Why are there so many Chuck Norris jokes but hardly any Bruce Lee jokes? Because Bruce Lee is no joke. Through his films, philosophy, and legacy, Bruce Lee became an icon to the world. Lee’s films had consumed the kung fu genre, and in doing so made him an icon. First of all, kung fu was a new and growing genre, and Lee had monopolized them. According to Bruce Lee’s Wikipedia, before stardom Lee would take on minor roles in American TV dramas; in order to prove his worth, Lee went to China to star in films produced by Golden Harvest that would be promoted to Hollywood executives. Lee broke back to back box office records with his first two films The Big Boss and Fist of Fury. Lee then went on to act and direct Way of the Dragon in which Bruce Lee and Chuck Norris filmed a fight scene that is now considered one of the most memorable fight scenes in martial arts films. While filming his fourth Golden Harvest film Game of Death, Warner Bros had offered Lee a starring role in Enter the Dragon. Lee’s untimely death had occurred just days before the release of Enter the Dragon. Enter the Dragon would go on to be one of the highest grossing movies of the year and instill Lee as a martial arts icon (3 Acting Career). Secondly, Lee brought kung fu movies to America. Lee provided the ground work for other martial artists such as Jackie Chan and Jet Li to continue; in short, if Bruce Lee hadn’t accomplished what he did, Jackie Chan and Jet Li may have made it in China but not
