Founded in 1882, approximately 85 miles south of the state capital, Macon-Bibb County lies in the heart of central Georgia nestled along the banks of the Ocmulgee River. It is the 4th largest municipality in the state, encompassing 255 square miles of gently rolling hills and plains with a population of 155,547, population density of 626 people

From 2007-2011 the overall mortality rate for cardiovascular disease in Macon-Bibb County was 129.3 per 100,000 and was higher than the state rate of 77.4 per 100,000 (Georgia Department of Public Health:
North Central Health District website, 2013). The cancer mortality rate has been on the decline in Georgia (169.6 per 100,000) since 2007 but on the rise in Macon-Bibb County since 2010; the leading cause of cancer related mortality within the community for both men and women was lung cancer with 120.6 per 100,000, which is lower than the state rate of 169 per 100,000

In order to obtain the population’s economic status, the Population Economic Status
Assessment tool was utilized to complete the evaluation. The population of 155,547 had a median household income of $36,327 and showed 29.2% of them living in poverty in 2013
