Through this study we can understand why we must address workplace bullies and develop action steps to improve working conditions. In this age of global growth, diversity and inclusion, this is an important topic to know about and understand the impacts that not addressing the issues will have within the organization.
Significance to Writer Workplace bullying is of significance to the writer because of personal experience. Having previously experienced workplace bullying, it is important for the writer to have clarity of those experiences and understand the impacts. Bullying behaviors impact teams, departments, and as a result affect agencies and corporations as a whole. How do co-workers respond to the bullying of their teammates? Leadership plays a critical role in the health of organizations. If leaders are engaging in bullying behaviors, how does that affect the workplace? What policies could be revised or implemented to make the workplace less hostile for workers? This study also has significance to stakeholders as it examines the impact on physical and mental health of employees and co-workers. How are teams affected by workplace bullying? Consequences of being a target of a workplace bully affect not only the individual but also the teams on which the target is working. Additionally, if engagement or morale is low because of bullying, this causes further problems in accomplishment of the mission. Customers, as stakeholders, are impacted by workplace bullying. Turnover, low engagement, and low morale can impact the services they receive or the quality of the products that they are purchasing. As word of poor service or quality spreads, an organization will be less likely to attract new customers in addition to the struggle to retain the old ones. In publicly traded corporations, investors as stakeholders must be concerned about this issue due to the impacts on service, hiring costs, and profits. Lower profits will lessen the return on their investment. In government agencies, taxpayers are stakeholders. The costs of workplace bullying can result in wasted taxpayer money for recruiting costs, legal fights, and the negative press that is received when high turnover or other issues come into the public light.
