Company Background Build-A-Bears mission statement states, “At Build-A-Bear Workshop®, our mission is to bring the Teddy Bear to life. An American icon, the Teddy Bear brings to mind warm thoughts about our childhood, about friendship, about trust and comfort, and also about love. Build-A-Bear Workshop embodies those thoughts in how we run our business everyday.” (Buildabear.com 2012). Build-A-Bear Workshop, Inc. is the leading and only global company that offers an interactive make-your-own stuffed animal retail-entertainment experience. It starts off with choosing your stuffed animal, then you choose a recording you want your bear to say. Following this comes the stuffing, stitching, and fluffing. You then go off to a computer and name it, which then leads to dressing it and finally you taking it home. This experience is something that no competitor offers in the market.
A weakness that Build-A-Bear Workshop faces is that the experience that is offered, may not be as satisfying as advertised. If the store is busy, the customer may not have as much time to create their own stuffed animal as they would have if it wasn't busy. Also, the employees may not be as warming and helpful if things are busy. Build-A-Bear has a reputation of friendliness and family but this reputation could hurt them if things don't always happen that way.
Build-A-Bear has grown significantly since it started including parts of Europe and Asia. The opportunity to continue to grow, not only nationally, but globally. There are several locations here in the United States that Build-A-Bears can open especially towards the west coast. Globally, there is more of an opportunity as parts of Asia, Europe, and nearly all of Africa have not been tapped. Everywhere there is a child, there is an opportunity for a stuffed animal product.
Threats to Build-A-Bear Workshop include the possibility of competitors entering the market and innovating the product. For example. if a

Animal Asia Foundation’s short video “End Bear Farming” (2001) demonstrates how most bears in China, especially moon bears, are suffering. These animals endure extreme level of pain in environments where many diseases can develop through immoral and disgusting actions such as bear bile extraction from living bears without anesthetics. In recent articles Ryunosuke Kikuchi, IK Loeffler, J Robinson and G Cochrane have offered harsh critiques encouraging people to stop this cruel action. There are some images in “Compromised Health and Welfare of Bears Farmed for Bile in China” (Loeffler, Robinson and Cochrane 228-229) and text which show the method of bile extraction. Toys R Us is now more than just a place to shop, they have created experiences which bring their stores to life with their interactive games that the kids highly enjoy playing (Toys “R” Us Inc, 2017).
