Hospitals have human lives in their hands and the greater responsibility to function with precision by delivering high-quality services twenty- four hours a day, seven days a week. Institutions such as hospitals, adopt organizational structures with the goal of facilitating communication, increasing job satisfaction, and improving patient care. This summer semester, I am completing my critical care and leadership preceptorship in the Burn ICU at New York Presbyterian Weill Cornell Medical Center. During my shifts, I experienced and researched how NYP Weill Cornell functions in the caregiver- patient, unit-based, and facility-wide manner by using the “Infonet” and gathering information from the unit manager, nurses and nurse’s aides. According to Marquis and Huston (2014), matrix structures merge product and function in a particular fashion. The manager of a unit that follows a matrix structure reports to a service line manager in addition to reporting to a functional manager. As depicted in figure 1, the top of the chart is led by the President of the Hospital, Robert Kelly. Underneath him are the Senior Vice President and Chief Nursing Officer Wilhemina Manzano and the Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, Cam Patterson. As Senior VP and CNO, Ms. Manzano’s responsibility is to promote nursing leadership and guarantee the integration and implementation of initiatives that promote excellence and innovation in nursing throughout the New York Presbyterian hospital system. In addition, Ms. Manzano is also responsible for research, quality, and nursing education. She works in conjunction with NYP’s leaders to improve service delivery outcomes and patient care (NYU, 2015). As Senior VP and COO, Mr. Patterson is responsible for the management and strategic direction of NYP Weill Cornell medical Center. This paper aims to address and discuss about the leadership and management of the nurse leader interviewed. This experience was a great opportunity to witness first hand how a nurse leader cultivate and manage their staffs in real life setting. Moreover, it provides a great access to gain insight and knowledge about nurse leaders’ vital responsibilities and role diversities in the organizations they work with. Nurse leaders pay more specific and close attention in handling the staffs and most importantly, patient care.
Leaders are the ones we turn to when life gets to be too much. Good leaders set examples and provide guidance through education (Huber, 2014). As a new nurse I can understand how important it is to have a leader you turn to when you are unsure. Furthermore, in the business of health care we are managing people 's lives and one wrong move can be deadly. Therefore, it is important to collaborate with other health care professionals to ensure a safe competent method of delivery. Ideally, the role of a leader in health care is one that is knowledgable, firm, and confident, with the ability to deviate from the plan to assist with an emergency. Consequently, the purpose of this paper is to reveal three key behaviors successful leaders exhibit, assess my personal leadership style, referencing theories, while determining an optimal work environment based upon the aforementioned.
The hospital’s formal matrix organizational structure consists of a bureaucratic hierarchy of authority (Appendix A). Dunham-Taylor and Pincszuk (2010) proposes that matrix structures promote originality and inventions; yet, they are problematic to manage due to the confusion in management levels. Moreover, this type of structure requires proficient management skills and communication to foster functionality within the organization. The hospital’s bureaucratic structure delineates a clear chain of command which provide rules and regulations, specialization of work, division of labor, and impersonality of relationships (Marquis & Huston,
Leadership is one of the most important aspects of running organizations as it contributes the overall strength, wellbeing, and success of an organization. Without leadership and management, assurance of standards and regulations of care would falter. Lack of an authority presence could lead to some nurses or other healthcare team members providing inconsistent care, as well as a lack of organization and direction within the units of the hospital. In the hospital, nurse leaders and managers play a vital role as they help successfully run units, guide nurses in successful practice, empower others to strive to reach goals, while also maintaining strict standards and acting accordingly by serving out appropriate repercussions and consequences
Nursing managers work to ensure that high quality care is being provided to the patients at their health care facility, accommodate nursing and education programs, and provide effective problem solving skills to apply to their work environment when required (“How”, 2015). Individuals who take on this role are expected to have at least all the certifications a registered nurse requires; Registered Nurse Licensure and CPR certification. A Master’s of Science in Nursing is preferred for the position, but there are facilities that will accept a registered nurse with their bachelor’s degree into a nursing manger position if they’ve had three to five years of experience in a team leader role previously (“How”, 2015). When looking for a candidate for this position it is pertinent that the individual has had an abundant amount of experience working on the floor, so that they will have the capabilities to apply their knowledge they’ve learned from previous practice to any problems that could potentially arise on the floor. Nursing managers ensure that hired employees are competent for their position, evaluate their employees’ performances, supervise nurses, certified nursing assistants, or licensed practical nurse, implement punitive actions when needed, and are knowledgeable of hospital wide policy changes (“How”, 2015). The manager’s position focuses on staffing, problem
The nursing leadership model is traditional with the exceptions of the (CNO) who also act as the chief operating officer (COO). There are NVP that are assigned to each service line, as well as a nurse director level. Nurse managers are assigned at the patient unit level, and there is also a clinical nurse leader on each patient unit. Since St. Vincent’s is part of a larger organization there are both local and corporate nursing priority’s and initiatives. Combine this will the rapid changes in health care the ability to lead change and effectively communicate are of the utmost importance.
