One of the highest and most important management positions in a healthcare organization is the Chief Nursing Officer (CNO). They are responsible for many different tasks that keep the organization afloat and running. One of their responsibilities is to coordinate and oversee the nursing department and all of its daily operations. In order to do this, they are in charge of ensuring that the daily operations run in the organization comply with all regulations and standards. CNOs also develop and implement new objectives, policies and procedures. Nurse Leader Interview This paper aims to address and discuss about the leadership and management of the nurse leader interviewed. This experience was a great opportunity to witness first hand how a nurse leader cultivate and manage their staffs in real life setting. Moreover, it provides a great access to gain insight and knowledge about nurse leaders’ vital responsibilities and role diversities in the organizations they work with. Nurse leaders pay more specific and close attention in handling the staffs and most importantly, patient care.
One thing is for certain, I listen and encourage the nurses’ inputs and opinions when it comes to changes regarding the department. I empower the nurses to have their voices heard and their actions be seen throughout the company and give credit where credit is due. I also encourage them to be better nurses and utilize their skills to the max, i.e. applying their rehabilitative nursing certification through trainings throughout the company.
Without occupying a formal leadership position there are many strategies the nurse can utilize to exert leadership. These strategies can help the interdisciplinary team without that nurse being in a leadership position. The potential to be a leader exists in everyone. Nursing is no exception. Leaders

What a great start to know the role and responsibilities of a Chief Nurse Officer (CNO), when you get a chance to interview someone, who actually does the job. I was fortunate to seize an interview with Derek L. Curtis, DNP, MA, BSN, RN, the current CNO of Lyndon Baines Johnson (LBJH) Hospital, on October 31, 2016. Curtis has 23-years of professional nursing experience with various leadership positions. He graduated Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 1993 from the Medical College of Georgia, earned a master degree in 2001 from Webster University, and this year, from American Sentinel University with a Doctor of Nursing Practice in Executive Leadership. From this experience, I learned that practicing skills can help you in the field to make less medication error, also, helps to build the confidence. As a nurse, it is our responsibility to provide proper care to the client and making sure that we are not risking the client’s health
Since the hospital is a community based acute care hospital, there are numerous subunits. Under the president of Hospital AB and Health Center, the total organization is divided into seven major units which are controlled by seven senior vice presidents. Each unit under the senior vice president is further subdivided into sub units according to the services being provided. The hospital has a distinct subunit configuration for the nursing departments. Each unit is under either a vice president or a director. The major subunits are perioperative services, nursing practice and education, behavior health services, heart center, out patient women services and perinatal clinic, inpatient women services and pharmacy. Each of these major subunits is further subdivided based on the services being provided. The senior vice president for all these units also oversees the programs for patient safety, patient satisfaction and joint commission accreditation. The departments of imaging services, rehabilitation services, cancer center, breast center and quality management comes under another senior vice president (unknown author, 2005).
Teamwork and communication are very important in providing good quality care, especially in the healthcare field. Maintaining the human needs of the staff members in the merger would entail keeping the employees informed about the organizational changes brought about by the merger. This would mean applying an effective communication strategy that keeps the employees well informed as members of the team. Mainly, during interdepartmental mergers, the nurse leader must build a communication plan throughout the merger process. In this case, the nurse leader clearly communicates details about the merger to every stakeholder affected by the change, including employees, patients, and vendors (Dessler, 2011). Implementing proper channels of communication will facilitate sharing of information between stakeholders, consequently reducing conflict, improves
How many layers of management are there? Based on the information provided in the flow chart, there are four layers of management within the Division of Nursing and Respiratory Care Services at the San Joaquin General Hospital. The top layer of management is the Hospital Director and David Culberson fills this position. Reporting directly to the hospital director is the Director of Nursing Services, Erlinda Bolor. Directly beneath the Director of Nursing Services are two Assistant Director of Nursing, positions that are filled by Kim Tomasi and Jackie Bagatta. Based on the organizational flow chart, the assistant directors of nursing are responsible for overseeing five departments each, in addition to the SAFE Program and House Supervisors. The final layer of management is the Department Managers, of which there appear to be 13. The director of nursing and Assistant Directors both have supervisory duties over two Clinical Nurse Specialists, but the Director of Nursing and Assistant Director Bagatta supervise the Respiratory Manager FTEs, House Supervisors, and three Department Managers under the supervision of the House Supervisors.
A nursing director in a hospital organization is the chief of all nurses employed in the healthcare institution. He or she is appointed by the administrative body or a group of stock holders of the agency in accordance to the criteria stated by the policies of the organization as well as in congruence to the Nursing Law being applied in the state or location. By education and management experience, a registered nurse is given an administrative position wherein he or she can facilitate the implementation of the organization’s mission and vision statement to its personnel.

An organization structure offers details of the formal structure of the authority in the organization. The hospital is selected because I have been able to interact with the facility many times. I have been able to work in this department hence I understand the organization structure and the services offered in the department.
A secondary problem is the nurses’ poor perception of hospital leadership. The nurses view management as incompetent as well as uncongenial. Also, the nurses are undermining hospital’s leadership by trying to manipulate management’s behavior through forming small groups of disgruntled employees. These tactics do not positively affect management, but adversely affect management. As a result, the hospital now has a union presence.
