With the increase in technology in schools and at home, teacher need to be more aware and have more knowledge on cyber safety. Cyber safety includes many elements including; bullying, online predatory action and identity theft. With the rise of technology online bullying is becoming an ever-growing problem. This is because it not only allows for a student to be bullied at school, but can also be taken home as well. Online bullying can have many negative effects including; depression, anxiety and fear. Teachers need to be prepared on how to effectively deal with this. Some strategies for teachers to put in place may include; sharing real life examples of people who have been affected by cyber bullying, knowing how students can use the …show more content…
There are a few programs that have already been implemented into many schools across Victoria. eSmart is a program that was developed by the Alannah and Madeline Foundation it is a program that schools once signed up are supported to; create their own plans, policies and procedures, access the latest resources, tools and information and record, track and report on their progress in achieving eSmart status. This allows schools to take a holistic approach to cyber safety as is allows you to monitor students’ online activity.
Cyber safety needs to be promoted not only at schools but at home as well. There are many programs and information sites that parents can use to promote cybersafety. Life educational studies show that 41% of teenagers spend more than two hours a day on a mobile device. They have created bCyberwise with the support of Intel Security. It is an interactive cyber safety program targeted to 8 to 13 year old’s. This provides opportunity for students to learn about cyber safety through games and activities through applications on smart technologies. The app teachers young people a number of cyber safety skills which include; How to be responsible and respectful when using online technology, the importance of keeping personal information safe and not telling other people private passwords or arranging to meet with
As the Internet developed, it brings a lot of benefits, such as getting information much quicker; however, it also brings problem. One problem that Internet brings to today’s society is children’s safety on virtual world; there are a lot of temptations attract kids on the Internet. This issue Coben discusses is a particularly controversial one because it’s hard for parents ignore the dangerous on the Internet; on the other hand, if parents surveillance kids’ privacy world, it’s really embarrassed for children. How could we solve this problem? What is a compromise way for both parents and children? Coben thinks parents should use spyware on the computer, but not surreptitious doing this; parents should tell
The internet has created an entirely new world of social communications particularly for youths. There are no more barriers. Family, friends, young and old may now stay in touch with just about everyone, anywhere in the world through the use of email, text messaging, web chat, and instant messaging. Although, most interactions are friendly and in good nature, there are some that are not. The use of technology as a tool to antagonize, torment and intimidate others is now a widespread problem. Sadly, this form of bullying like all others is most common among children and young adults. Research done by Cox Communications on children between 13 thru 18 year-olds, 25 percent said they were cyber-bullied whether online or by cell phone (Cox Com. 2009). Also in 2007, the National Crime Prevention Council reported cyber-bullying as a problem that affected approximately half of all American teens. Since it is popular among this group of American teens, then it is safe look at some of possible reason cyber bullies of this age group are encouraged to take part in such activity.
Communication technologies have become a huge part of children and young people’s lives. Providing many opportunities such as learning, entertainment and socialising. However, they also cause need for concern, as risks in the offline work have shown to be apparent in the online world (Byron, 2008). Hence, it is important that all who work and care for children and young people understand the risks. Then, they can help them get the most out of the opportunities to be had whilst using communication technologies. This essay will discuss an e safety policy that is currently being used in a secondary school. First by summarising the main aims and purpose of the policy, and who is responsible for implementing it. Then it will discuss a national concern
The most important reason parents should monitor their kids software is because children can be cyber bullied . Coben also talked about the girl who was cyber bullied to the point where she committed suicide. Is my child being cyber bullied? As a parent this is a question you should ask yourself. Many parents realize there's something wrong with their child when it's too late. Maybe monitoring and checking up on your child can help prevent these dangers.
