Bullying’s Effect on Generation Y
Every teenager hates when their parents relate back to their generation being in school and how it was so easy. The world needs to take into account all of the ongoing norms that keep altering in generations today. Society around us changes everyday which means the things you have to go through are different than what other generations might’ve had to overcome. Robin Henig and Maria Konnikova separately researched and wrote about this “millennial generation” and how different aspects are playing into the decline of maturation for adolescence into adulthood. Technologies easy access to social media today is what really needs to be focused on. Although social networking allows for great connections and even expands your friend group, Konnikova is right. Networking is only causing a decline in social interaction around the world and in my opinion leading us as humans to more judgement, ridicule, and bullying. The acts of bullying are affecting Gen Y's adult years more than people are realizing, as it potentially leads to psychological problems, wrong decisions, and even alters social interactions with others.
Studies show that bullied teens further face psychological distress in adulthood. “Fosse and Holen reported from a retrospective investigation that almost half (46 %) of the patients from an adult psychiatric outpatient clinic in Norway reported to have been bullied in childhood”(Source 3). Nearly half of the adults interviewed in
An average bullying session lasts about 37 seconds; an adult intervenes in the problem about one in twenty-five times (Bullying Facts). Bullying is seen as aggressive and unwanted behavior between two or more people (Aspa). Most people who are not involved in the actions going on do not really know it’s happening. Most parents do not even know when their child, or children, are being bullied (Bullying Facts). Bullying can be prevented if the right consequences take place. Parents and schools have the rules about bullying prevention, but these do not prevent the bullying from continuing their ways. People who bully often should receive bigger consequences because eventually the problem could escalate and the bully will continue their
Teasing and playing around are all part of growing up; however, what happens when it happens over and over. The Hernando County Code of Conduct defines bullying as:
Understanding the notion of bullying is undermined by an individual’s point of view, life experience, and personality. What some people declare as bullying others shake off as a typical behavior of kids. Whether the bias also has a base in gender or age the issue that needs to be dealt with is the damage done to the victim and the mental health needs of the perpetrator. The question regarding bullying is about norms and responses to violations of the norms. How students and adults interpret the actions, reactions, and feelings are tied to the level of open communications that exist. Adults often believe it when the student says ‘I’m fine’ because they want to believe it. Students are quite skillful about saying what they think adults want to hear. This lack of communication at home and school leaves a student who is being bullied isolated and vulnerable.
Oppression (bullying) is a significant figure in the life of students (Santrock, 2001). Bullying involves aggressive behavior (Rigby, 2004). Definition aggressive itself is an attack, invasion or act of hostility directed against a person or object (Chaplin, 2005). Meanwhile, aggressiveness (Chaplin, 2005) itself is a habitual tendency (which is accustomed) to exhibit hostility, social dominance, social power to extremes. Olweus (Krahe, 2005) defines bullying is negative behavior of a person or more to the victims of bullying is done repeatedly and occur from time to time. In addition, bullying also involves strength and power that is not balanced, so that the victim is in a state unable to defend themselves effectively against the negative
I have been bullied my whole life, from first grade to present day(9th grade). Bullying is not fun, it really hurts. They say “sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me”. Well I’m here to tell you that’s a lie. I get bullied everyday about everything; me being overweight, how dark I am, how deep my voice is. Everyday I go through this, but I have learned to deal with this. The only reason people bully you is because they're jealous of you, so that means you're doing something right. So remember ,”Be Happy, Be Healthy”. So Slay till your hair turns gray.(Anonymous 2017)The situation that this person is in is that everyday she wakes up and goes through crap and deals with it because she is already used to and she doesn't
Some people would tell you yes. Bullying can involve direct physical and verbal abuse, it can involve more subtle forms of indirect aggression, such as spreading rumors. I was bullied all through elementary School, Jr. High, and even High School. It made me the man that I am now. Sticks, stones, and words really did hurt me back then. I can remember in elementary school I was always bullied by a group of kids when I got off school. Every day they would wait for me and chase me all the way home from school. I was too fast for them and they never caught me. In school it was a different story. They made my life miserable because I wasn’t able escape from them in school. Bullying can
How often do you hear on the news that yet another teenager committed suicide or self-harmed due to constant bullying from peers? One of the most prevalent issues that adolescents and young adults face is the issue of bullying. Defined in the academic article Adult Psychiatric Outcomes of Bullying and Being Bullied by Peers in Childhood and Adolescence, in the 1960s, bullying was described as “collective aggression against others of the same species” (Copeland, Wolke, Angold, Costello, 2013). As accurate and convincing as that may sound, bullying still tends to be viewed as “just a harmless rite of passage or an inevitable part of growing up” (Copeland, Wolke, Angold, Costello, 2013). According to the conductors of this study, that could not
“Children’s Reading and Children’s Thinking are the rock bottom base upon which the future of this country will rise. Or not rise. In these days of tension and confusion, writers are beginning to realize that Books for Children have a greater potential for good, or evil, than any other form of literature on earth. They realize that the new generations must grow up to be more intelligent than ours”-(Dr Seuss, 1960).
