Bullying in Schools Bullying is the act of using superior strength to intimidate someone, typically to force him or her to do what one wants. Bullying is in every school at every age level for variety of different reasons. A bully can be in many different forms and can be angry and looking for revenge for many different reasons, but two specific groups of people could work together to put an end to this abusive, hostile, and cruel thing that is bullying. These two different groups are the parents and the school officials. Parents and school officials should work hand-in-hand to deal with the problem of bullying in schools.

First, school officials are the people that are directly on the scene and the easiest to get to. Teachers have taught these students and know how they act; therefore, they are able to tell which students play each role out of the “circle of bullying”. According to the British Educational Research Journal, “Teachers have an important responsibility to ameliorate school bullying given its numerous negative correlates and consequences. In order to guide their prevention and intervention efforts, staff training has been incorporated into whole school anti-bullying interventions in Australia, England and around the world.” This shows that school officials receive professional training to learn how to effectively put an end to the person that is bullying. Knowing how to help the victim as a teacher and school official is the most important part. The teacher should learn his or her students in the class and know how to reach out to every student and strive to make each individual feel comfortable. Each student should understand that if they need someone to talk to they can come to any of the faculty members at the school and talk to the teachers about what has been said to him or her and if there was any physical interaction that needs to be brought to attention.

A large stance has already changed many people’s lives—bullying. Children bully for many reasons including sexual orientation, weight, religious/philosophical beliefs, and some reasons unknown to all. Children bullied for their weight often times feel insecure and worthless about their bodies—scaring them in the process of always wanting to be in the same physical state and leading more obese children to lead obese adult lives.

Bullying, as defined by “Description of the Bullying Prevention Program”, is a form of overt and aggressive behavior that is intentional, hurtful, and persistent. (“Description”) Bullied students are teased, harassed, and assaulted either verbally or physically. This bullying may be by one or more peers, and usually happens to those students that are often socially rejected by their peers.
Bullying has become a worldwide issue that has evolved over the years. Some people may argue that bullying has decreased as more people are aware and educated about the effects of bullying. Although people are more educated about bullying, it has only increased over the years. Today, every seven seconds someone is being bullied. Every seven seconds a life is ruined. It is horrendous. Bullying rates have gone through the roof over the years and only makes life for teenagers harder now. 1 in 10 people drop out of school because repeated bullying. 1 in 10 lives ruined. 1 in 10 further education opportunities destroyed. Our current society is doing appalling when it comes to bullying.

Bullying is prevalent across the nation. It has devastating effects on students each day. Bullying is a problem for all students, regardless of race, gender or class. The National Education Association reports that 160,000 children are absent intentionally from school each day because they fear being bullied whether it is an attack or just intimidation by other students. The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines the verb “bully” as “to treat abusively” (Merriam-Webster). There is more than one way to abuse someone. So a complete definition, that comes from www.bullyingstatistics.org, is any type of verbal, social, physical, and cyberbullying abuse that occurs (Naas). Bullying is seen everywhere. It is talked about in movies, media, songs, and inside school programs. What makes the bullies, or aggressors, do what they want? How does the bullying effect everyone?

At a first glance, we might think that it is an older kid beating/teasing a younger classmate however; bullying consists of much more than this. With this in mind, teachers must now research and understand what bullying is, and develop methods to help fight against bullying. Bullying is the aggressive, unwanted behavior that occurs between kids of all ages. Children that bully are using the power they believe they have over other kids to try to control and harm them. Bullying can happen via verbal, social, or physical abuses, such as name-calling, threats, spreading rumors, isolation, embarrassment, spitting, hitting, destroying personal things, etc. In order to be considered bullying, these bad behaviors are repeated over time.

Many people do not realize how serious bullying has become. If you look at statistics suicides due to bullying have increased over just a few short years. This has become a very big problem for not only the victim but the bully as well as it affect both of them. School bullying is mentally destructive to not only the victims, but bullies because of the harmful words, harassment, and physical violence involved as well as the consequences for the bully.

School bullying and bullying as a whole has become a growing concern. The need for more intervention is more recognized, as incidents of bullying and inappropriate acts towards others occur in places outside of the classroom. This literature takes a closer look at bullying in schools. Olwesus (2013) states “the field of bullying research is to some extent plagued by problems, disagreements, and unresolved issues” (p.752). Whether if anyone will agree on the root of bullying, the fact remains that bullying has to be examined at its very core to remedy the matter before it becomes a bigger concern. There is a dire need for intervention based programs to be set in place to address the fact the act of bullying has lasting effects on the bully and the victim. When intervention programs are put into place to address bullying, the act of bullying decreases due to the gained understanding of the effects.
It is only in the recent years that attention has turned toward the widespread problem of bullying, especially in schools, and that bullying is identified as a serious problem that merits intervention and research (Coy). Therefore, relatively little effort has been made to overcome or address the problem, which still remains a widespread social vice.
