Bus service is the most common vision that comes to mind when one thinks about Urban Public transportation. The Bloomington- Normal area uses Connect Transit, which has multiple buses and routes throughout the area. Although the Connect Transit system is very helpful for most students, allowing us to go to the mall with friends, visit target for food and ‘needed’ items, or visiting the downtown, it can also prove to be extremely difficult and stressful for people who would have to rely everyday on it. After riding the bus for more than an hour, making two transfers along the way and visiting multiple neighborhoods, I came to realize why a stigma regarding public transportation exists. “Public transit situates is so that we are given license to accept what’s right in front of us, but will likely arouse our desire to compare our narrative to someone else’s, to give ourselves permission to speculate upon a person’s private space, or life, with no fear of recourse or punishment” (Wilson, 2012). In order to view the barriers that low- income people face on a daily basis when it comes to riding the bus, I rode the available public transportation, allowing for detailed observation.
I arrived at the Normal Uptown Station at 4:50, prepared to take the Orange H bus through Normal, to Eastland mall.
