As I look back on my time as an Associate member a lot of memories come into mind; it is an experience that will have a lasting impact on me for the rest of my life. The experiences during AMship will forever be engrained in my memory, but one night in particular will always stand out when talking about AMship. Before going into Bottle Pass night I understood the concept of a brotherhood, but I never knew how it felt to be a part of one. After Bottle Pass night however that all changed, and for that reason it will always be my favorite part of AMship. It was pretty incredible that a group of guys were comfortable enough, with each other, to share their life stories. In my opinion, that evening brought our class closer than ever before; a sense
In September, I had the opportunity to visit the Naval Academy for a “Candidate Visit Weekend.” During my two-night visit, I was paired with a current midshipman, whom I accompanied to classes, meals, and a sports practice. Personally experiencing daily life at the Academy and meeting current midshipmen has reinforced my desire to join their ranks. The most inspiring thing about the midshipmen I met was the effort that they put into succeeding. Being a part of this culture, even for two days, has shown me that I can work just a little harder, and that I can push myself just a little further. Since returning home, I have done just that in numerous ways.
Men of Alpha Phi Alpha such as James Felton and Vaun Davis are key to why I want to pursue my aspirations of someday becoming a brother of Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity incorporated. Both James and Vaun’s unselfishness has allowed me to grow as a leader and also into a man. These role models have opened numerous doors for me that have resulted into various benefits and opportunities. I hope my encounters with great Alpha Men such as James Felton and Vaun Davis will allow me the opportunity of joining the highly respected brotherhood. Another abundant encounter that I have experienced with Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated, is the true meaning and display of brotherhood. For years I have watched the interactions and connections of men of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated I have noticed that each member that I have encountered expresses and implements the true meaning of brotherhood. I profoundly believe in the bond of brotherhood and fraternity. In my belief, if granted the chance to uphold the unbreakable bond such as the brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated, the bond would enhance my credentials while assisting and challenging others. The brotherhood would push me to
After becoming a member of the Mu Alpha Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha, I was elected to be chapter president that is relatively bold move for the chapter and seemingly unheard of for a chapter to put someone with less fraternity experience at the head. There was an immense
A club that I had always wanted to be apart of since my freshman year of highschool was The Beta Club.
Throughout my time at Gamma Phi Beta, I have made a lot of meaningful memories. My favorite memory may be small to most people, but it has had major impact on my life. Just a few months after joining Gamma Phi Beta, I moved into our chapter facility. On the first night of living in my roommate, who I had never really talked, and I started talking. A little over four hours, closely approach 2:00am, we had told each other our life stories, share why Gamma Phi Beta has been so impactful, and more importantly laugh at ourselves. This conversation was one of the most pivotal times in Gamma Phi Beta because it showed me that you can be completely different from a sister but still share all the same values. To this day, even though we do not live together anymore, my former is still one of my very best friends who I can tell absolutely anything. I am so fortunate that Gamma Phi Beta has given me sisters that share the same values, but can be completely different from me.
In the beginning of senior year, I joined one of the largest and most diverse club in the engineering department, Society of Women
During the interview, I focused on questions to pertained to what the fraternity has done for them. An impactful quote I got during the interview that described what the fraternity has done for one of my brothers was, “Guys that normally wouldn’t be together, coming together and actually doing fun stuff. The fraternity has made me really jump out of my comfort zone and become a different person than I was before” (Anonymous).
True Friendship and Brotherhood is a key value because it goes way beyond just being in a community together. We truly have a special bond of friendship and brotherhood with each other that lasts a lifetime. A lot of the time the brothers will become their best man in their weddings. Many brother get together after graduation for Alumni bonging time. Alumni today go on fishing trips, golf and just have dinner together with brothers that they had been together with in their undergraduate years at Theta
The men of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated that I have had the privilege of being in contact with all were noble men and equally important leaders. I have had the privilege of interacting with many men throughout mentoring programs and community service projects and often found that those whom I deeply admire shared the common brotherhood of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Incorporated. My undergraduate advisor Dr. Fredrick S. Stephens is one of those men that have had a major impact in my life and induction into Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated. I come from a family that has strong beliefs in civic engagement. His example and guidance throughout my college experience challenged me to be greater leader and servant of m community. I needed that guidance to enhance my development as a professional social worker and in life.
This semester I participated in a service learning partnership with two other students. Through the semester I spent a little over ten hours with each of my partners. Most of the activities we participated in were activities in which we were able to get to know one other on more of a personal level. The thing that made this partnership interesting was the fact we were all from different parts of the world. Which means the way we had grown up was very different for each of us.
As I entered the Alpha’s Probate I heard the uproar from the supporters of the newly inducted young men. They chanted throughout the night and were so happy to be “Ice cold brothers”, although it meant so much more to them. It meant they would be a part of a brotherhood, forever. I plan to debunk the stereotype and gain a new perspective on fraternities, and more specifically ULM’s Eta Chi chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Inc.
When thinking about a personal experience that has greatly affected my life, the first thought that comes to mind is the week that I spent at the California State University of Sacramento (SAC State) attending the Boys State program. The American Legion Boy’s State program is where eleventh grade boys from across the state come together to learn about how the government of California functions. However, Boys State was much more than that for me. That one week had a greater effect on my life than any other experience I have had before.
This scenario can impact me because it makes me think harder about watching people drink. You never know what could happen to someone when they are under the influence. You have to be alert and understand what is going on, and what situation you might have put yourself in. Always know what recourses you have, and who you should be able to contact in case of emergency. This incident showed me that alcohol is nothing to play with, and people can really get hurt if it came down to it. The other boys in the fraternity never knew something like this was going to happen, and they were not prepared for what ended up happening in the end.
I have learned so much through the pledging process. Even though scheduling was very stressful, I liked how we had time to get close to the brothers through doing brother dates with them. Before pledging, I felt like I was very behind everyone. I wasn’t really close to any of the brothers or didn’t even talk much with them because I was really sick and missed the first rush. Everyone else seemed closer to brothers than me; however, through doing the bro dates, I got to talk to them for an hour or do fun activities and got to know them better. I also loved painting the rock. I think painting the rock helped the pledge brothers to bond the most effectively. I remember we had to paint our rock few more times after we have done so because other
Gay and Straight Alliance Club, a memorable experience where I got to talk to various LGBT people who were such outgoing and humorous people, they really demonstrate on how people that have a considerable difference with each other should really act. I was a lucky I had an extremely helpful friend that recommended to come over to Gay and Straight Alliance on Friday at lunch, she said that they were held every Friday and that it would be a great place to go for my observation. I was skeptical at first because I don’t like to take on new experiences plus that fact that it might really not be the best place to go for my observation, but either way I still chose to go. On Friday, February 14, I was in a frenzy to try and find someone I would
