TAQ 1 TAQ 1B BRAIN AND SPINAL CORD. Brain is the control centre of the whole body. It functions as the centre of the nervous system. The brain contains neurons which are connected by synapses to several other neurons. These neurons communicate with each other by means of long axons, which carry signal pulses to parts of the brain or body. It divided into three main parts; the Cerebral cortex, the Cerebellum the Pons and Medulla Oblongata. Cerebral Cortex is responsible for emotions, perception and memory while the Cerebellum (hindbrain) is for coordination of movement, posture and balance. This system is divided into two, the sympathetic and parasympathetic system. The sympathetic nervous system prepares the body for an emergency or stressful situation. That is, it regulates fight or flight responses. The parasympathetic division assists in maintain normal body functions and conserves physical resources. Most of autonomic nervous system functions are involuntary but they can also work in connection with the somatic nervous system which provides voluntary control. Neuron (nerve cell) is an electrically stimulated cell that processes and carry information through electrical and chemical signals. These signals between neurons occur through synapses. Synapses are connections between neurons by which information travel from one neuron to another. There are three types of neurons; sensory neuron, motor neuron and relay neuron. Sensory neuron carry its information toward the central nervous .This information or signal is received by dendrite of the neuron and sent via the axon. The axon is responsible for transmitting electro-chemical signals to other neurons. The sensory neurons are responsible for sound, light, touch and all other stimuli influencing the cells of the sensory organs. Motor neuron controls the contraction or relaxation of muscles directly or indirectly. It transmit signals from spinal cord to muscles to produce movement.
