Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) is a severe acute respiratory illness caused by the coronavirus named MERS-CoV. It is believed that the virus is found in camels and passed on to humans who are in contact or around infected animal. These camels are mainly located in Egypt, Oman, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia (WHO, 2015a). Those infected with MERS exhibit fever, cough, and shortness of breath, pneumonia, and diarrhea. Severe cases require patient to be put on mechanical ventilation or in an intensive care unit. It is also known to cause kidney failure and septic shock. • Patient: 64 year old female, wife of 1st case
• Did not travel abroad with husband
• May 15, 2015: Cared for husband during hospitalization
• May 18, 2015: Developed symptoms
• May 20, 2015: transferred to nationally designated medical center
• May 20, 2015: tested positive for MERS-CoV
• Risk Factors: o Close contact with anyone who is experiencing a fever, cough or shortness of breath and has traveled from the Arabian Peninsula within the past fourteen days should monitor their health beginning with last day of exposure and seek medical attention if they become ill (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2015).
3rd Case: Reported May 24, 2015 (WHO, 2015b)
• Patient: 76 year old male
• May 16, 2015: Shared hospital room with 1st patient
• May 20, 2015: developed symptoms
• May 20, 2015: transferred to nationally designated medical center
• May 20, 2015: tested positive for MERS-CoV
