Brian Robeson is a thirteen-year-old son of divorced parents. As he travels on a Cessna 406 bush plane to visit his father in the oil fields in northern Canada for the summer, the pilot suffers a massive heart attack and dies. Brian tries to land the plane, but ends up crash-landing into a lake in the forest. He must learn to survive on his own with nothing but his hatchet—a gift his mother gave him shortly before his plane departed.[2] Thirteen-year old Brian Robeson, the sole passenger on a small plane from Hampton, New York to the north woods of Canada, boards the aircraft excited at the notion of flying in a single-engine plane. After the novelty of the experience passes, Brian returns to his thoughts of his parents' recent divorce. Brian …show more content…
He alternates between rabbits and foolbirds, so he is able to satisfy himself with sufficient meat. In time he perfects his skills at catching foolbirds, once even catching a bird with his bare hands. While washing his hands in the lake, he senses something and turns around just in time to face a huge moose. The moose attacks him, throwing him into the water, thrashing him around, and badly hurting his ribs and his shoulder. Retrieving his bow, spear, and foolbird from the water's edge, Brian, in enormous pain, attempts to make sense of the attack before falling asleep. A far-off roar awakens Brian in the middle of the night. Suddenly, a tornado pounds down on him, slamming him on the side of the shelter. The tornado departs as quickly as it had arrived, leaving Brian out in the open, his shelter and fire obliterated. Without the protection of the fire, mosquitoes find him once again and he lies sleepless for the remainder of the night, contemplating how his situation has changed so drastically in one day. In the aftermath of the moose attack and the tornado he has little left. Nonetheless, Brian remains unfazed in his resolve to rebuild using the hatchet, his only remaining
It was a book that is a “what if” story based on Gary Paulsen’s other book “The Hatchet.” I liked how he included all things that can happen in the woods. The author also told how cold it got in the winter. The story was so good that I had a hard time putting the book down. There was also one part that sublimity saying that Brian was missing home. It was when Brian was eating his thanksgiving ribs and he was craving a coke and some barbecue sauce. It was in that instance that he was missing home. I also liked how the author described the emotion of not wanting to leave. Brian became so attached to his environment he got
He then tries repeatedly to create fire. He eventually does succeed in making fire. He later finds turtle eggs and hesitantly eats them. Later, a plane flies over Brian, but never notices him and Brian loses all hope. He attempts to commit suicide, but ends up surviving the attempt. Brian makes a bow and some arrows and catches a fish. Later that night a skunk enters his shelter and tries to steal his food. He yells at it and it sprays him, leaving him temporarily blinded. He perfects his tools and catches a bird. While he is cleaning the bird in the lake, a moose attacks Brian. In the attack, his ribs and his shoulder were
When they crashed, Brian couldn’t be lazy like he was in the city. He had to use his wits and knowledge that he knew about the woods. He needed to learn how to cook, make fire, hunt, make tools, and build a
Have you ever been stranded in the middle of nowhere with no humanity for miles? In the book, Hatchet, the main character has crash landed in the Canadian wilderness. He survives for 54 days in the woods. He had some ups and downs, but he learned from his mistakes. During his survival in the woods, he found out how to hunt fool birds and he learned that his hatchet ,his mother gave him, could tear through the aluminum plane.
Brian's thoughts are significant because we can see that the Hatchet is what keeps him carrying on and not giving up. The hatchet was a sign of protection and it is significant because it is the thing that gives him a sense of protection. The bear had put a little fear into Brian though “he thought of the bear, thought of thought of Bigfoot and every monster he had ever seen in every fright movies he had ever watched and his heart hammered in his throat” (Paulsen 30). The reader can see that Brian is scared because he is all alone in the pitch black wilderness with animals and other creatures around him.
As they flew over the Canadian Wilderness, the worst thing that could possibly happen to the pilot, happened. “He stopped as a fresh spasm of pain hit him. Even Brian could see how bad it was--the pain drove the pilot back into the seat, back and down.” (page 10). This was the start of the symptoms for a heart attack, the pilot was having a heart attack. All Brian knew about the plane he was in was a brief lesson from the pilot and what he had read in books. “He was flying but did not where, had no idea where he was going. He looked at the dashboard of the plane, studied the dials and hoped to get some help, hoped to find a compass, but it was all so confusing, a jumble of numbers and lights.” (page 16). Once he had the plane in control, he had to use his knowledge to land. As a result of the heart attack, this was the start of the longest 54 days of his life, he was all alone
Brian Robeson is a dynamic character because he changes. One is that Brian went from heartbroken to a pro survivalist. Then Brian went from wasn´t a good listener to a excellent listener.Brian loss 17% body fat and he dosen´t speak much.Brian also had a hatchet with him though out the whole story.
