In 1968s, a voluntary rating system was set up for keeping the youngster from seeing undesired or unsuitable film. This system is called the MPAA (the Motion Picture Association of America). Based on “This Film is Not Yet Rated” (2006), inside of the MPAA, there is an anonymous group of parents gather to rate films. They give out the final rating result out like: G, PG-13, NC-17, R, and PG. Basically, G means all ages admitted; PG, there are some material may not be suitable for children, parental guidance suggested; PG-13, Some material may be inappropriate for children under 13; R, under 17 requires accompanying parent or adult guardian; NC-17, nobody 17 or under should be admitted. Filmmaker must submit their films to the MPAA, then, MPAA …show more content…
This group cannot representative our whole American society. Jamie Babbit, a lesbian, has daughter. She is the director of “But I’ am a Cheerleader”. Her movie is about gay kids who go to homosexuality campus and the stories happened among them. It gets a NC-17. The MPAA told her if she wants to get an R instead of NC-17, she has to cut a scene of a girl who is masturbating. She compared another movie named “American Pie” get released in the studio, it also including a scene about a man using apple pie to masturbate. Apparently, there is no difference between them. Both of them are about masturbation. Even though the audience cannot see any private spot, they can tell the actor is masturbating. The only different thing between these two movies is “But I’m a Cheerleader " which focus on homosexuality. Based on Jane, “many people who call themselves ‘straight’ might actually be closer to the gay end of the continuum” (2010: 30). The exist of homosexuality (gay, lesbian) is common between us, and lesbian and gay is gradually get accepted by the public, and “all same-sex sexuality as queer terrain has also been a useful political strategy for the lesbian and gay movement, and one that has been supported by scholarship on sexuality” (2010: 30). There should be no reason that “But I’m a Cheerleader” gets shut down by the MPAA because of the main background is about homosexuality. People work for the MPAA do not declaim themselves as homosexuality, but it does not mean that there is nobody in society do not in favor of homosexuality. American is a diversified country. It should accept all the different sexuality identities, practices, and
The film industry was like a toddler learning to walk. The community found it necessary to guide that walk according to its beliefs and values. Above all, a concerted effort was made to protect children. That was perhaps the good thing that arose out of the censorship of the early film theaters content. It is easy to understand the logic and the need to monitor content that would have an impact on children
In Harry Benshoff’s article, “Brokering Brokeback Mountain”, he touches on how in the movie Brokeback Mountain, there are many queer references that are made and thus created quite a bit of controversy in Hollywood and also to the moviegoers in the audience. In Benshoff’s article, he attempts to help the reader understand the phenomenon surrounding homosexuality. To complete his study on how the audience in North Texas was receptive of this film, he utilizes his own personal experiences and surveys from the people of North Texas. Benshoff analyzes the opinions of homophobia from the viewers by reviewing their responses to the film and how they generally feel about the reality of the film. Despite the mixed reviews that this film received, it allowed the film industry to “[open] up an important public space for discourse on the place and meaning of queer men in the United States” (2-3).
Throughout the article various tone changes occur. During the introduction, there is a negative attitude that is apparent. The author is reflecting on Erykah Ward’s, a former gymnast, initial reactions to becoming a cheerleader. Ward’s responses were derogatory and stereotypical; she even stated at the end of the introduction, “I’ll want to kill them all” at the idea of becoming a cheerleader. She uses common stereotypes against cheerleaders such as “jumping around” and “uneducated.” All of the sudden, the article’s tone changes to a positive voice. The author is now praising cheerleading and cheerleaders for what they must endure. A couple sentences of ago the author was attacking cheerleading, but now he is saying, “competitive cheerleading is no joke.” This new admiring tone remains throughout the rest of the article and seems to get more passionate the further in detail he goes. Overall, the article has an informal voice. Campo- Flores is using
This sort of rating usually subverts common horror ratings as it is very low but this was requested by the film makers. The film starred Daniel Radcliff an actor who starred in the renowned harry potter series of films all rated at 12A so Radcliff’s fans that are usually younger were attracted to the film which aided in it’s lower rating the film makers wanted to appeal to this so the film was not as graphic as some other horror films but some parents and the BBFC still has some concerns for the children watching it at age of 12 because they found that supernatural being convincing children to kill themselves and murdering people would disturb younger children the children who wouldn’t usually watch horror films were brought by Radcliff another scene were concerns were raised was with the woman in black hanging herself from a noose and the young girl setting herself on fire with an oil lamp so they cut certain scenes darkened certain shots and reduced sound affects to achieve the lower rating which is all unconventional of a horror
Cheerleading is just one of those activities, which cause many controversial upheavals. Whether it is the outfits they are wearing or the moves they are doing, there is always a problem it seems like. I mean just think about how many times you may have seen something you don’t like or agree with cheerleaders doing. Well I guess that’s just the wonderful world of cheerleading. Cheerleading can be a great sport to become involved in, but many things need to be changed, like their skimpy outfits and sexual moves.
From an outsiders perspective one may see brainless and beautiful robots, which scream and perform neat tricks. This is not the case from the inside; cheerleading is so much more than that. Many people are under the impression that cheerleading is not a sport. I am the voice of reasoning that will let you in, and I will show you that cheerleading, in fact, is a sport. Cheerleading requires much physical demand from the body just as any other sport would. Cheerleading, in general, is a team effort. There are many sides to cheerleading, which make it a versatile sport. When it comes to cheerleading there’s more to it than what meets the eye.
