Part One: For your response to the posting assignment, list as many terms as you can think of that describe Brancusi's sculpture. Next to each term, note how that particular descriptor makes you feel. Include also your reflections, impressions, emotions, and associations.
The terms I think of to describe the Brancusi's sculpture is:
I think the sculpture represent a child that is in some sort of distress. As I reflect more on the piece I notice how his head is held to the side and the shoulder is shrugged, which I feel indicates loneliness. The sculpture is very distinctive which led me to believe it may be Brancusi’s knows. My first impression of the sculpture was the seriousness of the piece because it was in black. My second impression I

Much to my surprise there were two sculptures one in black with the lighter background and the other one in white with the darker background. The website shows Brancusi's sculpture in the plaster (white) version from the bronze cast. The purpose is to see the sculpture display differently. The white sculpture is more of a soft focus, with different shot angles, and darker lighting, which presents a different feel than the black sculpture with the lighter lighting. The backgrounds of both imanges are very different and do in a way change my interpretation of the sculpture slightly. Although I still feel the image still represents loneness and saddens the lighter image however illustrated the sculpture features more. It seems to bring the sculpture to the forefront and I notice the distress on the face instantly. Whereas in the lighter background I searched within the picture to pick out what I felt the picture represent. I agree with the readings and from the sculpture we associate colors with different emotions it is a connection to ones inner self. I realize this is indeed one of the ways I interpret art and connect to
It was done in 1995 and is made completely out of Beeswax. The dimensions of the sculpture are 15 ½ x 36x 20” and is on display at the Milwaukee Art Museum. This sculpture was chosen because it reminded of a person in the fetal position, possibly trying to hide from life, which is how I have been feeling lately as I know that finals are coming up. So, the sculpture seemed very fitting. This sculpture could relate to anyone as it is a work of art with different visual elements, structural components, and psychological qualities.
The scale of objects direct the viewer to conventions in order of prestige which resists the passage of time and remains a symbol of magnificence and strength by withstanding the degradation. The time worn ruins impact the painting with its ability to remain erect due to its vastness, for it occupies the majority of the canvas. Its enormous stature and breadth of the columns characterizes the structure as powerful, yet the crumbling regions reveal that its vigor belongs to the past. The degradation and neglect by succeeding societies convey how humans abandoned this empire to proceed with the construction of a new one. Portions of the ceiling sitting upon the columns have crumbled and at the ceiling wooden planks are exposed with plants protruding through the gaps. Although the degradation reduces the ruin’s honor and Roman illusion of immortality, the temple remains an artifact of vanity and majesty. The linear
From an historical perspective, this piece is an excellent example of early classical Rome. You can sense the respect and admiration that the average Roman citizen had for Augustus, in the fine details of the sculpture.
This sculpture is comprised of marble, and due to its large size it was easier for me to develop an impression about the piece because I can focus on specific parts in more detail. To understand the piece, a very visual and detailed perspective is needed. Judging by the way the thighs are represented, it appears as though she is striking a contrapposto pose, which makes her appear static. She has most of her weight shifted on her left leg, but not all of it The focal point of this piece I believe is her robe. It skillfully falls down her left side, while leaving other parts exposed, drawing the main attention of this piece. Few different types of shapes are displayed, except the shape of her legs and the form of the robe. The physical texture was smooth throughout the entire piece, partly due to the material it is made of. There is only this one texture, as her robe and body parts all feel the same.
To start at the beginning or the Canon of these works of art would be to go to the Prehistoric times. To give some background about this time, the prehistoric period was art found when people were still living in caves and just starting the first civilization of humans. According to Smarthistory.org the oldest collection of ornamentation was found in Africa and being over 82,000 years old. The sculpture I'm going to be talking about from this period is the sculpture called “Lion-Human”. The Lion Human to me looks like a tall older man with the characteristics of a lion with a long mane with a long pointed nose. The artist used expressionism to show that the man had the qualities of a man but also had the inner workings of a lion. It was probably how he
I will be analyzing the piece Aeneas and His Family Fleeing Troy. This artwork is currently being displayed at the San Diego Museum of Art, in Balboa Park near downtown San Diego. This painting was made in 1635 during the Baroque Period in France by Simon Vouet. Vouet was the most influential painter of his time and did much to make Paris an artistic center of Europe. Vouet was heavily influenced by Caravaggio who also heavily influenced other painters during Vouet’s time. In this paper, I will be exploring issues such as material, subject matter, scale, historical context, light, human figure, and finally museum context.
