Merriam Webster defines the word “dated” as “coming from or belonging to a time in the past.” By that definition, any movie not released within the past year can be considered as such. It is my belief that movies are only dated when viewed out of context; when they are taken into consideration without realizing that they were created and produced in a completely different time period than the one in which they are being viewed. Additionally, the movies themselves may seem dated due to less advanced technologies and different ways of living, but the themes that compose the movies remain timeless despite the era it was created in.
Take The Breakfast Club for example. If someone were to watch the film in the context of present day it would be considered dated for lack of cell phones, the internet, differences of fashion and ways of living in the eras. But if it were seen in the context of the mid-eighties, the movie would not seem dated because it would be understood that that was the way of life at the time. In The Breakfast Club, the main theme is pressure and how it affects everyday life, from peer pressure to be popular at school, to parental pressure at home to be the best. This theme resounds with the generation of today which leads this film to be considered timeless because it is still relatable and relevant. Another heavy theme in this movie is rebellion against authority. Teenage rebellion has been a substantial theme ever since the end of the era of conformity in the 1950s, to its prime in the 1960s and 70s, and into today where it continues heavily, which helps this film remain current despite being thirty years old.
