Technology can be too smart for our own good. Nuclear bombs have killed innocent people and technology will too. In the Waters of Babylon by Stephen Vincent Benét there was a nuclear bomb that went off and destroyed everything but some people did survive. In There Will Come Soft Rains by Ray Bradbury there was a nuclear bomb that destroyed everything but a smart house. There Will Come Soft Rains was more disturbing than The Waters of Babylon because of the fact that it is about a house that has a brain type computer chip.
In “By the Waters of Babylon,” by Stephen Vincent Benét, set in a future following the destruction of industrial civilization, the story is narrated by a young man who is the son of a priest. The priests of John’s people,“the hill people,” are inquisitive people associated with the divine. Truth and knowledge are displayed as a role for priests to know and not everyone else; because, of consequences that could happen if someone knows too much. Truth and knowledge are only controlled by priests to keep everyone in the village safe; so, no one knows the truth about the gods or anything else that will let society fall to pieces. Imagine going through life learning and following what is believed to be the true , just to find out that it is a lie. In the story “ By the Waters of Babylon” by Stephen Vincent Benet the narrator, John is on a quest to find more knowledge, however he ends up discovering unexpected truths on his journey that affects his lifelong beliefs. The story leads the reader to an interesting question: what is the relationship between knowledge and truth? Knowledge is the education or information that is gained about a subject, idea, or experience. Gaining knowledge is often helpful and rewarding to a person, however the information or facts that is received is not always the truth.
In the story, “By The Waters Of Babylon,” written by Stephen Vincent Benet, a great change occurred from centuries before John’s society. Even though this change happened long before John’s society came about, it still affected the way his society’s culture was. This story expressed great cultural adjustments throughout time. When the Great Burning happened, everything was destroyed and most knowledge was lost along with the city. This caused everything to change when it came time to rebuild the society. Culture changes over time due to the idea that through everyday that passes, some form of knowledge, somewhere, is lost or gained, and that causes a dramatic change as the years keep going.
Alas, Babylon is a warning to today’s society about what will happen if nuclear warfare ever takes place. This occurrence is closer
What is the most important thing to know about knowledge you are given? The answer is simple, the truth. In the story “By the Waters of Babylon” the main character John is on a quest for knowledge. In his civilization the priests are the wisest and most knowledgeable people. John is the son of a priest and wants to become one himself. John is obsessed with finding more knowledge. John says, “My knowledge made me happy--it was like a fire in my heart” (Benet 312). He dreams of going to on a journey to the The Dead Place, a place that is forbidden for any of his people to go to.
When drastic times occur and sweep one of everything they own, do they have a plan of action? Will they be prepared for a life without power, resources, and stability? Many times when people are faced with this situation they find themselves unprepared and unable to live in such conditions. They lose the connections with the world, the water they drink is likely to get contaminated, and the scarcity of goods is a threat to themselves and anyone left alive. Everywhere around them there is death and destruction leaving them isolated in their own dystopia. Pat Frank’s Alas, Babylon illustrates a nuclear bomb simulation. In such a way, he gives the readers a taste of isolation and survival needs when facing such drastic times.
The story “By The Water Of Babylon”, written by Stephen Vincent Benet, has a plethora of aspects of literary elements that depict the story. The following analyzes the story using the seven elements of fiction.
At first one might think that the “forest people” are the antagonist. This is because they are at war with the neighbour tributes and they are even hunting people down. As John (the main character of the story) is on his journey he is very concerned that he is going to end up running into the “forest people”. He is worried that the “forest people” will take him or harm him in any way. He even refers to the “forest people” as “people that is less advanced, and more unfortunate than members of his own tribe”. However the “forest people” are just another part of “By the Waters of Babylon”. They shouldn’t be the main focus of the story. People should really be focusing on the end of the story more. This is when John realizes that the gods were
The Babylonian Kingdom (about 3500 years BC - in 729 BC) in Mesopotamia, roughly in the territory of the Republic of Iraq today. About 5000 years ago, people here to build the country by eighteenth Century BC, here the ancient kingdom of Babylon. The ancient Babylon, also known as mesopotamia. Written in 1930, Babylon Revisited is a story set in the Great Depression era, however the narrative represents American culture from across several years. F. Scott Fitzgerald, author of Babylon Revisited, succeeds in framing what American culture was in the 1920s as well as the early 1930s. The story exposes the two cultures through the protagonist Charlie Wales, a business man who “got lucky in the market.” In the story, Charlie’s lifestyle is shown as one of luxury and excess which defines the era before the Great Depression known as the “Roaring Twenties”. As Fitzgerald unravels the narrative, he creates a setting more representative of the time the story was written in. The underlying feeling of depression and loneliness contrasts with Charlie’s lifestyle creating an interesting clash of 1920s consumerism and the conservative culture Americans shifted towards as a result of the economic downturn. Babylon Revisited is a strong culturally relevant piece which explores American culture from the “Roaring Twenties” to the Great Depression era of the 1930s.