Grippingly, the medical unit met the majority of the criteria of a highly functioning organization. Yet, areas for improvement still exist. On the Organizational Assessment, the answer to question #24, Is there evidence that all nursing personnel know the organizational structure and understand their assignments and those of their
This paper address the lack of communication between interdicinplnary staff and the patients they care for also the significance of the care giver when patient enter an ICU setting. There are several problems that can occur to patient in an ICU setting when communication between collaborative care is broken down. The biggest issue can be death when this happens or even patient injuries which are two of the biggest concerns when it comes to care of patients. “Notably, when asked to evaluate interprofessional collaboration, nurses consistently rate is lower than doctors, suggesting discipline-specific perspectives on the nature of collaboration (Baggs, Miller, Sexton,2002).” Showing that nurses and physicians are where the problems seems to lye

Healthcare changes occurring today along with shrinking budgets and reimbursement rates for hospitals has forced institution CEOs to do more with less. Changes and restructuring of various health facilities require nursing leaders with flexibility and adaptability. Nurse leaders must also consider budgetary constraints, cost effectiveness, patient safety, and quality care while maintaining focus on improved patient outcome. The responsibility of ensuring patients receive safe and high quality care belongs to every employee in the hospital, including support staff such as IV therapy. In this hospital, this led to the development of a nurse director position to oversee the
In the hospital, a team includes a CEO, managers, supervisors, charge nurses, medical doctors, nurses, nursing assistants, social workers and maintenance crews; it can also include many other members. In addition, a well-functioning team is led by a good leader; a leader does not necessary mean the CEO, but someone who is driven, knowledgeable, and a good communicator. Charge nurse and nurses are normally the one that handles the care of patients in the hospital. Both charge nurses and nurses can be considered leaders. It is why, it is very crucial that nurses are good communicators. One would say that nurses are the spoke person of a hospital to its patients. The nurses care for their patient closely, they communicate with the doctors regarding the care of the patient; they communicate with the pharmacies, nursing assistant, colleagues, and many more. Those
The nurse supervisor needs to promote these practices in the functioning of the clinic every day. Weekly staff meetings are a place where everyone can come together and discuss what did and did not work well in the clinic for that particular week. This is one way to increase communication between staff members. Fostering open communication and providing an environment where everyone’s voice can be heard is very important during these meetings and could be considered one of the major responsibilities of the nurse supervisor. When employees can begin to appreciate the benefits of an interdisciplinary approach and can recognize the potential of such an approach for improving patient outcomes then it will be natural that they would want to continue using this approach. A nurse supervisor must be present to answer staff questions and to help guide them in this process while taking advantage of opportunities to help staff recognize that the interdisciplinary approach is improving patient care. When the nurse supervisor approaches Ms. W regarding delegation and team work, it is important that she utilizes the concepts mentioned above. The nurse supervisor can begin the conversation by recognizing and affirming the difficulties that Ms. W must be having with trying to provide healthcare for Ms. R, who
