Caitlyn Jenner Francis Scott Key is the creator of many famous quotes used today. One of them is, “the land of the free, and the home of the brave.” America has some situations where that is questioned, if people are really, truly free. Sadly, the answer is no. Individuals who want to change themselves, or do things outside of the ordinary are often looked down upon, and controversy is created. There are people who agree and support, while others have opinions and reasons against. Take Bruce Jenner for example; a great Olympian athlete, father, husband, grandfather, and celebrity, who in his late sixties decides to be a female. A wave of negative words, emotions, actions, and slurs began to appear about him, putting him down greatly, just because he found his true self. If someone wants to go to the great lengths to be happy, they should be able to do it, with support …show more content…
“It’s hard to decide what’s more frustrating about Bruce Jenner’s decision play-act a woman named Caitlyn: that we’re all supposed to ohh and aww over his new feminine face or curvy breasts, or that we’re supposed to act like this is at once fantastic and normal, brave and routine,” says Russell. Individuals all over the world question if Bruce’s transition is really brave, or just for attention, after sixty-five years of living. Since he is doing it publicly, with an interview with Diane Sawyer, and on Keeping Up With the Kardashians, it is easy for people to think that way. Adding onto that, since he is a celebrity, he is able to afford all of the surgeries, and the top doctors and plastic surgeons, but for other people, they are not so lucky. He cannot symbolize the transgender community when the population is not as fortunate as him. Bruce Jenner is looked at as not being a good role model for the transgender community in America
After finalizing the divorce of him and Kris Jenner in early 2015, a 20/20 interview with Diane Sawyer came out in April of 2015, releasing the news that Bruce came out as a transgender woman. Caitlyn said that she had dealt with gender dysphoria since her youth and that, she cross dressed for many years and also took hormone replacement therapy, but stopped after her relationship with Kris Jenner in the early 1990s became more serious. Caitlyn recounts having permission to explore her gender identity on her own from Kris, but because of not knowing the best way to talk about the issues they faced about this situation of wanting to become a woman, it lead to the deterioration of the 23-year-long
America is the home the of free and brave, but how much freedom can someone have? If you ask someone what is freedom? The answer you’ll receive will probably be different from your own. The word freedom can be defined in many ways by different people. Just like any other opinion, no one thinks alike. Some people now in America feel that they’re free. On the contrary, there are individuals that can surely tell you that they don’t have rights that others have due to a technicality. In the past, there has been a history of brave people who stand up to the government to receive the rightful freedom that belongs to them and others. Some of those individuals shared similar qualities but also had their differences as well. The changes that some of those individuals left improved the daily lifestyles of the community in general. Their acts weren’t approved by most of the government. Although the actions brought improvement to society to receive rightful freedom for all it took some time to accept the balance of freedom and social & civic responsibilities.
America the land of the free wasn’t always free for everyone, it was a place of slavery, racism, sexism and more. Since our beginning we have solved many of these problems, however, they haven’t disappeared completely. While civil liberties issues have been mostly resolved for race and gender, in the U.S there still exists issues with basic liberties in other aspects of life. This is proven through the use of logos and pathos within Susan B Anthony’s speech, “What to the American Slave is Your 4th of July” by Frederick Douglas, and the photograph Susan B Anthony’s grave.
In the article “America’s Transition” Steinmetz reports that George traveled to Denmark to begin his transition to a woman named Christine Jorgensen (40). In the 1950s the transition from male-to-female was very rare. The subject of transition from an assigned sex at birth to the opposite was taboo. After Christine’s story was published in the New York Daily News and Time, American society began to question the definition of gender and why George was now Christine. Deceptively like today, as Time magazine mentions, “history is filled with people who did not fit society’s definition or gender (40).” Media talks about transgender, and it seems new, but it is not. Transgender is not something that just occurred today and had never been heard of before. This subject is just now coming out into the open more often than usual. In parallel to the “coming out” from transition, society is not far from the 1950’s because there is still stereotypes and discrimination against the transgender
Caitlyn Jenner was given the Excellence in Sports Performance Yearly Awards (ESPY) Arthur Ashe Award for Courage. Twice an Olympic triathlon athlete, she blazed new trails. Long before her transformation, Jenner lived a life that her family and society expected of her: a loyal, loving son and father and an outstanding sportsman. Her newest role was as an advocate for the transgender community, which may become one of her greatest roles. Presently, Caitlyn Jenner’s purpose was to promote sexual diversity, accepting differences, and respect for all human beings. As I watched Jenner accept her award, I reflected back on my understanding of transgender orientation.
