There is a man, he is sure of himself, proud, and overall a confident guy. But one day, all of that changes when he meets an outspoken woman who takes his heart. C.S. Lewis was that man and his wife Joy stole his heart. In the movie adaptation of Shadowlands Lewis makes many deep declarations. He had written a book in his past with the same title of as the movie which began to take on more meaning in his life. Looking at the quotes “We live in Shadowlands”, “The sun is always shining elsewhere, where happiness dwells.” and “Experience is a brutal teacher, but you learn. My God, you learn” there is a strong connection to what C.S. Lewis wants his viewers to understand and the titling of this media. To begin with, the definition of shadow is very important to this story. Shadow as a noun means a dark figure or likeness cast upon the ground, but it can also be a …show more content…
Understanding these singular nuances behind the words is very important. When C. S. Lewis wrote that he was living in Shadowlands, it was earlier in his life and he had not experienced the full range of grief that he would soon come to know. So in this instance he is referring to how that land is a safe haven from grief and sorrow. Later in his life, after many sad events have transpired, C.S. finds himself believing that all that is left is a dark figure cast upon the ground. Nothing but pain and sorrow. This abrupt change in his life is slowly mended over time and is tied in directly to his second quote about how there is always happiness somewhere. Joy reminded C.S. Lewis of this sentiment quite often, but it was not until after she had passed that he truly understood it. Joy knew that there were not shadows everywhere when you were sad, she knew that the sadness would be hard, but would eventually pass, just as a shadow does. Such an understanding of grief and pain that could be communicated so easily relates wonderfully to the title. Shadowlands is a
The vision Christopher Nolan had for The Prestige (2006) was to add to the outbreak of street magician film, whilst playing a large dramatic subplot equal in grandeur to the magical performances within the film. In the final sequence of the film, I will analyse how the cinematography and sound resolves the plot so that it summarises the themes present in the film, whilst also invoking a response from the audience. Nolan predominantly uses close up shots, non-diegetic sound (music) and dialogue collaboratively to convey the dramatic, personal subplot of the characters and their relationships, whilst appealing to the audience bringing forth an emotional response from the audience. The heavy, slow, dramatic atmosphere of the ending sequence uses various techniques to summarise and uncover the underlying mysteries of the events throughout the film and consolidate themes introduced during the exposition.
The movie Before Night Falls directed by Julian Schnabel offers viewers a glimpse of how the homosexual community in Cuba was being mistreated under Fidel Castro’s regime. The true story is told in the eyes of Cuban poet Reinaldo Arenas. The film depicts Arenas life in Cuba and all of the awful experiences that he had to deal with as a homosexual. Eventually he was arrested for false accusations of being a molester, however, he was actually under arrest for being a homosexual. Between the 1930s and 1990s, the Communist Cuba was abusive to the LGBT community as shown in their actions of harassment towards homosexuals, imprisoning the homosexuals, or sending them to re-education camps.
Low angle shot, where a camera points upwards from below, generally make people or things look bigger, more courageous and important. However, same angle shots sometimes will be chosen to emphasize different effects in one film. In the movie “Night of the Living Dead,” the director George A. Romero uses low angles for different purposes.
Daniel continuously uses gloomy and depressing tone to make the reader feel as if all light has been sucked from the universe. He thinks “The world has enough degradation, humiliation, and disappointment for everybody to try some” (Daniel). By describing a world in which not a single shred of happiness still exists, a parade begins to seem like a glimmering light at the end of a long tunnel. This world
One early evening right before dusk, they were playing in the forest dressed as magicians with their black gowns and top hats using tree branches for magic wands, and as they waved their wands they saw a very strange shadow. This shadow was also surrounded by very
In the film, Night of the Living Dead, the movie starts with two siblings, John and Barbara, driving to their father's grave to drop off flowers. John is reluctant to be there and is eager to leave while Barbara is trying to pray. John teases her like when they were children saying “They’re coming to get you, Barbara!” when they both see an unknown man. Barbara goes to apologize to the unknown man but it seems he is dazed and kills John. Barbara escapes and finds herself at an empty house. In the house, she meets Ben, who borders up to the windows after taking down 3 undead. After a bit of listening to a radio for the current status of the state of emergency, Harry and Tom come upstairs. We learn that two men, two women, and a child had been in the basement of the house during Barbara’s and Ben’s struggle with the undead. After much argumentation on if the basement or upstairs was safer between Harry and Ben, Harry went back downstairs to his wife and child. Tom and his wife, Judy, stayed upstairs with Ben believing they could properly border up the windows together. After much convincing from Helen, Harry’s wife, Harry and she join the others upstairs. While listening on the radio, they are given more updates of the state of emergency. The radio announcer suggests instead of staying in place, to now go to one of the designated “safe areas”. When places are announced, Tom says that one of the
The Australian cinema in the 1960’s failed to communicate with the audience due to their lack of promotional messages that weren’t disseminated. Media is formed by cultural, political, economic and social conditions. These influenced or even directed its characteristics and its intended meaning. After a devastating blow to the film industry in the 1960’s, filmmakers of Australia had stopped creating and making quality Australian films. However, the Australian New Wave brought a revival of the Australian film industry during the 70's, 80's and 90’s. It introduced Australian qualities into film, including larrikinism, mateship and a classless social hierarchy. The Castle and Gallipoli confirm, promote and explore features of Australian identity
Jefferson Smith is trying to win the fight against the corrupted politicans around him in order to achieve his idealistic opinions and plans.