There have been countless duels between two opposing sides in the history Roman artistry. This sculpture relief signifies the classic battle of good versus evil. Time and time again, benevolent heroes find themselves in a struggle to combat worthy yet malicious adversaries. The Roman sarcophagus, a two by five feet marble coffin, is certainly no exception. It represents another division to this timeless good-evil epic, its visual characteristics, emphasis on contrasts, and its extensive array of details give it an identity that is uniquely its own. It portrays a sense of legendary fantasy to the viewer, one pertaining to hostility, violence, and pure anger. The sculpture seems overly shallow due to
Essay Topic 4: Augustus made significant urban and architectural interventions on the city of Rome. Choose three buildings/monuments related to his reign and discuss how they reflect his impact. What representational messages were they designed to convey?
I think about how the world had betrayed this women. They made this woman plump and empty, she does not even have a face. This statue is nude showing everything to the naked eye, she does not have a desirable body. This sculpture shows how much a woman was respected back in the day, which was very little.
Concerning color, there is a stark contrast between the figure on the painting and the background. More specifically, the figure of the woman is predominantly delineated in white color, especially pale, ashen white, as far her apparel and facial complexion are concerned, while there are also various hues of grey, with respect to her hair and accessory feather. These white and grey shades are vividly contrasted with the prevailing red and crimson hues of the background (viz. the drape, armchair, and table). Moreover, one can detect colors of dark green (jewelry), some beige on the left (pillar), and darker or lighter shades of blue on the right side of the canvas (sky), which all in concert and in addition to the subtle purple hue forming the sun or moon exude a certain dramatic sentiment. Also, there is brown, which often easily segues into gold (viz. books and attire details respectively). The main contrast of colors between white and red would be interpreted as serving the purpose of rendering the figure of the woman, and especially her face, the focal point of the work, despite, paradoxically enough, the lush red shades at the background. Bearing that in mind, the significance of the woman’s face will be enlarged upon later, when discussing aspects of her identity.
This sculpture is located now in the ¨Museo Nazionale di Villa Giulia¨ in Rome. The funerary architecture and focused on the commemoration of the deceased and of his race, not holding to the afterlife, to the Etruscans, after the dreaded death, was a state of pain and despair. The tombs reproduce the structure of the houses, where already the characteristic distribution of the Latins, with differentiation of atrium, or central space tablinum or lead agency, and stays arranged around them is
Known as the fallen angel, the devil could very easily be the representative this sculpture, due to the broken leg and missing wing, appearing to have come from a traumatic event, such as a large fall. The wall suggests a banishment, as he will never be able to cross it, possibly meaning the Devil’s inability to return to heaven. There are trees framing the sculpture and plants placed around it like a garden. The garden area is a representation of the Garden of Eden where the devil convinced Eve to take the forbidden fruit. Since the fruit came from the tree of knowledge, it is fitting that the sculpture be flanked trees. It also gives meaning to the choice to place the sculpture by the library, which is a center of knowledge for the entire
This sculpture is of a women breast feeding her child. The face of the two people is elongated, as well as the breasts of the mother. This is common to all African Art because they wanted representation of what is being expressed. In this particular sculpture, a supernatural power is being called upon. The power has been asked to protect the mother and child, and to
Despite the grotesque and shocking appearance of the creature, the boy shows no fear, or malice generally associated with other species, he is only calm and affectionate in the creature’s appearance. Pinccinini has described this work as a visual representation of empathy, “she looks different, but she is still beautiful.” The familial relationship shown in this sculpture emphasises our compassionate for this other-worldly creature, humanising her. Piccinini is endorsing the study of genetics with this work, there has been much debate about how far genetics can go in the future, how we will soon lose how humanity within our enhancement. This work is used to displace this fear, it is shouting through the loving posing, that no matter how far we go, we will always be fundamentally
From my observation at the Met, this sculpture is inside a medium glass and space. Also, it is by itself in the glass. It is a three-dimensional sculpture created by modeling and merging hard materials. Next to it there are other deities (Vishnu, Parvati, Ganesh etc.) and sculptors from the Chola Dynasty. The other works near it complements the sculpture as I have stated above they are from the same time period so, they are related to each other some way and
