History: The Z. virus was first seen in a monkey in 1947. It wasn’t until a year later in 1958 that the mosquitoes were known to be host. The first case reported for Zika found in humans was in 1954, by a 10-year old Nigeran girl. Virulence factors of the causative agent: …show more content…

The lack of effective mosquito control is a big part into the spread of Z. virus. The increased amount of traveling plays a role in the spread as well. Mode of transmission: Zika is primarily transmitted by arthropod transmission. The bite of an infected Ades mosquito is what causes the disease. Mosquitoes also lay eggs in or near standing water such as buckets, bowls, and flower pots. Mosquitoes can get the Z. virus from humans by feeding on an infected person. Mosquitoes are not the only way to contract the Z. virus. Pregnant mothers can transfer the virus during pregnancy and during birth. Although Zika is transferred to the child by the mother during pregnancy or birth, studies do not show that to be the same for breastfeeding. A person can also contract the zika virus from anal, oral, intercourse, or sharing sex toys with an infected person. The CDC has stated that a person can become infected by a person who’s already infected before, during, and after their symptoms have occurred. The transmission however is not a skin to skin contact, direct contact unless it is sexual. Blood …show more content…

virus is by avoiding mosquito bites, wearing protective clothing, proper use of EPA-registered mosquito repellent containing: DEET, IR3535, or Icarian (according to the CDC), and mosquito nets for the people who rest during the day. If a person is caring for someone with the Z. virus they should use precaution with any bodily fluids. They should wash their hands immediately after caring for the infected person. If bodily fluids appear on the clothes of a non-infected person they should immediately remove their clothes and wash them according to the material. Bleaching clothes are not necessary. If bodily fluids are found on any surface, clean and sterilize the area accordingly. Mosquito control and sex education could help raise the awareness of the spread. For infected people who have sex with non-infected people, condoms and dental dams can lower the risk of the disease sexually.
