In Broward County, Florida there are an estimated 812,565 housing units and 48.1% of those housing units are multi-unit structures (U.S Census Bureau, 2014, p. 1). Currently, the county’s 31 cities and unincorporated areas of the county have implemented recycling programs that provide single stream recycling to single-family homes. Broward County cities provide single-family home residents a recycling container at no additional cost, for use in single stream recycling, in which recyclable items are all placed together in one container. These containers are placed curbside and are collected once a week. Residents are encouraged to recycle the following items; newspapers, inserts, catalogs, magazines, junk mail, office paper, soft covered books, file folders, cartons, crushed boxes, plastic containers, cardboard and aluminum, steel and tin food and beverage containers. …show more content…

The act mandated waste minimization, conservation of landfill space, litter control and recycling. A major provision in the act required all counties to initiate recycling programs to separate and offer for recycling a majority of aluminum cans, glass, newspaper and plastic bottles (Dockery, 2005, p. 1). Currently, Broward County and its cities are falling short of their true recycling potential and reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by not automatically including multi-family structures, such as condos, apartment building and townhouses, in their respective recycling programs.