The book A Grief Observed and the movie Shadowlands are very similar in most aspects because the movie is based on the book. However, there are several aspects in which the movie does not capture the book. One obvious difference between the movie and the book is the fact that the movie only portrays Joy as having one son despite the fact that she had two in real life. However, Douglas was the one who wrote the introduction of the book and therefore has a bigger role because his thought process is included in the book compared to the other son. Further, it seems like the movie portrays their marriage as shorter than it actually is. The movie gives the idea that it bas a brief marriage and that they did not love each other till late in the marriage
C.S. Lewis is one of the greatest authors in history. His books are still widely available and sold to many interested readers. In Lewis’ childhood, he experienced a tragedy that affected his belief in god; in his middle life, he mainly focused on college and his studies, but his father’s death played a role in Lewis later becoming a Christian. In Lewis’ later life, he married one of his own fans. Clive’s passion for writing began when he was a small child, and it continued to grow as he furthered his education to become a college professor at Oxford University. Lewis is still remembered today for his great works, such as The Screwtape Letters and The Chronicles of Narnia, which is a popular series among children.
These shadows in the cave are mere images, the lowest of the epistemological form of knowledge in the divided line. The objects which produce these shadows are the sense particulars. The sense particulars can then be counted e.g. three tree “puppets” this ability to count corresponds to the mathematical objects level of the divided line. Then once the person leaves the cave, he is able to see the actual forms, not just shadows or puppets, he is able to see the real object, and this conforms to the forms. Lastly, the sun is the thing that makes all life possible which is analogous to the ultimate Good which make all of the forms of knowledge even possible.
The movie Awakenings is directed by Penny Marshall in the year 1990. Given the title Awakenings, the movie was about the dream of a doctor named Dr. Malcolm Sayer portrayed by Robin Willliams, whose goal is to cure the survivors of the outbreak of Encephalitis Lethargica and was paralyzed by Parkinson’s disease for decades. Dr. Sayer treated them by a miracle drug: Levo-dopa that was able to revive them again. After these awakenings, the true problems unveil, between the benefits and the counter side effects of the drug and the patients that weren’t able to accept the reality in time they have missed. This is some of the different factors of the movie that contributed to inspire works Dr. Sayer throughout the movie, which is the purpose of this paper.
Moonlight is an American drama film that chronicles the life of African-American male Chiron, who is being raised by a careless mother in a harsh Miami neighbourhood. Its most prominent themes are love, stereotypes and identity. The filmmakers create meaning from these through combining different elements of aesthetics (the style or look of a motion picture). Aesthetic effect refers to the practise of using different elements of a film (mise-en-scene, sound, cinematography and editing) to generate film form.
Then, Williams finds a way to change the depressing mood of his poem by using specific words to convey feelings of hope. He does this in his fourth stanza with the lines: “Lifeless in appearance, sluggish/dazed spring approaches” (L14-15). Williams is saying that the plants, the trees, and the vines only appear to be dead, but they are not. Once again imagery is being used here. Also, what is going to save this otherwise seemingly desolate land is the approaching spring; “sluggish” and “dazed” as it may be, it is imminent – life is forthcoming. Williams also proffers up more hope with the lines: “One by one objects are defined/rooted, they/grip down and begin to awaken” (L22,26-27).
