Mammary glands are activated by hormones in puberty. They consist of 15 to 24 lobes when a woman reaches the age of 35 the mammary glands gradually shrink making the milk ducts also shrink. The breasts change during a normal menstrual cycle, fluctuating hormones are the cause of this. Tenderness and swelling are due to hormones rising and falling. The breast ducts of women enlarge because of oestrogen. A woman’s breasts feel sore due to the milk glands swelling because of the production of progesterone. When a woman has stopped having her menstrual cycle. Hormone levels drop making the breast tissues less fatty and dense.
Pregnancy is a time where a women’s breasts are rapidly changing and transforming because of the glands that produce milk increase due to prolactin (a hormone which triggers the production of milk) for her upcoming childbearing years. An increase oestrogen and progesterone hormones also cause changes to occur. The size of the breast is increasing while pregnant this is due to the breast tissue spreading into the armpit. But in the last few weeks of pregnancy, the breasts expand because of the increase in the size of the milk-producing cells. After childbirth, the levels of hormones oestrogen and progesterone decrease very rapidly. This then leads to normal breast cell growth and replacement.

Over the past decade breast cancer has become one of the most predominant diseases in the United States. Breast cancer starts out as a malignant tumor in the tissues of the breast which is formed from the uncontrolled growth of abnormal breast cells. Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women, but it can also appear in men. (Stephan, 2010)
According to the United States Breast Cancer Statistics (2016), in 2016 there will be an estimated 246,660 newly diagnosed cases of invasive breast cancer and 61,000 of non-invasive breast cancer among women. For this reason, when studying breast cancer based on a large-scale impact, it not only affects the patient themselves but, as well as their families and communities nationwide. Furthermore, many contributing factors lead to this being such a public health issue. Conclusively, there are specific programs, services, and policies that help to assist the contributing factors of such a public health threat. Nevertheless, breast cancer is still an increasing concern in society, and much-needed research is required to be able to detect and treat this disease.

Unfortunately, as most of us know cancer is one of the deadliest diseases in our society. Breast Cancer is the second leading cause of death in women in the United States, next to lung cancer and also the most common cancer diagnosed in women. Over one million people are diagnosed with cancer every year in the U.S. alone. As many people are aware of today, due to uncontrolled growth of cells within in the body, cancer is developed through this. During class Dr. Weilert asked us whether we knew anyone that had cancer, suffered with some form of cancer or are now in remission. I was shocked to see that about 80% of the class did know someone. Since there has been an ongoing investigation and ongoing research for the cure of cancer, it is now known that there are over one hundred different types of cancer. In this paper I will discuss; the natural history, pathophysiology, the signs & symptoms, the diagnoses and finally share some statistics surrounding breast cancer within the United States.

One out of every eight women in the US is diagnosed with breast cancer every year. When women get older, their chances of developing breast cancer increases. In fact, 80% of all breast cancer patients are women ages fifty and up. As the number of breast cancer patients increases year after year, identification methods and treatments are beginning to advance. Doctors and pathologists are using the highest levels of technology to treat abnormalities inside of the body. The tumor is discovered through either mammography or self-breast examinations. Through these methods, doctors are able to discover the tumor and decide on what treatment is right for each patient. When it comes to treating breast cancer, there are multiple treatment options; the type and severity of the cancer help the doctor decide the optimal treatment plan for each patient.

According to the American Cancer Society, Each year, more than 200,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer; furthermore Twelve percent of all women will contract the disease, and 3.5% of them will die from breast cancer (American Cancer Society, 2005). There are risk factors that may lead to breast cancer. There are 4 stages of breast cancer and several treatments, although treatments vary from types and stages of breast cancer. Breast cancer is the leading cause of death among women who are 40 to 55 years old (Breast Cancer, 2009).Cancer occurs when cells divide uncontrollably. It changes from a normal cell to cancerous cells that require gene alterations. Therefore the altered genes and the uncontrolled growth may lead to tumors.
Hormones are the building blocks of life. Without them, you can’t create new lives. However, hormones are starting to cause people to worry. Breast development is on the rise. Girls, on average, are beginning to mature and grow breasts at the age of nine, which causes one to raise suspicion considering how the average in the 1960’s was around age 11 (Steingraber 746). Early breast development can be linked to breast cancer later on in life.
