“They had to move here because they weren't safe from the bombings,” our teacher prepared us for the upcoming arrival. I will never forget the confusion swirling through my head at that moment. The new girl coming to my tiny, private middle school was moving all the way from Syria. At the time, little twelve-year-old me just saw the potential for a new friend, as I was also the new kid at school. However, the moment I heard the word bombing, I was filled with questions. Why was somebody in danger of a bombing? In my western, oriented mind, there was no major conflict in the world which could involve bombs. But soon my knowledge of the world would drastically change.
Layla seemed to be living a perfectly normal life on the outside. However,

We made memories together in the present and discussed our plans for the future. The topic of her past was always avoided, however, especially that of being separated from her immediate family. Attending a new school was scary for me, but Layla helped to show me that it would be alright. Instead of feeling upset over students already having inside jokes, we made our own. Layla provided me with precious memories and showed me how rewarding it can be to make new friends. However, the happiness of meeting a new friend did not last forever. The day of my 12th birthday party seemed to be going perfectly until Layla stood up on my couch to announce to everyone that her dad could not find a job so she had to move back to Turkey in a week to be with her family. Heart wrenched. I felt as if the best friend necklace that matched hers had been ripped off my neck and shattered into a million pieces. After a night full of hugging and crying, my sadness turned to anger. A war happening thousands of miles away was responsible for not only pulling us apart but also keeping Layla away from her family. Despite the physical distance of the war, I felt as if Layla, as well as myself, were deep in
The author of the book, John Hersey, had a good purpose in telling so many individual anecdotes about the life before the bomb. He focused on expressing the stories of these survivors in a way in which the reader could see it from their point of view. His aim was to demonstrate that each individual was a real human being with real feelings just like us. The author seeks to make sure that readers understand that the bombings happened to people who had a daily life and were astonished by what had happened. Hersey demonstrates that the bombing impacted people who had previously been undergoing a lot in life.
When I first browsed through the different topics on which we were to write essays on, I was ecstatic when I saw one about rock and roll. Once I started skimming through all the bands and artists I know and love, I knew there would be no problem writing this essay. I firmly believe that I was born in the wrong generation of music because I am a hardcore oldies junkie at heart. For this reason, the bands I have selected are as follows: The Beastie Boys, Fleetwood Mac, The Police, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Johnny Cash, and The Righteous Brothers.
The circumstances surrounding September 11th 2001 seem to be too much for a young child to grasp. At the age of eleven, I remember this day so vividly, but at such a young age I was unable to understand everything that was taking place before me. Although this day did not affect me directly, with time I have come to understand that situations as this one affects a nation as a whole. It seemed to be my first exposure to war in which I could remember. Beforehand, I knew nothing about what terrorist were and my country fighting in war seemed to be the least of my worries. Over time, I would learn more about the two. Today, as I grow into an adult I see the effects of current wars on children. I work in an environment where I come in close contact with children whose parents serve in the military. Although many of these children have no idea about the purpose of war or the outcome it may bring, they do know it as the single thing that takes their parents away for months at a time. I am mindful of the different reactions of these children. The stability in their life is altered with the absence of one parent being gone for long periods of time. The stability is what helps to build a strong family, and Garbarino states:
When the Atomic Bomb exploded over the city of Hiroshima, the people who experienced it were not expecting it to occur the way it did. We were given an insight of the lives of several characters on that fateful morning in August in 1945. Neighboring towns had all been bombarded by American B-29 raids, but so far Hiroshima had been spared and rumors spread that “something special” was in store for them. Every plane that flew overhead was a considered a threat and would set off the air raid warning, consequently that morning people even though the siren sounded earlier people were either going about their everyday routines or preparing for the worst. The people of Hiroshima were completely confused when the atomic bomb was dropped over their city because they were all expecting a warning of some kind, either from the U.S or the air-raid sirens but there was nothing heard before the bomb was dropped. Hersey describes it as a “noiseless flash,” which conjures the image of silence and a startlingly bright light as total buildings were decimated. With the dropping of the Atomic Bomb over Hiroshima, we ushered in a new age of
On that September day there was a tragedy in the United States, 9-11-01. Even if some of us were not born, we still know what happened. This event affected a lot of people and many were heart broken. The people who had the nerve to do this, Al Qaeda, a terrorist group that was located in Iraq. This essay will focus on the effects of the attack. Although this essay will cover quite a few effects it will not cover all of them. The items we will cover will range from new anti-terrorist organizations to slight airway fees.
