In early 2015 the former Olympic gold medalist and the now reality TV star, Bruce Jenner, came out to his family about not being comfortable with his gender identity on the famous reality television show "Keeping up with the Kardashians". It was an emotional shock to the family. Later in April 2015, the rest of the world received the news that Bruce was becoming a trans woman on 20/20 interview with Diane Sawyer. In June 2015 Jenner officially debuted to the world as Caitlyn Jenner on the cover of Vanity Fair Magazine after transforming herself into a transgender woman. This news took the world by storm which stirred up a mixture of responses from the rest of the world. Some were encouraging words to the star and others were not. Now Jenner …show more content…
After spending six centuries of her life being treated as a male being, taking on responsibilities of a normal man and being a father to six children; Caitlyn eventually came to terms with her gender dysphoria which according to her, she has suffered since her youth. When she revealed her new self to the world, Jenner stated that she is now happy to be able to live her 'true self' after her long struggle. Back when Caitlyn was Bruce Jenner, he was inspired by the story of transgender tennis player Renee Richards: who was born a man and in 1976 won the right to compete as a woman. This lead to Bruce who has gender dysphoria to start hormone therapy and to have plastic surgery to look more feminine in the late 1980s. But out of 'fear' of publicity and shame, his gender transition process came to a halt and when he was exploring the idea of gender reassignment surgery, he had a change in heart after meeting Kris Kardashian. This showed that he had always been attracted to women and was willing to keep his secret to himself until he couldn't bear it any longer, for someone he loved. Caitlyn is a republican who likes tradition. She believed for a long time that marriage is between a man with a women and 20 years ago when the topic of same sex marriages came up, she did not support it, but she said on the Ellen Show that as time went by, the people around her who were for it, changed her way of thinking to "I don't want to stand in the way of someone's happiness." This affected Caitlyn herself as in the her season 2 trailer for "I Am Cait" where she flat out says this: "To be honest I don't see myself dating women in the future." Caitlyn's background, her emotional experience and what she believed in are factors that contribute and influenced her way of thinking, it also elongated the time for her to finally be who she really is. What makes Caitlyn who she is today, was her decision of not wanting to
After finalizing the divorce of him and Kris Jenner in early 2015, a 20/20 interview with Diane Sawyer came out in April of 2015, releasing the news that Bruce came out as a transgender woman. Caitlyn said that she had dealt with gender dysphoria since her youth and that, she cross dressed for many years and also took hormone replacement therapy, but stopped after her relationship with Kris Jenner in the early 1990s became more serious. Caitlyn recounts having permission to explore her gender identity on her own from Kris, but because of not knowing the best way to talk about the issues they faced about this situation of wanting to become a woman, it lead to the deterioration of the 23-year-long
Dr. Money argued it was possible for a person to change gender successfully through surgery, socialisation and hormone replacement. Unaware Dr. Money had never attempted this before, Bruce’s parents, Ron and Janet Reimer consented. On 3rd July 1967 Bruce was surgically castrated and renamed Brenda.
First is how cisgender people understand gender. Throughout the article, Bissinger constantly refers to Caitlyn Jenner as a male. Whether intentional or otherwise, the writer's usage of he/him/his pronouns illustrates how difficult it is for people to accept the gender identity of transgender individuals. Though some may argue that Bissinger refers to Caitlyn as Bruce to distinguish the
It was New Year’s Eve 2014 and “Billy Johnson” (real name omitted) was driving home after a small get-together with his friends to celebrate the start of the upcoming New Year. Johnson left the gathering around 2:30 a.m. and began his 2.5 hour drive home. When halfway through the drive he was hit head on by a drunk driver at 63 mph. Johnson ended up dying at the hospital later that night. He left behind a wife and four small children all under the age of 10. Within an instant, the lives of his wife and children were changed forever. “Kayla Johnson” (real name omitted) suddenly became a widow and struggled to figure out how she would provide for her family all by herself. You see, she was a stay-at-home mom and Billy was the sole provider for their family. But now that he was gone, she was lost. Over a year went by, and Kayla still found herself struggling after the loss of Billy. As a result, in the spring of 2016 Kayla filed a wrongful-death lawsuit against the drunk driver who killed Billy. It was a long and difficult lawsuit and trial for Kayla and her family to go through but in the fall of 2017 Kayla was awarded $3 million dollars.
