The type of warfare conducted by the US forces was one of brutality and senselessness. It was also in some ways a politically motivated war. Some of the brutality can be found in the sear number of casualties on the Philippine side. According to the text in the province of Batangas was estimated to have lost at least 1/3 of its 300,00 population due to the war. Also a captain from Kansas wrote: “Caloocan was supposed to contain 17,000 inhabitants. The Twentieth Kansas swept through it, and now Caloocan contains not one living native." (Zinn, 1980) Examples of the senselessness can be seen in the text when it mentions Littletown Waller. He was a marine accused of murdering several Filipinos who were defenseless. According to other marines:

According to Ann Marie Paulin in “Cruelty, Civility and Other Weighty Matters”, the mass media are discriminating against overweight people, which creates a society where being fat is looked down upon. Paulin argues that, “the media are notorious for getting things less than accurate” (243), therefore we shouldn’t believe how they depict fat people on tv, magazines and other media sources. The author believes that not all overweight people are like, how the media portrays them, but rather their lifestyle is influenced by the culture we live in. She claimed that, “Sugary or fatty foods are often available in grab and go packages that are so much easier to take to work or eat in the car than making a healthy snack” (245). She believe there are evidence to show that humans are naturally attracted to unhealthy foods, but society continue to manufacture them to make people eat more (243-249). I agree with Paulin about how the media need to stop fat shaming because it’s not only making people feel bad, but it is promoting obesity.
The war saw countless devastating war methods that not only killed thousands but killed them in torturous ways. An example of one of the tactics can be seen in document 13 in which water is forced into a person until their stomach nearly bursts and the person is beaten until they vomit all of the water back out; this is also known as water curing. This is repeated many more times as a way to gain information about the enemy. The American soldiers were not able to differentiate which of the Filipinos was a friend or foe because of the Amigo warfare strategy where the Filipinos pretended to be friends during the day but attacked at night. It is worth mentioning that America also used something similar to this scheme when they first entered the
Justice for Theo is a movement that began in France following an incident of police brutality. 22-year-old Theo is a black man who, prior to the incident, had no criminal history. In February of this year, he was stopped by police performing an ID check. Sources say that Theo did not have an ID on him, leading to him being beaten by four officers and sodomized by one with a baton. Following the incident, a video surfaced which showed Theo being pushed against the wall and beaten, while being taunted with racial slurs. The injuries he sustained required emergency surgery, although French police claim that the use of excessive force and the rape was by accident.
John Cox is the author of To Kill a People and a professor at UNCC. Meeting John Cox was very exciting because I never met an author before. I can't believe he took the time to sit down with us, discuss his book, and answer our questions.
You’re driving with your girlfriend and child, on your way home after a long day. You suddenly get pulled over by a cop. You do as the cop says, in addition, you decide it’s not best to argue back. You speak calmly and do as the cop says, yet they are afraid of you and think you will try something horrific. As soon as you’re about to show them your license, it is suddenly too late. You are shot and are no longer alive. It took 40 seconds for an ordinary traffic stop to turn deadly. This occurred to a man named Philando Castile. He was fatally shot by a cop when he was reaching for his license. Philando Castile informed him beforehand that he legally had a firearm in his car before they decide to shoot or arrest him. However, the cop said that he
American Soldiers who brutalized Filipino insurgents were simply following orders. According to the testimony of the U.S. senate in 1902 he informs us that American Soldiers were following the orders of there Sergeant. For example “... how the order started and who gave it I don’t know, but the town was fired on. I saw and old fellow come to the door, and he looked out; he got shot in the abdomen and fell to his knees and turned around and died.” This shows that U.S. soldiers were being ordered to shoot civilians and being soldiers they had to obey. The Americans believed “The orders were given to fire. Go ahead and tell the whole story….At the other end of the town we heard screams, and there was a woman there; she was burned up, and in
“I can’t breathe! I can’t breathe!” These were the last words of Eric Garner, a middle-aged African American man. Garner died at the hands of multiple police officers who were trying to restrain him for selling cigarettes. These sorts of images are showcased on television way too often. To the point that some people feel helpless, they know that they alone do not have the power to overthrow the superiority of an officer. So they have really no choice but watch the tragedy unfold. Also fear that if they interfere, that they may be the next victim. “I am most struck by the behavior of the EMTs, who stood along with the police and did nothing as they watched Eric Garner die” (Williams 10). Although some people deny that police brutality is a problem, recent studies and events (such as the one listed above) prove that ultra-aggressive police officers, militarization of police agencies, and the effects of racism have increased police brutality.
First, it is crucial to note that police brutality is not synonymous to racism against a particular group. However, there is a stigma that police often racially profile a specific African Americans. In February 2015, two cases of police brutality did not involve African Americans; instead the two victims were a Hispanic shot and killed in Washington State and an Indian-American severely paralyzed in Alabama. Even with this considered, of late, a majority of police brutality cases have involved minorities and specifically African American males. Cases such as Michael Brown and Freddie Gray have sparked a cultural uprising. These trigger event inspired the protests and riots against police brutality demonstrating collective action and physical violence, but the idea of police brutality is much larger than these individual cases, since it is a reoccurring cycle.
Killings among young men of color has risen in these past few years during altercations with the police. African-American and Latin-American men are dying for reasons such as rush of judgement and possible acts of racism. These acts that are being committed are considered the term of police brutality. Police officers seem to be shooting unarmed men of color as the ultimate solution when being confronted with these altercations. These three examples I will provide will show how many young minority men are being killed at unprecedented rates across America.
In Book II, Chapter 1 of the Nicomachean Ethics, Aristotle writes that the moral virtues arise in us “neither by nature…nor contrary to nature” (1103a24). The following will address and dissect Aristotle’s asserting by addressing (1) how the moral virtues are not by nature, (2) how they are not contrary to nature, and (3) how exactly moral virtues arise in human beings. Aristotle’s claims that moral virtues do not arise in us by nature can best be described through his analogy of human sense perception. As humans we possess the power of sight and hearing irrespective of any actions we perform or training we undergo. Rather than practicing or cultivating the art of sight of hearing, we “first acquire the potentiality and later exhibit the activity”
An exceptional movie will have audience members feel the emotion, tells tragic stories, and informs society about important issues. The Path to Violence shows violent events across the United States that cause viewers to become sentimental. The film released in 2013 by JWM Productions illustrates the problems of violence and safety at various educational institutions. It educates the public on why school shootings happen and to speak up about strange behavior exhibited by students. This is an eye-opening film filled with important lessons about violence in schools. The movie shows the violence stems from students not speaking up about peculiar behavior and inferior security.
In “Shame: The emotions and morality of violence,” James Gilligan, a professor of Psychiatry at New York University, argues to make a point that shame can lead to violence in a certain amount of people. After working and interviewing with two convicts in a prison, he learns that there are three preconditions to be met before being considered violent. The first is to not show their feelings of being ashamed due to it threatening their masculinity. The second is that they can’t counteract shame with their social status, achievements, friends and family. The last is not to feel love, guilt, or fear. These preconditions make Gilligan more understanding of the inmates and their lives.
Horizontal violence is a negative phenomenon that is increasing significantly in the hospital setting. It is defined as bullying, verbal and physical aggression that occurs to employees in the workforce. Horizontal violence has harmful effects on nurses as it lowers their self- esteem, and makes them feel as if they have no power in their career. This phenomenon also negatively impacts patient centered care and safety as nurses are more vulnerable to making medication errors and careless mistakes. Horizontal violence can be decreased in the hospital setting if interventions are implemented by members of the health care team. Education is key to decrease the occurrence of horizontal violence as it enables health care workers to
