CVS corporations felt its decision to stop marketing tobacco products made sense and was the right thing to do. The sale of tobacco conflicted with their value proposition, (promise of value to be delivered and acknowledgment on behalf of the customer, reciprocating that value was delivered and experienced) of saving lives and providing people with health care. The company’s purpose; which is committed to helping people obtain better health by concentrating their resources in the most appropriate manner that addresses issues that are the most material to address. Additionally, the enactment of ground-breaking programs such as chronic disease management, pharmacy advisor, and maintenance choice which assist patients in the managing and maintaining their medications. Inside CVS Health, there are many stakeholders that come into play and are effected by the new change. The employees, customers and clients, suppliers and venders, investors, and local communities, are the stakeholders that are involved with and are close to CVS Health. CVS Health believes that staying close and involving their stakeholders to their CSR strategy, will help them be successful. Having employees that help contribute to the purpose that CVS Health stands for, helps the consumers get on a path to better health, and also contributes to the local communities outside of work. I am going to select ‘employees’ as the stakeholder for this analysis.
The company will lose over 2 million dollars in sales from customers who buy cigarettes and other tobacco products. The overall sales were over 123 billion dollars in 2012 (NY Times, 2014). By October 1, 2014, over 7,6000 stores nationwide stopped selling these products. According to president and CEO Larry Merlo, this is the right decision for the company and customers because selling tobacco does not correlate with their purpose. Be removing the products, they will better serve patients, clients and health care providers (CVS Health, 2014).

Both offer walk-in clinic services, photo development, as well as basic grocery options.
The final area that could be improved regarding the company’s attitude toward social responsibility is to offer a larger selection of health-conscience and organic products. Though these products come at a higher margin, the requests made by consumers show a demand for products of this type. By offering a better selection, Company Q demonstrates concern for the health and well-being of the community attracting new business and increasing profitability which by definition is socially responsible.
CVS Health announced in 2014 that it wanted to stop selling all tobacco related products. This will affect every CVS location in the United States of America. The problem that arises in the U.S. is the usage of tobacco products. As a successful pharmacy chain and a lucrative company, CVS health wants to do its best to strengthen the health of American citizens. In order to solve the tobacco problem, the health professionals are taking it upon themselves to make a difference. If the distribution of tobacco products come to a halt at CVS pharmacies, consumers will either stop buying the products all together or looking for the products elsewhere.

Even a good company with the best intentions will eventually come to a crossroad where choosing what is best for one will not have such a great outcome for the other. Their best interests will ultimately conflict, and you will be forced make a choice between the two.