Kids In Mind, a ratings analysis service, uses 3 main categories to rate movies. Sex/nudity, violence, and profanity are each graded on a 10 point scale. This helps viewers make an informed decision about the content they will be exposed to. The hypothesis is that R-rated movies will have higher occurrences of content in these categories than the PG-13-rated movies. This sample includes 42 movies, most of which were released in 2011. Half were given a rating of PG-13 and the other half were rated R. Below is the statistical summary from the data that was collected.
Amidst cheerleaders of all ages cheering and screaming, I heard a meek voice to the right of me, asking is I was a senior. When I told the young girl I was, she awed about wanting to have my leadership skills when she got to be my age. In this moment of chaos at the UCA Cheer Camp, I realized how my leadership skills have grown over the years of being a cheerleader. Every summer, I went to this cheer camp, where cheerleaders are trained to be leaders not just in school spirit, but in our everyday lives. I, too, had the expectation that I was a leader, but never really thought what made me a leader, until the shy cheerleader talked to me. Over my time at the camp, I was learning what qualities make an outstanding leader. I thought that the only
Many have seen her. Many know her. But who is the American cheerleader? Is she a blond haired, blue eyed sex symbol? Is she a drug-addicted girl with no brains and even fewer moral values? Maybe she is just your average, pretty, girl-next-door with a loud voice and lots of spirit. What is clearly true is that cheerleading and cheerleaders have evolved greatly over a century-long history. What started as one bold college student has turned into an activity with over 3 million participants (Brady 1); one that is backed by a $150 million industry (Williams 2). Modern cheerleading has come a long way from its historic roots, but large differences still exist between the iconic cheerleader, the stereotypical cheerleader, and the truth.
The MPAA rating system, which was created and is regulated by the Motion Picture Association of America, was set in place to help determine how old you have to be in order to view different movies (MPAA Ratings). This system is supposed to help determine whether a movie is deemed appropriate for different age levels, but most of the age groups are quite broad and how a person views the level of appropriateness can be biased. The current rating system was created in 1968, which replaced the original system called, “The Production Code” (also known as the “PCA” or the Production Code Administration) (Rocchi). Not all systems are perfect, which is why this one was revised and eventually turned into the more recent MPAA rating system.
The first good example of the cheerleader trope is Cheryl Blossom from the television show Riverdale, which began airing in 2017. In episode 1 of season 1, titled “The River’s Edge,” Cheryl is the “Queen Bee” of the cheerleading squad. She is seen as snarky, demanding, and deprecating throughout many of the episodes, particularly to Betty Cooper, another character of the popular TV show. It is mentioned in the episode that Cheryl won’t allow Betty to join the cheerleading squad because she is “too fat” when it is clearly seen that Betty is not overweight and Cheryl was just trying to be hurtful or deter her from joining the squad. In the show, Cheryl's “minions,” Ginger Lopez and Tina Patel, are always seen by her side while following her
I have been a cheerleader at Topsail High School for the past three years of my high school career. My team trains for our competitions and games for ten months out of the year. It has been time consuming, but very rewarding to be apart of the Topsail Cheerleading Program.
A setback I have recently faced was not making the varsity cheerleading team my senior year. I know it may not seem that big of a deal to some, but it was to me. I have been cheering since my 8th grade year, and to not make it my senior year was disappointing. When I realized I didn't make it, I felt many different emotions: confusion, denial, sadness, and anger. I stayed angry for a while, like my senior year was already starting off bad, and this was supposed to be my best year. An even though I knew I had other talents and could go on do so much more, it didn't feel right. I've gotten so accustom to going to practice and cheering at the games and seeing my close friends. It’s a different type of bond you have with other cheerleaders, especially
When you hear the word cheerleader, what do you visualize? A ditzy girl on the sideline of a football game shaking pom-poms seems to be the most common image. Although this is how cheerleading originally began, the sport has been revolutionized: it is incomparable to its’ original purpose. Cheerleading is now a year-round activity which involves stunting, tumbling, and dancing. There are many different types of cheerleading; these are all governed by different rules which are set up within the league. These rules are not required by the government, because cheerleading is only recognized as a sport in a handful of states, which has caused nationwide debate. Many cheerleading coaches are inadequately trained, and athletes are often pushed to attempt skills that are beyond their skill level. The dangerous nature of cheerleading has led to serious injuries among teenagers, often occurring during stunting. Cheerleading should be ruled a sport due to the extreme dangers that cheerleaders are subjected to because of insufficient coaching and the lack of guidelines surrounding the activity.
In order to establish a group that censors televisions and movies, the Motion Picture Producers Association (MPAA) was created. Each rating category has a description of the appropriate age at which to view the film and whether or not a parent’s accompaniment is necessary. The Motion Picture Producers Association assesses a film and gives it a rating of G (general audiences), PG (parental guidance suggested), PG-13 (parents strongly cautioned), R (restricted), or NC-17 (no one under seventeen admitted). As the film industry has been changing over time, so have the ratings. More and more parents are having issues with the ratings that some films are issued. “The man behind the ratings, Jack Valenti, president of the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA), says the system works just fine. ‘Parents use it and trust it, and that's why it's lasted for almost 35 years,’ Valenti says. ‘It warns parents in advance about what's in a particular movie, but ultimately, parents are responsible for the behavior and conduct of their children — not the ratings system’ (Hansen 273).”