I’m going to writing about the bombing in Birmingham. If you don’t know about what, when, and how it happened this is the paper you’re looking. You might have questions about the things I talk about in this paper. But it’s ok because when I first started reading articles about my topic it was confusing. So relax, read this paper, and will you understand more about the bombing in Birmingham.
Within minutes, the entire city of Hiroshima is completely obliterated just because of a single bomb on the 6th of August, 1945. “Hiroshima does not look like a bombed city. It looks as if a monster steamroller had passed over it and squashed it out of existence” said Australian journalist, Wilfred Burchett. That alone is devastating enough but this bombing affected more than just that particular city-- it shook the entire globe. This bomb is the most influential bombing in history because of just the fact alone that it had the ability to make individual people “vanish” into thin air, it was the first shot in the Cold War and it changed an entire country’s society.
Terrorist attacks are a consistent global occurrence. The 2005 London underground bombings was an attack which caused largest mass fatality occurrence in the UK since World War 2. As a result the comfort and use of public transport in the UK was greatly impacted. Research into the fatalities and physical repercussions of tragedies are amplified globally. For instance it is considered factual that the
Events such as the Bath School bombing were unheard of. Over time, we realized that planning could lessen consequences from incidents such as this. A basic premise began: identify risk + planning = saved lives. In the 1970’s and 1980’s bomb threats seemed to be the biggest risks to school. Most often, they were pranks to get the school shut down but officials had to take the threats seriously. They could not assume it was just a joke and risk a bomb exploding and killing students.
It was during these attacks that we lost three family members. I remember the night it happened. I was only 10 years old, studying for a science exam that I had the next day. My dad was taking up my work since my mum was in the suburbs for her grandmother’s funeral. I went to bed early that night. I woke up the next morning by sound of bells from the church near my house, barged into my parents room asking them why they hadn't woken me up for my exam. This is when I found out that the city had been attacked last night that school was closed. That
sickness that would go on to kill 100,000 more people. It is stated that “the bombs did...bring an
As cited by Felix et. al., (2010), when schools are located near terrorist attack sites, the teachers and nonteaching personnel must know how to manage their own personal needs along with being able to respond to the personal needs of the students and other traumatized individuals. Consequently, the survivors of traumatic events may show signs of distress, including sadness, shock, and anxiety, these individuals may not be able to resolve their crisis on their own. Therefore, needing the assistance of someone more capable of supporting them and helping them to manage their feelings. As a result, Schools in the Shadow of Terrorism: Psychosocial Adjustment and Interest in Interventions Following Terror Attacks, explored the factors affecting
On August 6th, 1945, an atomic bomb was dropped on the city of Hiroshima, not only killing hundreds but poisoning thousands. The bomb leveled an entire city, and almost destroyed an entire community. In the face of destruction the entire community of Hiroshima bands together to help one another, proving the importance of compassion when they were shown none. The bomb was dropped on innocent citizens after their government refused to surrender, and the consequences of their government’s reaction was placed upon Hiroshima. In this novel you witness the effects of this bomb through multiple characters that are all struggling to not only survive but save those around them.
For years, fans of boy bands have been faced with the difficult decision of choosing a favorite band. New Kids on the Block or Color Me Badd? 98 Degrees or LFO? Now, though, fans of ‘NSYNC and Backstreet Boys may finally have the chance to put their rivalries aside. This weekend, during Comic-Con’s San Diego stop, AJ Mclean, Joey Fatone, and Nick Carter, of boy band fame, promoted the movie Dead Seven. The SyFy channel zombie western is being directed by Carter, who also wrote the movie, and stars, Backstreet Boys’, McLean and Carter, as well as, ‘NSYNC’s, Joey Fatone. The team behind 2013’s Sharknado will be helping execute Carter’s vision; and while the movie has yet to be fully cast, it has been reported that McLean will play the villain’s
These effects demonstrate how events like the Syrian attack can have far reaching side effects on not only the direct victims, but for society across the globe. The victims of this attack are in need of medical assistance and many other basic needs as a result of this attack. While most people see and recognize this need, the social perception of terrorism and middle eastern countries involvement in these acts affects how people and governments react around the world. The social beliefs and values of cultures in the US and many other countries result in delays and debates in appropriate actions to help the people affected by this tragedy. The result is the continuation of the suffering of the Syrian people and uncertainty about if or when a resolution to this war will come. The analysis of this event brings about a much larger question as well, which is why do acts of war like the Syrian chemical attack continue to be issues after centuries of war and the lessons that society has learned from these experiences. Applying the