Bullying can take several different forms from physical, verbal, emotional and cyberbullying. Physical bullying can be kicking, slapping, coking, pushing, hitting, pinching, violence or threats, theft or intentional damage of possessions. Verbal bullying can be an individual name calling, insulting, being sarcastic, spreading rumours and persistently teasing another child or young person. Emotional bullying is making a child or young person feel bad about themselves through exclusion, being overlooked, torment, ridicule and humiliation. Cyberbullying involves the use of technology and communications (mobile phones, SMS, social media) to target and upset someone by posting messages, emails, photos and videos that can be humiliating. Bullying
According to the online dictionary, a bully is someone that uses superior strength or influence to intimidate another person typically to force the bullied person to do what the bully wants them to do. Bullying, whether in person or in the cyber world, has become an extremely large issue in society. I live in a very small, rural community where life is very laid back and everyone knows each other, but bullying still exists. I find it very interesting that each public school in Pennsylvania has an anti-bullying system that is practiced, anti-bullying is consistently taught in media and in religious institutions but it doesn’t seem to have impacted the rate of bullying issues. Most teenagers, whether they are the bully or the bullied, think the programs that they must participate in are a joke, and the media plays on the stories of those that
The concept of bullying at work refers to all situations where one or more persons feel subjected to negative behavior from others in the workplace over a period of time and in a situation where they for different reasons are unable to defend themselves against these actions (Einasern, 2005). The young lady was been bullied and sexually harrased by her top exececutive boss, he had no right to make her feel that way to the point of ebven locking herself up just to avoid his lewd advances. Work rights are their to protect employes from such behvaiours from the boss, however I further read that in Russia Sexual harassment is a norm in the work place because their culture has finally normalised it which can be clearly seen from the way the judge ruled on this case sexual harassment that the twenty year girl brought to his courtroom. In Russia, 40 percent of female professionals have had sex with their boss at least once, according to the story and “eighty per cent of those who participated in the survey said they did not believe it possible to win promotion without engaging in sexual relations with their male superiors (Einasern, 2005). Such kind of notions makes it okay for the perpetrators to think that its normal to sexually harassed women at work and objectify it. I have been a similar situation where the top boss of our department’s husband who works for the same company started sending me inappropriate emails; I went to my immediate boss and reported the emails. My immediate boss was afraid to deal with the situation because the perpetrators’ wife was her boss and friend. This left with no choice but to take to management. Management cautioned the perpetrator and he stopped but his wife started giving me a cold shoulder and started treating me differently after this, as if I was the one in the wrong. We have to bear in mind she was my boss as well, so you can imagine how uncomfortable the situation was at work. I did not care about her reaction because her husband is pig who caused two other young ladies before me to resign because of his sick behaviour. I still wonder why the company has not fired him knowing that he has done this before. Thankfully, I left the company a after that to start work at new
Bullying is defined as unwanted or aggressive behavior that causes someone to feel afraid or intimidated. This behavior could be something physical, verbal, or something done electronically or through social media. If someone feels threatened by someone’s actions or words, it could be considered bullying, even if that was not the intent. There are many types of bullying, how to recognize bullying, how to report bullying, what to do if you see incidents of bullying, and what resources are available to persons who have been bullied.
Bullying is more than the physical act that many individuals first think of such as punching, kicking, or hitting. There are many forms of bullying that has evolved over time which includes verbal, physical, psychological, and electronic. According to the New Jersey’s Anti-Bullying Bill of Rights Act (2012), harassment, intimidation, and bullying is any gesture, written, verbal, or physical act, or electronic communication. It can be a single or series of incidents that is motivated by a characteristic of race, color, religion, ancestry, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, expression, or a mental, physical or sensory disability (p. 9). The National Bullying Prevention Center (2016) found that one in every five students have reported being bullied. With this high number of affected students, there has been an exceptional amount of support of parents, educators, and legislators that are determined to stop the issue against this diverse population. This paper will provide extensive research of the ethical issue of bullying. It will examine bullying and discrimination of race, sexual orientation, and disabilities in schools through New Jersey legislation, anti-bullying organizations as well as peer-reviewed journals.
When I was in 4th grade I experienced bullying inside my classroom through my classmates. These boys would swear to and about me. I felt such sadness when these boys would bully me. This went on for about 2 months. Finally I told my teacher, Mr. Kohn about this incident and what was happening, he talked with the boys. Violence can cause sadness, and bad thoughts in a person’s brain. Violence is caused in young people’s lives when youth bully other youth, conflict begins between family or friends, and jealousy between friends or even family.
Unfortunately, bullying and cyber bullying have become crises in society today. In the book, 8 Keys to end bullying: Strategies for parents & schools, by Signe Whitson, parents and educators are given direction and empowerment to help children overcome the bullying crisis (2014). Whitson combined up to date research along with practical skills to present a manual on the 8 steps to help children and their loved one when in bullying crisis. (2014).
