Bullying is defined as a dynamic and repetitive and persistent patterns of verbal and / or non-verbal behaviors directed by one or more children on another child that are intended to deliberately inflict physical, verbal or emotional abuse in the presence of a real or perceived power differential (Selekman and Vessey). In other words, it is a group of people who directed an act to threaten, hurt or frighten that individual when he is unable to defend himself. The article outlined and covered the details of bullying – corresponding behaviors, place, time and reasons of bullying, what intervention works and does not work. Deviance helps to clarify moral boundaries and affirms norms – as bullying is one of the way to be deviant; we usually divide ourselves as people being bullied or the bully, we would identify characteristics of bring a bully or a victim, marking the boundary that if we get pass the line, we will be another party. Moreover, it promotes social unity thus leads to corresponding social changes. As we group and identify ourselves as victim or bully or rarely – third party, we would view another one as people are deviating if we put ourselves into a bully or victim’s identity. We would form a tight bond and look for commonality or agreement amongst your group, promoting social unity. As circumstances change, it will lead to social change when the issue intensifies or gets better. These deviance – bullying will serve as a function in a society, as a result, emphasizing social order.

One usually becomes mature as they face something tough during adolescence, we start to get detached from our childhood and face our reality. Bullying is one of the ways of communication, people playing different parts in bullying changes how one views themselves and the society around them.
According to Karl Marx, conflict theory explains the circumstances when groups competing for power and scarce resources. Nowadays, it means opposing interests in every layer of society (families, groups, organizations, a community or an entire society). It can be viewed as positive as it can bring about positive change, such as feminists and conflict theory – it challenges the fact that men should dominate the society (Henslin, 2013).
In the early few chapters of part 1, some bullies were introduced, such as Cody Perkins, Clay Whelan and Sullivan. Andre and his brother Jeb were always beaten up and being sworn on their face. Bullying is unwanted, aggressive behavior among people of all ages, but mostly school-age children. Society has been aware of bullying since around 1693, but it was not viewed as a real problem until the 1970s. “While overall incidents of school violence, such as assault and theft, have declined in the last decade, bullying is on the rise.” (qtd in Tyre) The percentage of middle and high school students that have been victimized by bullying went up from 14 percent in 2001 to 32 percent in 2009. Bullies may grow up and lead a life of ultimate rebellion or crime. These students start off with bullying and advance into acts of vandalism, theft, and alcohol and possible drug abuse. Bullies Spread rumors about someone, or embarrassing them in public all with the intention of ruining their social status amongst their peers. In cases you have strong minded individuals that can stand tall in these situations and move past this obstacle currently present. Bullying is a problem that is on the rise in society; however, many individuals have a distorted view of what bullying entails. Usually when someone thinks of bullying, they assume that it is a standard part of a child’s life. This view, on the contrary, is erroneous. In many cases children may start bullying other children because they don’t understand that is wrong. Bullying also can be learning from home, community, television, movies or internet. The bullies can be also victimization by others, physical abuse, modeling of bullying behavior from parents or lack of supervision by parents.
Not only are bullies expanding in their tactics but the victims of bullying are suffering significantly worse consequences. In reading the novel, 13 Reasons Why, readers learn about different types of bullying, the consequences of bullying, how to prevent bullying, and how others can help those being bullied. The social context of the novel 13 Reasons Why, and the heartbreaking consequences prove that bullying is a growing issue. In the beginning of 13 Reasons Why the main character Clay, comes home to find a box delivered on his front porch.
At some point in our lives we have either bullied, been a victim of a bully, or known someone that’s been bullied. It affects how we encounter the next person, and how we approach our future. I was very touched by this story and it crushed my heart. The child wanted to fit in so bad, and accepted ridicule just to have friends. How can the kids look in another child’s eyes and not see their hurt? Andy had a hard, rough life and I’m sure when he went to school he forgot about the problems he had to face alone. The “popular” boys found amusement in picking and making a mockery of Andy. Who really is the coward? In my personal opinion the coward are the boys who wronged Andy and the leader of the boys who knew it was wrong from the start.
With school-aged children, bullying more frequently happens while they are at school, or afterward when the students are not being supervised by their teacher in places like the cafeteria, bus, lockers, playground or neighborhood. Now that kids have access to online technology, bullying can also happen on the internet. With this in mind, teachers must now research and understand what bullying is, and develop methods to help fight against bullying. Bullying is the aggressive, unwanted behavior that occurs between kids of all ages. Children that bully are using the power they believe they have over other kids to try to control and harm them. Bullying can happen via verbal, social, or physical abuses, such as name-calling, threats, spreading rumors, isolation, embarrassment, spitting, hitting, destroying personal things, etc. In order to be considered bullying, these bad behaviors are repeated over time.
It has been investigated that there are two main features found in bullying behavior, power-concerned to bullying and affiliation-concerned to bullying, are connected to being violent and hurting others. (Fekkes,Pijpers,& Verloove-Vanhorick;2004).
School bullying and bullying as a whole has become a growing concern. The need for more intervention is more recognized, as incidents of bullying and inappropriate acts towards others occur in places outside of the classroom. This literature takes a closer look at bullying in schools. Olwesus (2013) states “the field of bullying research is to some extent plagued by problems, disagreements, and unresolved issues” (p.752). Whether if anyone will agree on the root of bullying, the fact remains that bullying has to be examined at its very core to remedy the matter before it becomes a bigger concern. There is a dire need for intervention based programs to be set in place to address the fact the act of bullying has lasting effects on the bully and the victim. When intervention programs are put into place to address bullying, the act of bullying decreases due to the gained understanding of the effects.
Thesis: Bullying in its many forms affects all people no matter age, gender, and class, but the effects can be very dangerous and very hurtful.
