If a company wants to expand their business to a different country, is the business practices and culture the same? According to the Encyclopedia of management, “The standards, expectations, and benchmarks of business behavior vary across countries” (Hill. p. 491). There are numerous countries in the world with their own culture, which correlates with their business methods. With that said, it is vital for companies to understand that not every country is the same, in terms of business and culture. The culture and business structure, for example in The United States (U.S), is different in Spain. Spain’s business practices and culture has differences in these three categories: contextual, social, non-verbal.
Spain is a high context culture. Business people in this country prefer face to face versus written communication. The Spanish look at nonverbal communication like facial expressions and eye contact. In addition, Spaniards analyze the true intentions of a company; does the company care or is it just a financial gain for them? People with a business proposal must schedule a time to meet Spaniards. Spaniards appreciate those with great personalities and make the effort to meet them. With that said, Spaniards expect businesspeople to build personal relationships with them.