Brian Robeson, a 13 year old, was just flying over to his Dad’s house when the pilot who he had been sitting next to had a heart attack. He tried to take control of the plane. Luckily, the pilot taught him a little bit on how to fly the plane before he had a heart attack. Brian knew that the plane was going to crash, so he tried to ease it up a little. When he crashed, he realized that he was hundreds of miles away from his mother and where he was supposed to be. He built a shelter and found some berries that he called gut cherries. He gets struck by a tornado and then all of the things he gathered was gone. When he tries to get supplies from the half-sunken airplane in a lagoon near his shelter, his hatchet drops into the lagoon. He goes down
Thomas More was a great saint because of his trust in God and because of the virtues he developed.
Tomorrow maybe the fish would be back and he would make a spear and new bow and get some food. Tomorrow he would find food and refine the camp and bring things back to sanity from the one completely insane day” The quote clearly shows growth in Brian, it shows how he has grown strength, even after everything that he had was destroyed he was still willing to get back up on his feet, with a positive attitude, he was not just going to give up. This is very different from the Brian from the beginning of the book. That Brian would have cried, and given up as soon as the tornado hit. But now, Brian has learned from his mistakes.
I chose Brian (the brain) to do my character analysis on. In my opinion Brian was a stud the principal would never have expected Brian to be the one carrying the pot for the criminal. Brian was really funny when he was smoking the pot he had a funny voice. The funniest thing about Brian was that he brought a flair gun to school and it went off in his locker.
While flight remains conspicuously absent throughout Milkman's childhood, it frequently reoccurs when he is on his quest to rediscover his past. Milkman's first act of flying is an airplane ride to an old town where his father's family once resided; it is his flight to finding himself. "The airplane ride exhilarated him, encouraged illusion and a feeling of invulnerability. High above the clouds, heavy yet light, caught in the stillness of speed" (Morrison 220). Milkman feels immune to all the mistakes of his past, as though they could not have ever existed. "In the air, away from real life, he felt free, but on the ground, when he talked to Guitar just before he left, the wings of all those other people's nightmares flapped in his face and constrained him" (Morrison 220). Milkman searches for freedom from his past mistakes, from the baggage of the people in his life, and from the expectations of his father. This first flight on an airplane grants Milkman the feeling of freedom he has searched for all his life, at least for the short amount of time he remains in the air in the "intricate metal become glistening bird" (Morrison 220). He gains a taste of the freedom towards which he strives, and this momentary bliss helps him to realize the
He uses the shelter to protect him from the rain and some animals. After he builds the shelter, Brian uses his hatchet to make spears and arrows. He takes branches and sharpens the tip of them to make arrows and spears. "He had worked on the fish spear until it had become more then just a tool. He shoots the arrows at birds and throws the spears at fish. "I know about fire; I know I need fire." Brian says this the second night he's there. Brian needs a fire because he needs it for heat, to cook food and to keep animals away. Brian makes the fire with his hatchet and a rock. First, he figures out that he needs some paper so he takes his 20-dollar bill and tries to burn it. Unfortunately, the bill just burns right out and leaves him with no fire. After that, he takes his hatchet and cuts small pieces of bark. Then he piles them up under twigs. Then he takes his hatchet and hits a rock with a great blow and sparks catch the bark on fire. He hits another blow and the sparks catch the twigs on fire. Therefore, he has a fire. This process shows that whatever Brian sets his mind to he can do it. About two months later Brian went to the bottom of the lake to see if there was anything useful in the plane. He brought up a survival package. There were many useful things in there like bandages and matches. Couple months later, just before winter was going to hit a man shows up in a plane. The guy in the plane was the man Brian had talked
This essay discusses the life of a young boy that is very observant and takes initiative in order to survive. The main characters in this story besides Brian and his mother are the pilot Jim or Jake who was very quiet, Terry who was Brian’s best friend, Mr. Perpich a motivational teacher, and Uncle Carter who had some of the greatest outdoor survival skills. The story takes place at the in Canada’s wilderness and the Amber mall. The central theme begins as Brian’s mother drops him off at the airport to take a journey to see his father. In addition, Brian does not know this journey will soon become a life lesson for the rest of his life.
Brian originally found gut cherries which made him feel sick. So right after he ate that he went searching for some different berries and ends up finding raspberries. Before Brian got ready to find berries Brian was getting firmly like on page 60-61 “Simple keep it simple I am Brian Robeson I have been in a plane crash. I am going to find food. I am going to find berries.” later on Brian developed his skills and caught fish and hunted fool birds and bunnies. Like he called his first hunt on page 141 “first meat”. This is showing how Brian needs to keep his head in the game because if Brian didn’t find food, he would either be really hungry until help comes or he dies of starvation. So Brian was proactive and put his head in the game so he can survive.