America is one word that brings the hope of freedom to many people around the world. Since the United States’ humble beginnings freedom has remained at the core of its ideologies and philosophies. People of all races, nations, and tongues have found refuge in America. The National Anthem proclaims, “…land of the free, and home of the brave” (Key, 1814). But has America been consistently a land of the free? Unfortunately freedom has not always reigned. There is a constant struggle to overcome fear and prejudice in order to provide a true land of freedom. In times of heightened tension, the masses of common people seek to find a scapegoat. Often, this scapegoat is a minority
Throughout the years, she tried to hide the fact that she was a woman trapped in a man’s body, but eventually, that subsided. Gladwell stated: “But if you're taking on a powerful and organized establishment you have to be a hierarchy” (Gladwell 237). In other words, Gladwell is saying that in order to initiate a trend, it should be an individual who stands up for what he or she believes in, regardless of the cost. Caitlyn was a prime example of one who stands with bravery and took a risk, confessing to everyone the transition that was happening in her life. This courageous action influenced and touched the hearts of many people, allowing other transgender individuals to act freely and not hide his or her identity.
The most common phrase in America today is “Home of the Free”. When America first started out in the Colonies the above quote was probably very true. As time has passed through the centuries, America has felt the need to regulate and reduce the freedom that our founding fathers had intentionally planned for us. Such things as religion, reproductive rights, Native Americans and their rights, and marriage rights are being marginalized. These rights could be considered private matters that the government shouldn’t get involved with and probably rightly so.
Communication is a process that allows us to construct identities based on the interpretation and intention of speech acts. Caitlyn Jenner, formerly known as Bruce Jenner, spent most her life identified by her master identity as a cis-white-male and until a few years ago she adopted the interactional identity of a transgender female. In this paper, I will demonstrate how various forms of speech acts build, remain and/or change the master and interactional identity of Caitlyn Jenner as well as her relationships to others. To do so I will explain how Caitlyn Jenner seeks advice from her close family member Scott Disick to help her understand the variety of speech acts coming from both her private and public life: ranging from Scott who demonstrate face redress and accept her based on her new interaction identity as a female, while also dealing with the face threats that come from those (particularly males) who only see her as her previous master identity as a male.
It took her 65 years to finally find that missing piece of her identity and to learn that she was not meant to be in Bruce Jenner’s body – a man’s body. By transforming to Caitlyn, she has explored her true identity and redefined
Over the past few years, the issues faced by people who identify as transgender (gender dysphoric) have gained momentum in the media. From Caitlyn Jenner to which bathroom to use, transgender people have made a lot of progress in addressing
America prides itself on being one of the most open-minded and tolerant nations in the world. In many cases, it is true. America does allow “the pursuit of happiness” for many, including other religions, immigrants, and, most recently, homosexuals with the passing of the Supreme Court decision which now allows gay marriage throughout the nation. However, when faced with transgenderism, America remains ignorant. A phobia against transgender people is prominent amongst the American people. This hatred and misunderstanding was evident during Bruce Jenner’s transition to Caitlyn Jenner. People took to name-calling, used transphobic slurs, and even refused to call Caitlyn Jenner by the pronoun she felt comfortable with. Due to this is a high-profile
In a lot of places around the world more and more people are coming out as “Transgender.” The term transgender means that the person’s gender identity does not correspond with the gender they were assigned as having at birth. From personally having a transgender boyfriend I have since realized that these people experience a lot of discrimination in and from society. Many people simply just do not understand what the term transgender means and they see it as someone just “wants to be a man” or “wants to be a woman.” While there may be people who present it this way, it is more so that the individual just “feels” different, and “feels” as if they are “in the wrong body.” Some people experience this feeling at a young age as my boyfriend did in his elementary age. We live in a world who put these people down for being who they truly are, and no human being wants or needs that.
Transgendered people in America have made many great strides since the 1990s. They have encountered violence, lack of health care, and the loss of homes, jobs, family and friends. There have been many phases of the struggle of being transgendered in America over the years. The current phase we must be in now is equal rights. There are many variations of discrimination against the transgendered community. In our society we simply do not like what we do not understand. It is easier to discriminate than to try and understand. We are all created different and we should appreciate our differences. The change must come by addressing the views of the public. There is much justification in the unequal rights of transgendered peoples. The Human
Many people have spoken about having a tough time accepting a person since the way they sexually identify themselves is different. Being identified as transgender has become a highly controversial topic around the world and part of the population does not quite understand why the people that identify themselves as transgender choose to do so. Some people do not believe in what it means to be transgender and let their opinions on the topic change the real meaning of the term.
