Heroes come and go in everyone’s life. They can range anywhere from your parents, a famous sports star, actors, etc. We all need someone to look up to for guidance to show us how to live our life, what to do and how we should act; Beowulf demonstrates all three of those few characteristics of a hero. Everything that I look for in a leader is demonstrated by Beowulf throughout the book. He willingly leads his troops into unknown land without being asked or called upon and fights off a beast that had been torturing the people for years. When he was in combat, there was no backing down; he was at the front of line to fight and lead his troops to victory after victory until there was no one else willing to fight him and his troops. By making the alliance with the Danes, Beowulf was able to gain a friendship, riches and more. Giving his hard earned riches back to his kingdom is just another way he exemplifies leadership qualities. There are many ways Beowulf exemplifies what it means to be a leader but the …show more content…
Bravery is probably the hardest trait a leader can possess because it’s not something that you can be taught, it’s something that you’re born with and only a few are able to show this bravery through their leadership. Again, in his fight with both Grendel and Grendel’s mother, Beowulf demonstrates another leadership quality; bravery. First off, even fighting them both is brave beyond comprehension, yet along fighting Grendel with no weapon! After defeating Grendel, he then has to march into the swamp of an angry mother who had just killed his friend and fight a creature even scarier than Grendel. Also, even in his old age when he had been ruling his kingdom for 50 years, Beowulf still decides to fight a fire breathing dragon. Despite it not ending quite so picture perfect, his bravery rubs off onto Wiglaf as well as his other leadership qualities and Wiglaf ends up defeating the dragon and winning the
Loyalty and bravery are themes that are often found in literature, and Beowulf is no exception. It is one of the reasons I find this poem so interesting. Beowulf is the hero of the poem who decides to sail to Denmark with hope of protecting the Danish people from a creature known as Grendel, who has attacked and devoured many of King Hrothgar’s warriors while they were asleep. Like all heroes, Beowulf exhibits true bravery, courage, and puts the people before himself, which makes him a very likely candidate for king. Even before he faces the terrifying monster, Grendel, Beowulf renounces the uses of weapons when he says “Soon I shall sink him into death-sleep, not with my sword but solely by strength. He is unschooled in skills to strike against
Beowulf has confidence when he battles. Beowulf announces that he will fight Grendel, the evil that has been lurking them for a long time. However; Beowulf says he will fight with his bare hands instead of using weapons (Lines 400-490). This shows how he is brave enough to challenge Grendel with a single combat with only hands and in the end, he wins. Another example is when Beowulf boasts, Unferth interrupts him and insults him. Then Beowulf replies, “The fact is, Unferth, if you were truly as keen and courageous as you claim to be Grendel would never have got away with such unchecked atrocity, attacks on your king, havoc in Heorot and horrors everywhere” (590-595). This is an example of where he shows courage because he corrects Unferth and makes him look as a fool for not stating the truth of what actually happened. Also, this explains while they were swimming he was fighting off sea creatures along their swim, which is why he lost. According to Heaney, Beowulf shows courage when he believes he can defeat the dragon. During when Beowulf fights the dragon, it states, “Yet the prince of the rings was too proud to line up with a large army against the sky-plague. He had scant regard for the dragon as a threat, no dread at all its courage and strength, for he had kept going often in the past, through perils and ordeals of every
Theme is the matter of a subject within a piece of writing. Throughout this essay examples of mesopotamian literature, old english poetry and ancient greek literature are brought up. The central theme throughout all these epics is bravery. I chose bravery because each one of these characters risks their lives to save others. The ability to take on life threatening battles is an extreme form of bravery.
The first battle shows Beowulf’s bravery by challenging the great beast in a battle with his bare hands. He showed no fear and arrogance that was soon backed up by his might. From the very beginning Beowulf showed a lot of pride in the strength he possessed which luckly was no laughing matter. He maneged to kill Grendel, a furosious monster who has slayen many men, by ripping of his arm and causing him to bleed to death. It wasn’t a direct kill but the people sure took it as it. He was recognized as someone worthy to rule them and was praised for this. His victory with Grendel earned him his arm. His trophy was Grendel’s arm, showing how mighty he was to rip the arm of a vicious creature bare handed with no armor. Grendel with his arm ripped off he retreats back to his mother, where his life is on the line as he bleeds to death.
Bravery. Strength. Sense of justice. Heroes in Anglo-Saxon literature show these characteristics and more. Furthermore, Beowulf, the son of Ecgtheow and one of the strongest and bravest person known to man wanted to take down every evil thing that was around him or aggravating him that he had to step up and fight them. In the epic poem, Beowulf exemplifies the Anglo-Saxon Hero characteristics of bravery and courage, sense of justice, and strength.
