killed by two aliens in the comics. The aliens who had killed her were seeking to wipe out the Spatori bloodline of which Peter is half. In the Marvel comic books, Peter was not kidnapped by aliens in his youth but had become an astronaut and thus the star lord (A.Rutt, …show more content…
She sports green skin and red hair as seen in figure 9 (see figure 9). She was raised by Thanos both in the film and in the Marvel comic books. Unlike her “sister” Nebula, Gomora is opposed to Thanos’ plan to destroy the universe. In the Marvel comic books for her character, it is shown that Thanos had cybernetic enhancements made to Gamora and Nebula, which explains their strength (R. Bricken, 2014)
Thanos is depicted as the ultimate villain who is eager to destroy the universe see figure 10). His motivation as to why he wishes to do this is a mystery. The Marvel comic book universe shows that he is seeking to become worthy of the Marvel personification of death. To do this he seeks to destroy life (A. Riesman, 2014).
Guardians of the galaxy boasts a team of five misfits who could also be described as anti-heroes. All of the guardians are either thieves, bounty hunters or assassins. This kind of team can also be seen in the Marvel film The Avengers (see figure 11) (TV tropes,
The Star Wars franchise has been considered a staple of the cinematic universe for forty years, due to its popularity and ability to connect with its viewers. It also has one of the largest fan-bases in cinema, with fans clamoring to watch the latest films and elevating the actors in said films to instant stardom. The question that normally follows this understanding is how the space “epic” became so popular; how a relatively low-budget film would go on to gross over $750 million at the box office. This may be attributed to the “universal” themes found in its narrative, which creator George Lucas had in mind during inception. In this sense, the “universal” themes can be attributed from religious motifs found in many belief systems. The 1st film in the original trilogy, A New Hope, follows the hero Luke Skywalker and his friends as they help the Rebel Alliance defeat the Galactic Empire. Embedded in the film are religious concepts such as the battle between good and evil, heroic calling, and an omnipresent essence found everywhere. The religious themes found in A New Hope may be the answer for the film’s extreme popularity.
innocent people. In most cases there is a villain that oppose these super hero’s. They
Superman, Wonder Woman, Spiderman—what do all these characters have in common? They are all products of the human aspiration to be saved. The word hero is passed around too much these days. A hero is not a football player that scores the game-winning touchdown or the goaltender who saves his team from a loss. A hero is usually an ordinary person that did extraordinary things. A true hero is really never a hero at all; at least not in their own mind. However, there are various cases today in which we see the exact opposites of these characters, the anti-heroes. The anti-hero is one who cannot be classified as a hero, for that said character lacks natural heroic qualities. However, the anti-hero cannot be described as a villain either.
The Star Wars franchise has been a beloved series from Lucas Films since the first movie aired in 1977. Since then, the directors have composed a saga of movies that are dramatic and awe inspiring to the audience. In order to perceive what makes these films so popular to the audience, we must analyze the techniques used in one of the saga’s latest installments, Star Wars: Rogue One. This film was an installment meant to be set in the time period between Star Wars 3: The Return of the Sith, and Star Wars 4: A New Hope. The film pictures the events that happened in order to receive the plans for the Death Star, and interstellar spacecraft designed to be capable of destroying entire planets. (could
Reinterpretations have played a major role in all forms of entertainment. They provide another, unique perspective on something old, something you may have read or seen. They make it possible to relive, or re-experience something that you cherished, or they can enable you to love something you hated. Reinterpretations have a lot of artistic power, as can be seen in a review of The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, written by Robert Louis Stevenson, compared to The Incredible Hulk, directed by Louis Leterrier. The value of reinterpretations can be explored through the use of these two texts by looking at the theme of duplicity in man, and analysing the characters Bruce Banner and Dr Jekyll.

Being one of the world’s most popular art forms, it was inevitable that these archetypes would find their way into film as well. In this essay I will argue that the
Anti-heroes do not solely exist in the fictional world. There are people in the real world, everyday who fit the anti-hero description. They are… the Mob. In ancient times loyalty was purest form of respect. It was a way of life. One was loyal to his or her family, govern, king, and God. Hand in hand with loyalty, comes the right to revenge. The Mob is one of the few “societies” that has reserved that tradition. For example: when a family member is assassinated, it is not only the right, but also the duty of the surviving family to avenge that death. This loyalty to one’s own, coupled with the fierce determination to protect them, are incredibly heroic qualities. Organized crime families are oohed and ahhed by the press and pop culture, and have their own fans. While these people are not ideal role models, they possess heroic qualities worthy of aspiration.
It is a long standing, recognized fact that the classic Star Wars films exhibited key archetypes in the human psyche. These included not only such universal themes as the male coming of age tale and feminism, but also somewhat more obscure examples. These included, but were not limited to, the Hero, the Anti Hero, the Mother, the Wise Old Man, the Devil, the Mentor, the Father, and others. These and others interact in a saga of events that leads the films' main characters to the 'spiritual' goal of self actualization. Though Star Wars will be the topic of this paper, it holds true that these themes are explored throughout pop culture, pointing to the idiotropic role of fiction in general. We play these stories out in our heads not simply for the flashes and bangs of entertainment value, but also, if only subconciously, to hold up a mirror our own souls and better understand the human condition.
D. Thesis: To understand the impact Marvel has on our culture today, we must delve deeply into its rich history.

The good thing about films is that we not only have the opportunity to choose from a wide selection of different genres, but also compare them and understand their purpose in the world. The Horror genre has used the basic principles throughout time, and as a result, films of this type have not proven to be as timeless as another genre: Science Fiction/Fantasy. At first, these two genres might at times seem similar as they have at several occasions been blended together, but their basic, common theme serves different meanings about humans. I shall compare and contrast these two genres and focus on both classic films and modern films. From the Horror genre perspective I shall discuss Psycho (1960) and The Mist (2007), while in the Science Fiction/Fantasy genre I will examine 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968), Pan’s Labyrinth (2006), and Serenity (2005). Although the Science Fiction/Fantasy genre and the Horror Genre share some similarities, the differences lie in their focus on human progress.
Most of the science fiction works contain a crucial message that the writer wishes to convey to the viewers. There are two categories of film message, one is positive and the other is negative. A positive message is one that is expected to have favourable outcome to the audience, and continuously aiming to promote better societal changes. In contrast, a negative message is one that could deliver threats or unpleasant information to the audience, which could have significant impact on the normal order of the society. This essay will argue that if the message contains positive elements, then it is not a bad sign to embed science fiction works with a message. First, this essay will suggest that the well-integrated message within a particular
Whether you fancy reading a book or watching a film, whether you consider yourself a bookworm or a movie enthusiast, or perhaps both or even something else entirely; there is bound to be something suitable for your tastes and preferences. In our day and age, many books often get adapted into films. This change of discourse undoubtedly affects the way we perceive the piece. An example for a book that has been adapted into a movie is the young adult novel “The Fault in Our Stars” by American author John Green.
