That is a valuable and entailed response to the fact that we as the student’s educators, we try to teach what are the school polices, procedures, and requirement’s while in their campus. Yet many times the student’s culture takes a toll on the day to day operation of a student’s day of instruction. When a student is till they need to do a certain responsibility to the polices. They tend to act like they must follow the rule their parents have installed in them. Schools are as well required to hold the students accountable for their actions but reality is in the times of today, parents tell their student that they make the rules and they need to follow them. When the Supreme Court ruled that nine teenagers would be chosen to integrate LIttle Rock’s Central High School, the citizens of Little Rock responded in many different ways. Most of the students at Central High School were very rude to the nine students and very few were kind to them. In the book there were many instances were the students were rude but one example was on page 72 when the nine students walked in the school most students were yelling very rude things to them.

At Hazelwood High School, they do things differently than at my school. At Hazelwood, most of the people worry about themselves and nobody else. Most of the school doesn’t get good grades and the school does not do anything about it. One day in English class Andy walked out when they were reading Macbeth because it was too emotional for Andy to handle. His friends were concerned and told the school counselor. They said, “But… but… it seems like… like… he needs help or somethin’.” Then the counselor said, “Well, I probably shouldn’t tell you boys this, but he is getting some outside counseling… So you boys can relax and be assured that he is getting whatever help he needs”(100). At Harrisburg High School, if someone had an issue like that, the counselors and teachers would be concerned, even if the person was getting outside help. Another thing about education that is different than mine is the school. In Ronda’s English homework, she wrote, “Our school building must have been built about a million years ago, because it was brown and tall and raggedy-looking, but it fit right in with the rest of the day”(16). There were many diverse aspects to this book. Most of this book is a recall from either the main character, or one of his students. This book is intended to open people’s eyes to see that in order to change the world we must first change ourselves. Being able to go through this story and see the mistakes, and the good decisions, teachers in Michie’s life have made, has taught me that the best way to teach is through love, justice, cultural empathy and imagination. Some of the points brought up in this book include the positive and negative sides of physical contact with a student, classification/stereotyping, race, gangs, police brutality/lack of justice, and children not being able to escape peer pressure.
Emma Williams Ms. Allen-Gordon English 101 4 April 2024 The Overly-Sensitive American: An analysis on “The Coddling of the American Mind” “The Coddling of the American Mind,” an argumentative essay written by Greg Lukianoff and Jonathan Haidt, concerns the facts of colleges protecting their students too much. They, as authors point out, point to the “climate” of school settings, referring to how schools are using vindictive protectiveness in a way that “poorly prepares them for the real world”. As a whole, I think the author's thesis was that the overprotectiveness schools are now putting out is doing more harm than good. When Mr. Clark originally taught at Eastside High School, the culture seemed very competitive and full of high standards. The students seemed very eager to learn and at a pretty high level for their age. Twenty years later, the culture flips dramatically. The school quickly goes from pristine to a graffiti-infested playground. The teachers are the prey and the students (mainly the ‘hoodlums’) pretty much do as they please. Education is a small goal for any of the students, and the students that do want to do well fear those “hoodlums.” Mr. Clark identifies this immediately when returning to Eastside High. During his first assembly, Mr. Clark let the entire school know that he was the HNIC. He gathered up all the trouble makers and sent them home, expelling them from school. Most were drug dealers, 5th year students, or drug abusers that were dulling the spark of the other students.

Cassill and he writes about an African American family that struggles with getting into an all white school. John Hawkins emotions were developed in R.V. Cassill’s story that brought out the act of his family, school, and the fighting going on around him.

Rogers emphasises the need for teachers to establish a set of student led classroom rights, rules and responsibilities during the establishment period of the year (Killian, Ogden, Shipston, & Facas, 2017). These rights, responsibilities and rules entail the behaviours that are expected in the classroom and protect the student’s rights to; feel safe, be treated with respect and to learn. The rules are to be developed reasonably and provide freedom in the sense students are free to move around the boundaries. As the rules are decided and agreed upon by the students, this develops a sense of understanding and accountability for their own behaviour and learning (Edwards, & Watts, 2008). The existence of honor codes has had basis in helping students learn since their inception, but there are still those who object to their very definition. Nearly every institution centered around the education of children has some sort of code of conduct or set of rules in place for the betterment of the students. However, the term ‘honor’ in the title ‘honor code’ is what people can occasionally take issue with, as the term often implies a much more respectful idea. This issue leads one to question the purpose of honor codes. Although honor codes, like that of the school in Tobias Wolff’s Old School, exist for the purpose of bettering the students by ensuring that they all have an equal chance and that they all do their own work, Mr. Ramsey objects to his school’s honor code because he believes in a much more personal and valuable meaning of the word ‘honor’.
Not following society’s expectations has consequences such as being an outcast or being different from everyone. Being different is sometimes where bullying comes into play. Society is known to crush individuality. (Litt, Sheldon) The idea is to live life by your own rules and do as you please.
The future working men and women who enter college are adults and will be treated as such. An adult is one who has matured to know what is right and what is wrong. The importance of a rule is a line between right and wrong that many places including colleges have as a guiding tool. College students who enter are expected to follow rules as the rules are meant to protect us and set a guideline. Adults also know how to be self-sufficient, being able to do their work, without anyone’s help or stealing someone else’s work: plagiarism. College is where we are expected to perform to the best of our abilities because as students we have a fierce ambition to get ahead by earning a degree.
