New research shows that people with blue eyes have a single, common ancestor. A team at the University of Copenhagen have tracked down a genetic mutation which took place 6-10,000 years ago and is the cause of the eye colour of all blue-eyed humans alive on the planet today.
What is the genetic mutation
"Originally, we all had brown eyes," said Professor Hans Eiberg from the Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine. "But a genetic mutation affecting the OCA2 gene in our chromosomes resulted in the creation of a "switch," which literally "turned off" the ability to produce brown eyes." The OCA2 gene codes for the so-called P protein, which is involved in the production of melanin, the pigment that gives colour to our hair, eyes and skin.

"From this we can close that all blue-eyed people are linked to the same ancestor," says Professor Eiberg. "They have all inherited the same switch at exactly the same spot in their DNA." Brown-eyed people, by contrast, have much personal variation in their DNA that controls melanin production.
Professor Eiberg and his team examined mitochondrial DNA and compared the eye colour of blue-eyed people in countries as diverse as Jordan, Denmark and Turkey. His findings are the latest in a decade of genetic research, which began in 1996, when Professor Eiberg first implicated the OCA2 gene as being responsible for eye colour.
Nature shuffles our genes
The mutation of brown eyes to blue represents neither a positive nor a negative mutation. It is one of several mutations such as hair colour, baldness, freckles and beauty spots, which neither increases nor reduces a human's chance of survival. As Professor Eiberg says, "it simply shows that nature is constantly shuffling the human genome, creating a genetic cocktail of human chromosomes and trying out different changes as it does
Introduction: The gene that codes for red-green color blindness, the most common form of color blindness in humans, is found on the X chromosome. One in 12 males is color blind. In females, however, color blindness affects only about 1 in 200. Why is
A mutation in the cinnabar gene, which causes the ocelli to become colorless and the eyes to become a bright red color, was originally discovered by Roy Clausen, a professor at the University of California in 1918. The cinnabar gene is a protein coder gene which controls how the
First off, people with blue eyes were considered “superior” to the brown-eyed people. When they were separated by eye color, there were often times were the blue-eyed people would make fun of the brown-eyed people. Due to the separation, they also treated each other very poorly just because of their eye color. When it came to academics, the brown-eyed people were always behind and not as smart even though this might not have been the case. Just because they were brown-eyed, they were dumb and wouldn’t be able to succeed academically.
As the kids went on with the experiment they quickly pointed out being labeled as brown eyed was similar and
She’s convinced that if she had blue eyes, all her problems would be resolved and she would
Growing up I never understood why I acted and looked the way I did. By the age of ten I realized that I was different, I did not look like my parents and I did not act like them. Yes, there were some similarities but overall I was the complete opposite. Remembering back to sophomore year I was sitting in my Biology class, learning about genetics. My mom and dad have piercing blue eyes and dark brown hair, while I had more of a green color in my eyes and red-brown hair. I learned about recessive traits and later that day I went home and researched more. As I researched I found out about a non threatening disease called heterochromia iridium, which is where your irises are different colored. From that point forward I realized that I loved genetics.
“Most cases of Heterochromia are hereditary, and these may be associated with a congenital syndrome. Other cases are acquired and caused by a disease or due to an injury. Sometimes one eye may change color following certain diseases or injuries,” (Dahl). Heterochromia is rarely an inherited genetic syndrome, but Heterochromia can be caused by Waardenbug syndrome,
The introduction of this article consisted of the development of the model for the genetics of eye color by Charles and Gertrude Davenport in 1907. For 100 years this was taught in classrooms all over the world. As time went by scientists discovered that eye color was controlled by genes and pigment, melanin. This melanin is produced by specialized cells called melanocytes. The total amount of melanin is what determines the range of eye color. To present day scientists have identified over 150 genes that influence eye pigmentation. In humans eye color is determined by the amount of light that reflects off the iris. Eight genes have been identified impact eye color.
Firstly, to discover the development of the condition, research must be done regarding the way we obtain eye colours. The trait of eye colour has been defined as polygenic, meaning it is controlled by more than one gene, and there are two known genes which code it. Both have been previously mentioned. The first resides in chromosome 15 and is named EYCL3, and is responsible for BEY (blue/brown eye colouring), the second EYCL1, is found on chromosome 19 which codes for GEY (green or blue eye colouring). It is still unknown how genes interact to
The multi-colored and in depth vision that most humans and multiple organisms share today stem from a vast history of prior organisms being only able to capture light through their eye lenses in order to see at most only four to five colors including black and white. While it is true that most organisms today and prior have shared the same common tissues and functions that manufacture the anatomical structure of the eye, throughout the years and the environmental changes, the eye has adapted or mutated with it. The eye is made of opsin that is essential in the eye in order for the image and light extracted to be transferred to the brain to create an image; “Essentially, an opsin is a kind of molecule that conveys information from the outside of a cell to the inside” (Shubin
It is not just the Color of the Eyes, but the size of the Limbal Ring
Those pretty green eyes you got from your mom are actually a complex science-genetics. A Geneticist is a biologist who study’s genetics, the science of genes, heredity, and variation or organisms. Gregor Johann Mendel work on pea plants was the starting basis for genetics. After his work was published a world wide variety of theories of heredity began to get noticed. People began to take notice of certain traits, such as the eyes, for example, people who have parents with brown eyes are going to get brown eyes, but people who have a parent with blue eyes and the other with brown, there is a chance the child can get blue eyes instead of brown eyes. Why is that? Genetics helps you really understand why this is. First is the basic information,
The Bluest Eye is a book about a nine year old girl, Claudia Macteer and her sister Frieda who decided to take Mr. Henry and Pecola Breedove. Mr. Henry who is a tenant at the house and Pecola Breedove, a foster child
Throughout the novel, the author focuses on the clash between different cultures, and the the colors that symbolize each. First, the reader reads the title, The Bluest Eye. This initially starts the color blue in relation to eyes. The eyes are the tool people use to see in order to interpret the world. In the beginning of the novel, Pecola Breedlove, “each night, without fail...prayed for blue eyes” (46). She wanted to be what she thought she
Just as fair-skinned people have a higher incidence of skin cancer, people with light-colored eyes such as blue or green have a higher risk of melanoma
