On the night of April 20, 2010, British Petroleum’s (BP) Deepwater Horizon oil rig, located 45 miles off the coast of Venice, Louisiana, in the Gulf of Mexico exploded and caught fire, resulting in the deaths of eleven workers and others injured. The rig sank on the morning of April 22nd, and on April 23rd crews discovered oil leaking from the well’s rise and drill pipe. An estimated 206 million gallons of oil flooded into the Gulf of Mexico. More than 8,000 birds, sea turtles, and marine mammals were found injured or dead in the result of the oil spill (BP).

After the spill in 2011 hundreds of stillborn baby dolphins were born, their mothers were in their first trimester during the oil spill. The oil spill caused an unbalance in the food chain, many species lost eggs and larvae due to the spill, this has caused a decrease in fish and wildlife population which causes a chain reaction of commercial fishing to be affected because they lose out and it overall affects the local economies (nwf). Corexit is more dangerous than the oil itself and being mixed together was extremely harmful to humans and wildlife. Being exposed to the mixture severely damages the human skin and eats through it and can also be breathed in. Some of the issues COREXIT causes to humans: respiratory problems, coughing, skin rashes/burning/blisters, central nervous system breakdown, headaches, nausea, and more. Soon after BP started spraying COREXIT through planes and on the beaches, thousands of people were affected with severe health problems, including volunteers who helped clean up the beaches. BP and Nalco, the creator of Corexit, insisted that the products are no more dangerous than common household cleaners such as dish soap. (mj). Eventually as the EPA and the local public made an outcry of this toxic chemical to stop being used, BP claimed they would use their use of it. Unfortunately, they secretly kept using Corexit at night as they kept the beaches closed off to the public. Even into 2012 BP was still used Corexit over the Gulf coast.