A hero to us is someone who influences the general public in a positive way even though they aren’t physically there. We consider Beyonce as our hero because she leaves a great impact on the music industry and teaches women and girls to not be ashamed of themselves. She also gives an image of self love and respect by not being ashamed of her body. Beyonce is the type of person that actually admits that she isn’t perfect and by doing this it gives something other people can relate with . This makes her of a more realistic hero to them. Beyonce is also a supporter of the LGBT community which tells people that she doesn’t judge. Not only that, through her music her she teaches young girls and women to be powerful and to know that they are are just
In the article “America’s Transition” Steinmetz reports that George traveled to Denmark to begin his transition to a woman named Christine Jorgensen (40). In the 1950s the transition from male-to-female was very rare. The subject of transition from an assigned sex at birth to the opposite was taboo. After Christine’s story was published in the New York Daily News and Time, American society began to question the definition of gender and why George was now Christine. Deceptively like today, as Time magazine mentions, “history is filled with people who did not fit society’s definition or gender (40).” Media talks about transgender, and it seems new, but it is not. Transgender is not something that just occurred today and had never been heard of before. This subject is just now coming out into the open more often than usual. In parallel to the “coming out” from transition, society is not far from the 1950’s because there is still stereotypes and discrimination against the transgender
Throughout the years, she tried to hide the fact that she was a woman trapped in a man’s body, but eventually, that subsided. Gladwell stated: “But if you're taking on a powerful and organized establishment you have to be a hierarchy” (Gladwell 237). In other words, Gladwell is saying that in order to initiate a trend, it should be an individual who stands up for what he or she believes in, regardless of the cost. Caitlyn was a prime example of one who stands with bravery and took a risk, confessing to everyone the transition that was happening in her life. This courageous action influenced and touched the hearts of many people, allowing other transgender individuals to act freely and not hide his or her identity.
Communication is a process that allows us to construct identities based on the interpretation and intention of speech acts. Caitlyn Jenner, formerly known as Bruce Jenner, spent most her life identified by her master identity as a cis-white-male and until a few years ago she adopted the interactional identity of a transgender female. In this paper, I will demonstrate how various forms of speech acts build, remain and/or change the master and interactional identity of Caitlyn Jenner as well as her relationships to others. To do so I will explain how Caitlyn Jenner seeks advice from her close family member Scott Disick to help her understand the variety of speech acts coming from both her private and public life: ranging from Scott who demonstrate face redress and accept her based on her new interaction identity as a female, while also dealing with the face threats that come from those (particularly males) who only see her as her previous master identity as a male.
Over the past few years, the issues faced by people who identify as transgender (gender dysphoric) have gained momentum in the media. From Caitlyn Jenner to which bathroom to use, transgender people have made a lot of progress in addressing
Jay identifies as a gay man and he has recently come out to his family and several friends. Growing up, Jay revealed that he knew he liked the opposite sex; however, coming from a big Christian home, he felt like he needed to suppress his thoughts. He mentioned, “My mother reacted the worst, crying, feeling a sense of denial, and even refusing to speak to me a couple times.” He mentioned that his mother blamed herself a couple times for his sexual orientation claiming that she, “should’ve been more proactive in asking questions about his relationships.” His grandmother, however,
But how likely is it that Caitlyn Jenner is dating Candis Cayne? After all, in her interview with Diane Sawyer, she essentially said that dating was last on her list of priorities as she transitioned.
The scenario provided above illustrate the condition where the safe practice in healthcare system in jeopardy. I think it is it is the nurse’s duty to the patient and coworkers to relay the facts to the chain of commands, starts to the nurse manager and to the house and so on. My rationale is simply because all nurses have an ethical responsibility to practice no harm to patient. In this case, patient may be in danger of respiratory infection spread by the doctor. Double masks and splash shield are not going to guarantee there is no spread of infection from the doctor to the patient and coworkers, especially in the operating room. To me, this is also the safest action for the charge nurse. It is our own responsibility to maintain professional competence and protect our license. A third of bottle of cough syrup may also cause some side effect that may impair the doctor performance during surgery.