Beowulf is a prime example of what it means to be courageous. In his fight with Grendel, he chooses “[n]o weapons, therefore, / for either this night: unarmed he shall face me / if face me he dares” (683-84). Beowulf has never encountered Grendel before. He has only heard the stories of the beast’s evil doings, so going into a fight with no protection requires great strength and bravery. Beowulf is the only man to dive into the waters to fight Grendel’s Mother. He goes into the fight believing “life doesn’t cost him a thought” (1536). The outcome of the battle does not faze Beowulf because a warrior should
The epic Beowulf portrays the life of a well-known hero during the Anglo-Saxon period. Beowulf is known by many as the strong warrior who volunteered to protect the Danes. The Danes needed a fearless hero to save them after the catastrophe of losing the infamous Herot to Grendel, a descendent of Cain. In the story, it is made obvious that Beowulf is the “good” and Grendel is the “bad”. I consider my mom to be a Beowulf in my life because she shares the same three characteristics as Beowulf: courage, bravery and faith in God. When I think of the word courage, the line that comes to mind is "Often, for undaunted courage, fate spares the man it has not already marked.". (Beowulf, 572 - 573) In this line, Beowulf explains that if your fate has not been decided, then you have the ability to choose your own fate by having courage.
Beowulf is a hero in the eyes of his fellow men through his amazing physical strength. He fought in numerous battles and returned victorious
Beowulf, an epic poem, was written by an anonymous author who described the Anglo-Saxon era. During this era, Anglo-Saxon heroes were classified as courageous, generous and faithful. In the poem, the character Beowulf is classified as an Anglo-Saxon hero. People of the Anglo-Saxon era spoke what is now known as Old English.
Beowulf Beowulf is an epic poem about a man who took on many challenges during the Anglo- Saxon period. The Anglo- Saxons helped create Old English, and they created this epic poem called Beowulf. In the epic poem of Beowulf, Beowulf is a mix of a folk story and Christian traditions by faith, loyalty and courage. Beowulf is a Christian and folk story by his loyalty. Beowulf is the king of the Geats (Beowulf’s clan) and when the king of the Danes, Hrothgar, asked for help, Beowulf “would sail across the sea to Hrothgar …
Although boasting and bravery are strong qualities, you also need to have a little bit of a warm heart to be a hero. Beowulf is selfless, a important word to signify that he would do anything to protect others. The first quote to show of Beowulf’s selflessness is, “I mean to stand, not run from his shooting Flames, stand till fate decides Which of us wins.” (638-639). This means that Beowulf is standing his ground until fate takes its course, which is selfless because he is giving his life up if that is what fate decides in order to rid of the dragon. Another notable text from the book is, “A prince of the Geats, had killed Grendel. Ended the grief, the sorrow, the suffering forced on Hrothgar's helpless people by a bloodthirsty fiend. No Dance doubted the Victory.” (404-408). It can clearly be inferred that the people of the land were in ‘grief’, ‘sorrow’ and were ‘suffering’ because of Grendel. But, because Beowulf defeated him that grief and sorrow has been eased. Beowulf wants fame and fortune, but to also help the people who need it.
Bravery is a big aspect in the book, “Beowulf” which allowed me to reflect on times I have been brave or could have been. As a kid you found it brave to walk into a room that was dark but as I have grown up, it has become harder to find scenarios to be brave. Spots is a big part of my life. Whenever we would face a good team in football or I knew I would have to wrestle someone who was considered superior to me I would usually have some type of fear or discomfort.
Beowulf first displays his courage during his fight with the evil monster Grendel. In the poem, Beowulf challenges the beast to duel and says that he will fight him with no weapons and armor to show his courage. “No weapons, therefore,/ for either this night: unarmed he shall face me if face me he dares” (Heaney 683-685). This shows how much courage Beowulf has because he is fighting a descendent from Cain and is taking him on without any weapons and armor. Secondly, Beowulf does not hesitate for one second and takes on the beast without any help, this shows how courages the hero is.
Beowulf’s virtues of courage and strength appear throughout the poem during his life as a warrior and as a king. He begins the story with courage and “the strength of thirty / in the grip of each hand” (380-381), which are vital to his accomplishments as a warrior. His courage and strength are apparent when he fights Grendel without the use of weapons. Both virtues are crucial to his success in that battle and lead him to become a leader of wisdom and stature. As king of Heorot he uses his courage and strength in the battle against the dragon. Before the fight he has a feeling of uncertainty and it is stated “He was sad at heart / unsettled yet ready, sensing his death. / His fate hovered near, unknowing but certain: / It would soon claim his coffered soul.” (2419-2424). His sense of forthcoming death may illustrates a lack of confidence in his ability to slay the dragon; however, it also shows tremendous courage by involving himself in an unevenly matched fight. Although his physical strength may have abandoned him in his last fight against the dragon, his courage and wisdom intensified his glory beyond his death.
Beowulf is a hero, and we all know a hero when we see one. There are many traits and characteristics that make someone a hero. These traits and characteristics are more expressed in ancient epics and poems. Beowulf is one of the most famous ancient Anglo-Saxon poems still taught to this day in schools and colleges all over the world. The story starts off of how a man by the name of Beowulf receives news that a neighboring land is being terrorized by a monster named Grendel. Beowulf shows several characteristics of here such as, bravery, loyalty, generosity, friendship, and showing a high level of intellect. Beowulf first shows his heroic character through his bravery while journeying on his epic quest. There are several cases where he is not afraid, and instead of being frightened, he shows great bravery. An example of from the poem is, “Instead, they inspected omens and spurred his ambitions to go, whilst he moved about like the leader he was, enlisting men, the best he could find; with fourteen others the warrior boarded the boast as captain” (Beowulf 205-210). This quote gives proof of his bravery because he was the head of the group leading his men. Beowulf proves that even he himself must be brave in order to lead the bravest of men into battle.
