In Broward County, Florida there are an estimated 812,565 housing units and 48.1% of those housing units are multi-unit structures (U.S Census Bureau, 2014, p. 1). Currently, the county’s 31 cities and unincorporated areas of the county have implemented recycling programs that provide single stream recycling to single-family homes. Broward County cities provide single-family home residents a recycling container at no additional cost, for use in single stream recycling, in which recyclable items are all placed together in one container. These containers are placed curbside and are collected once a week. Residents are encouraged to recycle the following items; newspapers, inserts, catalogs, magazines, junk mail, office paper, soft covered books, file folders, cartons, crushed boxes, plastic containers, cardboard and aluminum, steel and tin food and beverage containers. …show more content…
The act mandated waste minimization, conservation of landfill space, litter control and recycling. A major provision in the act required all counties to initiate recycling programs to separate and offer for recycling a majority of aluminum cans, glass, newspaper and plastic bottles (Dockery, 2005, p. 1). Currently, Broward County and its cities are falling short of their true recycling potential and reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by not automatically including multi-family structures, such as condos, apartment building and townhouses, in their respective recycling programs. Expanding the county and city recycling programs to include multi-family dwellings would expand the program’s reach to an additional 390,843 multi-family
The current recycling program in Vermilion Parish, Louisiana is insufficient to meet the needs of the community. Many urban populations are taking advantage of technological innovations to maximize the effectiveness of recycling programs. One issue in Vermilion Parish is that there is an insufficient number of locations in which recyclables can be dropped off. Thus, even though the recycling industry in Vermilion Parish is well-established, the availability and feasibility for recycling opportunities is quite low to much of the population. The result is that the recycling program is relatively inefficient in Vermilion Parish. With an annual population growth of around 2% (Prakken & White, 2014), the need for increased recycling

Developing and implementing strategies that can secure adequate water for both people and the environment is one of the most important missions of the water management districts in Florida. To fulfill their missions, the water management districts develop water supply plans to help provide adequate and sustainable water supplies to meet future needs while protecting the environment. One of the more important tools used in the planning process is a regional groundwater model.

Nassau County, Long Island is a suburban county, completely surrounded by two bodies of water, the Atlantic Ocean and the Long Island Sound. Our four season climate with humid summers and snowy winters is due to the fact that we are a coastal area. Up until the late 1940s, when there was an influx of people who relocated from New York City Nassau County mainly consisted of farmland. By the 1950s, numerous young adults had come to settle down here essentially because the houses were affordable, schools were top notch and it was just a wonderful place to live and raise a family. Many family owned businesses still remained at that time, although in recent years chain stores increasingly opened and forced these family owned businesses to close.
It is estimated that 22 million Americans in 2005 struggled with drug or alcohol related problems. Among the 22 million, 95 percent who were involved with substance abuse problems were observed to be unaware of their problems. An estimated 273,000 individuals realized they had a problem and made an unsuccessful effort to obtain treatment. The above-mentioned estimates reflect the severity/importance of increasing prevention efforts and improving access to treatment for substance abuse and co-occurring disorders1.
Sarasota County, Florida is located on the west coast of the Florida peninsula (Fig. 3) and has approximately 35 miles of shoreline and a low average elevation (~42 ft.). These physical characteristics make the county susceptible to coastal hazard inundation impacts, such as inland precipitation flooding and storm surge inundation, with ~45% of the county falling within the 100-year floodplain (Sarasota County 2015; Sarasota County and Commissioners 2016). The county has also experienced significant population growth within the last decade, experiencing approximately 16% population increase from 2000 to 2010 (Bureau 2010) and is highly developed along the coast due to the Urban Service Area (USA) delineation. The USA describes the general area
This week’s assignment was to search out the schedule for any local city council or county commission public meeting and attend either in person or online to observe the deliberations. This observation paper is of the Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) for Broward County. The meeting was held on March 28, 2017 at 10:08 a.m. The Broward County Charter requires a division among the legislative and administrative functions of government and the BOCC is the legislative branch of the county government (Borward.org. 2017. para. 1). The BOCC consists of nine members who are elected by district in partisan elections and each Commissioner is a resident of the distract for which he or she seeks election (Broward.org. 2017. para. 2). Each November,
How equitable was the decision made by the county manager to propose a 4% electric utility tax on residents of the unincorporated area?
Just looking at local cities, the lack of recycling effort resident shows impacts drastically around the world. Imagine these local cities, plus thousands/millions more around the world, refusing on doing an ecological act of recycling and reusing materials. These acts might not look bad for one person, but if you sum all the people doing it around the world, it adds up to an enormous number. A lot of those people doing all those filthy acts often believe that global warming is fake and that if they don’t dispose an item properly, they assume that nothing will happen to the ecosystem. Also, the people around the world don’t see the bigger picture that by having a large home/mansion is slowly killing the environment. Why? Because the larger the house the more wood is required to build it, and use more quantity of other products that are not appropriate for the environment.
