There has been a series of bullying related suicides across the globe in the US that is drawing attention to the connection between bullying and suicide. Research indicates that 15 to 20 percent of all students are victimized by bullies at some point in their school careers (Education Digest). There are several steps we can take as a community to protect our children from bullies. For example, it should become a mandatory requirement for schools to carry out a bullying awareness program, they should also be required to teach anti bullying courses as well as working together as a community to give a safe environment for our children.
Most importantly, implementing a bullying awareness program will be beneficial because it will

There are a number of warning signs that may show that someone is affected by bullying; either they 're being bullied or bullying others. Some of the signs listed as follows: unexplainable injuries, frequent headaches or stomach aches, feeling sick or faking illness, as well as a self destructive behavior such as causing harm to themselves or talking about suicide. Bullying is one of the biggest issues that we have to deal with daily.
Finally, it is very important for everyone to work together to set up a safe environment for our children by sending out a unified message against bullying. Teachers and school officials are at the core of any bullying prevention program. They can create a code of conduct, a mission statement, school wide rules as well as a bully reporting system. Doing this will show an environment in which bullying is not acceptable. The teachers and the school officials are unable to do this alone; engaging the parents and youth will help the students feel safer when they are in a classroom setting.
In addition, the school climate will improve because the students will engaged in taking action to stop bullying, and parents can support the schools’ message about bullying in the comfort of their own home. They are also more likely to recognize the signs of child being bullied. Students are prone to being bullied if they are withdrawn from their classmates, stand out in some way,
Teacher and parent awareness is one of main obstacles in preventing bullying prevention. Teachers and parents do not take bullying as being serious and underestimate the effects it has on children (Cohen, 2008). It is reported that 85% of teachers think they intervene to stop bullying, however only 35% of students feel that teachers do (Cohen, 2008). Many parents and teachers do not have the proper knowledge on what establishes bullying. They see bullying as only being violence and ignore the verbal assaults that are occurring (Cohen, 2008). They do not know the signs to look for and have not been properly trained on how to resolve the issue (Cohen, 2008).
Despite the anti-bullying campaign that’s been established in every school across America, bullying still happens. For a lot of students, school is an unsafe, uncomfortable environment. Bullying happens in many different forms and sometimes it’s hard to recognize.
The best way to address bullying is to stop it before it starts. There are a number of things school staff can do to make schools safer and prevent bullying. First off, one must assess bullying within their school. In order to do this one should conduct assessments in their school to determine how often bullying occurs, where it occurs, and how students and adults may intervene. Later, one must assess their school to see if their prevention efforts are indeed working, or it they must look at the problem from a different perspective. Essentially, one must change the program around until they find a solution that works for their problem, as each school is different.
“Bullying can threaten students’ physical and emotional safety at school and can negatively impact their ability to learn. The best way to address bullying is to stop it before it starts”( Prevention at school). My critical literacy book is about bullying at school. Bullying happens at all age levels and can happen anywhere. For educators the least we can do is make school a safe bully free zone for the students.
Bullying may result in death, physical injury, social and emotional distress. Bullied students are more likely to experience anxiety, depression, poor school adjustment, and sleep difficulty.
Bullying is a major problem and needs to stop because it affects a person in so many ways. Suicide is the biggest affect due to bullying, but there is many other ways it affects someone. When a person is bullied they start becoming depressed, angry, antisocial, and
To foster attitudes against bullying, in addition to promoting knowledge and awareness of bullying, teachers need to take reports of any bullying incident seriously and intervene consistently according to school rules instead of ignoring or minimizing bullying
In the past ten years there has been an increased stress on schools to recognize bullying an issue. Some schools are implementing anti-bullying programs and schools are hoping the programs will be effective. Schools, teachers, staff, students and parents need to realize that bullying is not going to go away over night, but each program students learn will help them become more accepting and empathetic. Anti-bullying programs are effective in schools and give students lessons they will reference to their whole lives.
The information was then evaluated by experts, reliability and validity were both determined. From the results, it was determined that students want to see teachers take an active role in eliminating bullying behavior from the classrooms and the students feel that it is more helpful if teachers teach kids strategies on how to stop bullies from targeting them as well as, communication involving both parents of the bullies and victims (Crothers et al, 2006). Rigby's (2008) study found, in a later study, several ways to empower children in how to deal with bullies when the bully targets them. In a similar study, more recently, Espelage, Polin and Low (2014) had found that teachers' are more likely to intervene in a bullying situation when the student reported the bullying incidence to them (Espelage, Polin, & Low, 2014). In other words, students want to see teachers proactive in dealing with bullying, students also want to be empowered through training to deal with the bully, and they strongly find it helpful that some form of contact is made to the parents of the bully and their own
Bullying is an issue that parents should be aware of or make themselves aware of. Being bullied is very serious as it leads to depression and suicidal thoughts or suicide. (O’ Moore 206). All parents today should know the warning signs if their child is being bullied or if their child is the one bullying other children. Children should feel safe and comfortable in coming to their parent and letting them know that they are being bullied and parents should know how to help their child or where to go to get them help to prevent the bullying. If more parents took the time today to become informed of the seriousness of the issue of bullying and became educated on how to prevent it than children may actually have a better chance at a normal life. Parents should be more proactive in preventing bullying in children by educating themselves and knowing the warning signs of bullying to end bullying once and for all.
Cunningham and Whitten (2007) discussed the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program, a whole-school prevention program widely implemented and researched. Encompassing the whole school, the program contains school-wide, classroom, and individualized components. The program’s objectives include increasing awareness and problem assessment, environmental/ school climate strategies, classroom-focused strategies, and individual interventions. Extensive research indicates positive results in decreasing bullying and victimization. The authors also mention the importance of program monitoring and assessment to ensure thorough and comprehensive implementation. Comprehensive approaches, like the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program, are foundational to ensuring the protection and safety of students to facilitate academic, social, and career development.
Despite its recent resurgence into the spotlight, bullying is still a problem in schools across the country. While most states have adopted or enacted anti-bullying policies and laws, bullying incidents occur far too frequently to believe that the problem is under control. Although there may never be a single strategy or program to end all bullying in schools, there are promising approaches that warrant our attention. Anti-Bullying initiatives, such as P.R.E.S.S. and RIPP, which promote school unity, classroom safety and community involvement, are proving to be more successful than the current practices used in schools today. Furthermore, the implementation of these initiatives in every school could possibly be the antidote to the bullying
If schools neglect integrating bullying programs in their schools, studies show that kids will be more vulnerable to aggressor that comes along, even when they reach adulthood. Stopping bullying in while people are children will have a significant impact on their confidence while growing up. This is why schools should have bullying prevention programs at the top of their funds list. Schools can no longer regress to ignoring bullying, because bullying is often linked to
Again, the basic message should be that bullying is not tolerated in the school and that it must stop.” Once bullying is not tolerated in a school, the school atmosphere would change upon all the students because they know that there is not acceptable to bully their peers and would know the consequences. For parents we would see their involvement in this matter because once the bully or the victim has been identified then the school faculty or teacher will notify the parent and have a meeting about resolving the bullying issue. Olweus (1997) talked about developing clear rules against bullying and he said “These include rules such as "We shall not bully other students"; "We shall try to help students who are bullied"; "We shall make it a point to include students who become easily left
Many people do not realize how serious bullying has become. If you look at statistics suicides due to bullying have increased over just a few short years. This has become a very big problem for not only the victim but the bully as well as it affect both of them. School bullying is mentally destructive to not only the victims, but bullies because of the harmful words, harassment, and physical violence involved as well as the consequences for the bully.