Papa (2011), indicated to combat these issues administrators must consider protective measures for both internet and technology use (p.198). Protocols for teaching students how to use the internet appropriately must be put in place (Papa, 2011, p. 198). Antivirus and protection software must also purchased to “prevent extensive damage to existing computer systems” (Papa, 2011, p.198). Regrettably, despite our best efforts to maintain network security we must still face the possibility of people or physical threats such as:
Is the threat of bullying a real threat to kids today? Bullying has been a threat for a long time in schools and adding the new advances in technology such as cell phones, twitter and facebook bullying is now being done online and school learning is being affected. Schools should have the power to limit students’ online speech because the percent of boys and girls being cyberbullied is raising, teachers teaching ability is being affected, and students learning in class is being affected. One reason schools should have the power to limit their students online speech is cyberbullying is now a problem in the United States. The Cyberbullying Research Center posted statistics in February 2010 saying 16.6% of males between the ages of 10-18 have been cyberbullied and 25.1% of females ages between 10-18 have also been cyberbullied (Doc A).
Document A shows that nearly twenty percent of students are cyberbullies, and more than twenty percent of students have been cyberbullied. According to Document B, cyberbullying affects one in ten teachers personally. Cyberbullying affects the privacy, confidence, productivity of teachers and students alike. It is as large a problem as actual bullying, and the quick spreading of everything posted online amplifies the effects of cyberbullying. Schools everywhere concentrate so much of their effort to combat on-campus bullying, they have no excuse to overlook cyberbullying, which affects as many people, and as at least as dangerous as actual
1. This article was written based on a study of cyber bullying behaviors in a large group of middle and high school students. Increases in technology, and access to that technology have increased student ability to bully using an online forum. Not a lot of research had been done into this subject at the time of this article. Taking this into consideration there had been a few large scale studies done that corroborated the belief that cyber bullying is a significant problem. Researchers believed that due to the potential for exposure to this type of bullying, more studies needed to be done. With increased research there was the hope of diminishing the number of incidents of cyber bullying and the effects of those incidents. The research that had been completed also pointed to additional issues, including behavior problems, suspensions, substance abuse and depression among students who had experienced cyber bullying. The other side of previous research showed that the students who used cyber bullying as a weapon were more aggressive in their behaviors.
With the internet and mobile phones being an everyday feature in most peoples lives this has opened the door to a new type of bulling known as cyber bullying. Children who have been bullied at school could at one time come home and get away from their tormentors but now with such technologies available there is the all too unfortunate reality of their problems coming home with them in the form of texts, emails and abuse through other websites.
ICT curriculum in schools helps children gain computing skills it also helps children to understand potential risks of using various devices and being on-line. Cyber-bullying is very common threat affecting children in recent years. Arranging Displays, posters, discussions and sharing information about how to use devices safely and protect themselves can reduce possible digital risks.
In this article the author argues that some parents are not fit to teach their children about cyber bullying. The author writes about an incident where there was a complaint on what books should be handed out to the youth. Even though the author says the parents should be responsible for teaching their children about cyber bullying, the author also gives ways to advise teachers to speak out to their students. This information would be helpful to my essay because it shows the lack of interest some parents take in informing their children about this issue.
Internet security and safety is important more so today than ever before. With the use of new technology in the classroom it is important for
Cyber bullying is a new phenomenon that even the most tech savvy wasn’t prepared for. It allows the aggressor to pick on their victim at all hours of the day. It’s not limited to the classroom anymore; it allows the bully to enter the victim’s safe zone: home. Emails, instant messaging, photo transmitting, and social media outlets are the fuel that feeds this behavior. In traditional bullying, at the end of the day you can escape the torment, but with cyber bullying, there is no escape.
However, bullying has been around for many decades, and now that technology is becoming more advanced, it is faster to communicate with people. Having technology at their fingertips is becoming an international problem (Herrera,2015). In Texas, there was a survey done on cyber bullying in a middle school. Before the data was collected, the school district handed out a survey to see how much information the students know about cyber bullying. Then after collecting all the surveys, they administered a video about internet safety. Six weeks after watching the video they were given another survey about what they learned, there was two significant areas that were lit up. One area that was lit up was, how to positively report cyber bullying, and the other one was their perceptions of cyber bullying (Herrera,2015). Knowing the
The Internet plays a key role in the development of education. According to past research findings, 72% of adolescents surveyed reported using the Internet for school objectives and nearly all of them go online daily (Norris, 2007). Additionally, many interviewed teenagers and parents reported that Internet use is vital to complete school projects. Adolescents need to be educated on how to maximize the legitimacy and safety of online information. Adolescents awareness of the potential impact from internet use and exposure is a
